  • "We named our daughter "Mikaela" (with this spelling) because it can be pronounced easily in English and in Spanish as I am of Hispanic descent and mom is Caucasian. In English it's "Mah-Kay-La" while in Spanish it's pronounced "Mee-Kah-Ella" We opted for the K instead of the C because mom is of Scandinavian ancestry and the letter C not used in that alphabet. When she was first born we used the English pronunciation but after a couple years mom wanted the Spanish pronunciation; "Mee-Kah-Ella". Though that eventually turned into simply "Mee-Kah" Which happens to be a traditional girl's name in Japan. So her karate Sensei has no problem calling her Mika. Though there is Japanese mom who is always startled when the name Mika is called out. In addition, I have found Mika can be a traditional boy's name in Finland. So there's that. There's even a salsa song named("Mee-Kah-Ella"), Micaela by La Sonora Carruseles; YouTube it. It's also important to remember that in US English the phonics rule states when a syllable has 2 vowels together, the first vowel is usually long and the second is silent. Examples: "rain, eat, boat, res/cue". Or as they say when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and the second one does the walking. Diphthongs don't follow this rule; In a diphthong, the vowels blend together to create a single new sound. The diphthongs are: "oi,oy,ou,ow,au,aw, oo" and many others. Lastly, I'm active duty military so I do enjoy telling my daughter about the Archangel Michael; who he was, his role, and his mission. It's a strong name for a strong little girl; that someday will be a strong woman." Dec. 14, 2019: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Mikaella, pronounced as Mi-kuh-ela (no problem on the name's pronunciation here in the Philippines), but is often spelled wrong (like 'Michaela'). I even have an acquaintance of the same name spelled as 'Mechaella,' which is odd. I've gotten used to it, though. I've always loved my name, especially when I discovered its meaning ('who is like God') and that it's the feminine of Michael, the leader of the Archangels of God. My mother didn't name me Mikaella for those reasons, though. And yet her very reason was still associated with God---but that would take a long story, er, an explanation. So anyway, I soooo love the name Mikaella/Michaela/Mikaela/Mechaella/Mechaela or whatever it may spell. Thumbs up for all my fellow MIKAELAs out there! I love the sound of our name, you know. ;)" Oct. 15, 2015: Report as inappropriate

Not sure why people have such a hard time with the spelling and pronunciation. Anywayyy, I love being called Mikaela. It's different and there aren't many other 25 year olds with my name. I always loved not having to go by Mikaela O. in school as all the Lauras, Mikes, and Jessicas did." Apr. 13, 2010: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Mikaela, pronounced Mi-kay-luh? I chose this name for myself because I believe to fit my personality when I had my name legally changed eight years ago. I thought it was a beautiful name. Most people call me Kayla, originally I spelled it Kaela.. Pronounce it as Kayla, but everybody kept getting it wrong so I just switched it to the traditional spelling." Dec. 25, 2021: Report as inappropriate
