"I am LOIS:-) since 1966!
While travelling abroad, I had a luggage crisis and happened to find a suitcase whose brand was named "Lois" It was very cool because it was printed on the outside of the bag!
The misspellings and mispronunciations [Lewis, Louis, Louise]seem to have increased over time- prior to the 2000s most people I encountered could read, pronounce and, spell it without a problem! I have referenced the Superman - Lois Lane to help people get it!
My maternal grandmother and aunt were also named Lois, and over the years, I have stumbled across a couple of ladies (my age) with the name." Aug. 8, 2021:
"I love my name, I am easily remembered. Although I am 60 yrs. old, born in 1060, I only knew one other Lois. I have met a Lois or two, but they were always a lot older than me. I was never bothered by people mis-pronouncing or mis-spelling it. When I did politely correct them, they got their life-long lesson. And....what is so wrong with being affiliated with Superman. Again, I am proud of my Biblical, unique, strong and unforgettable name. We need a lot more Lois?s walking this earth!" Feb. 21, 2021:
"My name is Lois and just like everyone else I hate when my name is mispronounced. I will say Lois over and over, until I say like Lois lane in superman. They will look stupid and laugh, but I'm already irritated. My father name is Louie, so he name my sister Delores and he purposely had me 10 months later so we can be like twins. I have a sister name Louise so all the names I can be called is in my family. I Love my name I do not like to be like anyone else and Lois is unique and beautiful. I haven't met much Lois's but when I do,Long conversations occur and the same problem I had, they had. I love my name and love how seeing it makes me feel." Feb. 14, 2021:
"People spell my name wrong and pronounce my name wrong. I have met people with the same name but some people have never heard my name!" Dec. 8, 2020:
"I like my name. I am who I am, people don't judge me by my name. The name is based on Aloyzia which is European." Nov. 17, 2020:
"Hey my names lois lol :) i personally like my name it's unique and ive only meet one other person with my name im also 14! However ive had lots of people say it wrong in my life but i have lots of great nicknames like loi lolo and even luis as a joke. I think its a great name besides the lois griffen and lois lane jokes my last name is also potter which doesnt help with all the harry potter jokes aswell but i wouldnt trade it for the world!" Nov. 11, 2020:
"A beautiful name and structurally attractive whether typed, printed or written. Mispronounced and misspelled often, but that's only because it's an uncommon beauty. I've always loved my name (born 1958)." May. 30, 2020:
"I was given the name Lois Genoveva (born 03'), and it's definitely a life full of struggles. I will never find it on a coke bottle or keychain and I ALWAYS say my name is Gena at restaurants, but a the end of the day who else can say they were the only person with their name in their ENTIRE school district!" May. 10, 2020:
"Hi!My names Lois and im 14.At school teachers call me louis when they call the register sometimes and i get annoyed. Also my friends will call me lois griffin to annoy me.Yet i still love the name." Mar. 16, 2020:
"My name is Lois. I was born in the yard of 2003, being able to know how many Lois that are in the world makes me relate to other other women and girls named Lois. I lived in Philippines and my mom grab my name from the Bible. And having this name in the modern teenage world. It felt odd, but also make me feel like one in a million since when I started living in Australia. I was really the only Lois in the whole school." Dec. 26, 2016:
"I named my baby Lois in 2013. My husband is a Superman fan, but I also liked the meanings (superior, famous warrior... which I equate to SUPERWOMAN WARRIOR PRINCESS OF AWESOMENESS). Plus, it is in the Bible so that's just bonus points on top for a Christian family. We have had a few silly people say "Louis?" but they just make themselves sound dumb so it doesn't bother me, I just correct them. The Lois Lane correlation doesn't bother us since we're a bunch of nerds anyway." Apr. 16, 2015:
"My Grandmothers side of the family all ha Lo?s as the last name. They were all born in Puerto Rico. I did some research and found the name to be popular in Wales. Seems interesting since that side of the family have very light skin and red hair. Red hair and freckles are not a common Puertorican feature.
Love the name Lois." Feb. 8, 2015:
"My name is Lois and it was given to me by my Mom because my great Aunt asked her to name me it after her. I love my name and I love the fact that its biblical. I do not like that people cant pronounce it. Something I just cant quite understand because its so simple. But once I say " You know...like Lois Lane", then they get it. Duh?? I'm 47 years old, but I don't meet many people ( younger ones) who share my name so its nice to read that there are others out there!! Lois should make a comeback, better than "Apple" or "North".." Dec. 2, 2014:
"I am also a LOIS. ;)- a namesake drink grandmother . I also agree with the first. lo lo lol I enjoy my name as an adult. see the name is strong. shown by past Lois' so fun to see faces of the same name!! I noticed. we are all of the same body type old to young. my point of veiw threw my 29 years. ;) alwYs Lo" Jun. 26, 2014:
"Also a Lois,,, born in 1943. I actually like the name. Moreso as an adult woman than as a child. Yes we get the Lois Lane jokes,,, which are fine by me. Yes to nick names of Lo Lo... or just Lo,, or Loey as a kid, also fine by me. Yes to the Louis, and Lewis confusions,,, no big deal... but on occasion someone would spell Lois as Louse... and that would annoy me... Its a simple but good sold, unsilly name of historical origin and that makes it fun. Also belong to the Lois Club,,, and that makes it special too." Apr. 8, 2014:
"Love it because I like the meaning and it is different." Jun. 10, 2013:
"I am 13 and my name is Lois xD I do get comments on my name at school and it's hard to make a nickname out of it. ._. My friends think my name is unique compared to there's such as Amy, Chloe, Bethany, Courtney. Even though I have asked myself, what a weird name I have, I actually like it that now I am in my teens it sounds great. xD Lois is not only a short and easy name it is different. :)" Jan. 8, 2013:
"Its my mothers name and was a Great Aunts name as well, Im pregnant and if its a girl, Im convincincing my fiance to use it as a middle name." Nov. 26, 2012:

"My name is Lois. I like it because it is short and easy to spell. In class there is a girl called Louse so pupils sometimes give me her book! I don`t know anyone appart from me called Lois. People also ask me how to spell my name. "Lois" is pronounced "Loh-is. My full name is sort of old-fashioned! Lois Joy Baker." Nov. 16, 2011:

Loey, Lo-Lo-,Lotus, LO, Luigi, and Louie. I love to write it too.
In the Bible Lois was Timothy's grandmother. Join Facebook and the LOIS CLUB!!" Aug. 3, 2011:
"Lois is great--it is not overly feminine as it doens't end in a vowel, and it cannot be butchered into a nickname. Also, it is not a common name, another plus.
I am Lois Teresa." Jul. 20, 2011:
"I hate it when people pronouce my name as louis its so annoying it s like nobody knows the name of supermans girlfriend!!" Jul. 3, 2011:
"This is my middle name but I always hated it but now I starting to like it more and more! Thank You Superman!!" Apr. 27, 2011:
"Hi! My Name is Lois too! i absolutely LOVE it! its so uncommon and unique! couldn't have been any happier with my name. I mean yeah it's annoying when people spell it wrong, not sure how as its so simple! but ah well. I wouldn't change my name at all!xx" Mar. 14, 2011:
"I love my name! The only thing that annoys me is that a lot of people can't spell or say it very well. I remember i was in an art lesson and the teacher was taking the register for the first time that school year and when it came to my name she wanted to know where i sat and she said 'Oh i thought Lois was a boys name' which really annoyed me but apart from that i really like it!" Jan. 26, 2011:
"I love my name!
as other people have, i have experienced people mis-spelling it, or mispronouncing it...
I guess i've learnt to live with it, but i don't actually know another Lois, and i realy like the fact i don't!
I get told by alot of people that my name is very unique, and an unusual name...
But thats exactly what i am!" Jan. 24, 2011:
"I really do like my name, but some people still don't know how to pronounce or spell it. When I was 8, my mom rushed into the bakery where she had ordered my birthday cake to pick it up, not looking inside the box. When we opened it at home it said "Happy Birthday Louis!" I took it very badly then but laugh about it now." Jan. 16, 2011:
"I think Lois is a great name. Its good to have an unusual name, although I hate it when people mis-spell it! Lois means superior and is greek origin. The correct way of saying it is LOH-is." Jan. 12, 2011:
"I love my name! Often pronounced worng, spelled in many different ways, and often asked if I'm Lois Lane, or Lolo, or Lo" Dec. 12, 2010:
"We have a daughter called Lois & she loves her name she is like her name individual & stands out from others because of her beauty." Dec. 4, 2010:
"I think Lois is the best name ever! I also get called Lolo and Loggy at school which is great. I hate it when people write down Lowis or Louise!!" Nov. 20, 2010:
"I love having such an unusual name. It is popular in Wales, as are lots of Biblical names, and my origins are Welsh. I do find that people mis-spell or mis-pronounce it as 'Louis' and I occasionally get letters addressed to "Mr Lois..." - the writers are given short shrift! You think with the Superman films that folk would catch on!" Oct. 27, 2010:
"I like my name so much because my name is Lois. Some of my friends call me Louis at school, but I would prefer them to call me Lois. People also spell my name wrong - Louis; Lowis... I know another girl in my ballet class called Lois too. Lois (age 6) Scotland." Oct. 23, 2010:
"I love the name. Considering it seriously for our next." Oct. 22, 2010:
"My name is spelt has two dots above the 'i' called an umlaut, and my surname is Groendijk (dutch) so i always get called Louis, lewis, louise etc. but i love it because people always remember me! power to the Lois!" Sep. 10, 2010:
"I was named for my grandmother. My mom told me that it is Greek and means Battle Maiden. I used to hate my name, but I love it now, because it is unique. Can you imagine in 40 or so years all the 80 year olds with names like Tiffany and Brittany?" Aug. 6, 2010:
"We named our new daughter Lois Olivia. We think Lois is an incredible name and will stand out in the crowd. We like the meaning, a strong female. She is named after a dear family friend who was like a grandmother to me. More power to Lois!" Jun. 29, 2010:
"Hi! I'm from the UK and Lois is not a common name. I love it so much that when my baby girl was born in February i named her Lois. It fits her perfectly." Jun. 8, 2010:
"My soon to be granddaughter will be called Lois and I think its elegant yet homely and very special. I love it, very different from the silly names given today." Jun. 6, 2010:
"My BEAUTIFUL mother is named Lois and I think is is the best name. I would love to name one of my daughters after her someday. My Mother has also never loved her name but I wish she did. She is unique, classy, elegant and has gorgeous bone structure in her face. This name definitely fits her inner and outer beauty." Apr. 8, 2010:
"I love my name :D my mom only gave it me because it was short and simple to spell (even tho lots of people spell it wrong haha). My name makes me feel different and individual which is what i am :D. Everybody comments on how nice my name is :). i think its a wonderful name :)" Mar. 18, 2010:
"I love my Name Lois! Im from The Uk and not many people have this name... its great... Im so individual and that suits my personality down to a tee! I hate that they call me Louis or Lewis! My family and friends all call me Lo-Lo :)" Feb. 4, 2010:
"When i was 8 months pregnant with my daughter I met a lovely, beautiful and exteamly polite little girl called Lois - I fell in love with the name straight away. My beautiful daughter was born and we named her Lois ..... she too is beautiful, funny, full of personality and very individual, just like her name. She likes being called Lois and unlike a previous comment, she loves Lo-Lo too and Lowie! I had 4 girls in my class at school with the same name as me - Lisa, so it must be nice to be a bit more individual!" Nov. 29, 2009:
"My name is Lois, in my primary school I was the only lois and in my secondary school there was someone else called Lois. I love my name and will not changed it for the world. It is a pain when people dont know how to pronounce my name but some times its fun watching them strugle to call my name. I always feel superior amongst my friends they tend to listen and take advice from me, this shows great power to my name. All you Lois out there am sure there are people who look up to you for advice and respect you, well done to my mum and dad for naming me Lois I lovvvvveee it." Nov. 23, 2009:
"My name is Lois and I love my mother says I have a beutiful name and she proud of it because it is original and very elegant. But what drives round the bend is when people say it is and old granny name and when people always spell it wrong and pronounce it like Lewis. Overall, I happy with my full name Lois,Elizabeth,Adams as I think it is very fpretty and original. THE NAME LOIS ROCKS!!" Oct. 28, 2009:
"My grandmother named me Mary Lois, she lived to be 98yrs old and I miss her dearly. She was the only person who used both names. I was born in 1965 and also grew up the only Lois in my school, neighborhood, ect.. When I was younger I didn't like my name, but I was still glad my name wasn't something over used like Lisa. I'm an RN now and my patients always remember my name, which pleases me. We don't give out last names, so when someone sends a card of thanks or praise there's no mistake it's me :D I've read all the comments left here and I can see myself thru the years in most of the entries." Aug. 21, 2009:
"Born in 1955, I was given the name of Lois by my mother. I don't know why she gave me this name; it certainly wasn't a name of a family member or close friend. I am proud of my name though. I grew up being the only Lois in my neighborhood and school and many people were able to remember me because of its uniqueness. Whenever I watch a movie or tv show, I always look at the credits at the end. There are many Lois' involved in film and television. I happen to be one involved in the arts - dance (teaching for 34 years). Besides Lois Lane of Superman, other well know Lois' are leading characters in the television shows "Malcolm in the Middle" and "Family Guy." When I was young I got teased alot with the Lois Lane jokes, but in general, the name comes with a lot of respect. Although most Lois' enjoy humor, there's something about the name Lois that tells people you are straight-up and no nonsense." Aug. 10, 2009:
"It took me until my teens to get used to it and now I wouldn't change it for the world. Being called Lois rocks but like everyone else on here I hate being called Louis, Louise, Lucy - yes really- Lewis and whatever other variation people manage to come up with but I have a trick now if someone repeatedly says my name wrong I mispronounce theirs or give them a rubbish shortening of their name it's amazing how quick they learn how to say it then. P.S. I love the Lois Lane thing 33 years and still not bored teehee!" Jul. 1, 2009:
"I am also thinking of lois Faith!! how bizzare my hubby wants FAITH AS THE FIRST NAME SO THINK WE WILL SETTLE ON lOIS fAITH!" Jun. 19, 2009:
"I have been Lois for 62 years, named after my mother's sister, Lois. I too have been Louis or Louise so often that in a resturant, if Louis is called for and no one jumps up, I call out "here"! The real problem with the name is trying to find a key chain or other momento with my name. Hundreds of cutsie names but not one solid "Lois"." Apr. 19, 2009:
"My name is Lois and it sounds very proffesional. I used to hate it, but i think when i'm older i will love it. I hate it when people spell or pronounce it wrong. Like "louis". It annoys me but the part that i love is that it's unique and i havn't met anyone else with the same name as mine :)" Apr. 2, 2009:
"My little girl, one yesterday, is called Lois Elizabeth. We loved the name so much as it is traditional, but at the same time unusual. She does sadly get shortened to Lolo by us and her brother Max; only sad because we tried to choose a name that couldn't be messed with!! I am mystified about why people have so much trouble with it, people can't spell it and don't understand what you are trying to say. It's only four letters! What is so hard?!! We have had Louis, Lewis, Louie...Louise!! Good job she really looks like a girl or I'd be severely offended by now!! Oh well, if she gets aggravated with the constant mistakes, Elizabeth is always great failsafe!! from Laura" Mar. 16, 2009:
"I'm called Lois and to be honest I like it :D but all I ever get called is 'Louis' or 'Lewis' I've even had my name pronounced french. Like Low-ah. If people do manage to say my name right it is almost always followed by 'Lane'. Yeah, Lois Lane - from Superman. That joke gets old after about 14 years! But really, it's a nice name and it can't really be shortened. Although a few people call me 'Lo (low)' which is kinda ironic - considering I'm tall. Despite few crappy jokes - Lois rocks :P" Feb. 13, 2009:
"I am forever being called Louis, Louise and Lous but i love my name, i live in scotland and have only met two other Lois' in my life. i think its a fab and individual name. Its a name that even though its not common you've still heard it mentioned and isn't classed as a 'new' or 'made up' name." Jan. 17, 2009:
"Hi Lois' out there, this is another Lois with an awesome family name too. I love my name and like all the Lois' before me, have experienced bewilderment and annoyance that people get it so wrong. One of the most annoying is, on the phone, you say your name to them, then spell it, they relay it back to you Louis, pronounced Looeee!! I would never change it, its great!! One of my friends named her daughter, now 3, Lois, so its still alive and kicking" Dec. 28, 2008:
"hey my name is lois but no-one pronounces it right i get called all sorts of junk when my name comes round on the register! one of my french teachers said my name wron so i corrected her and she went balistic!! but i love my name i think it really suits me,it makes me stand out cause its a odd name but i dont care i love it because it makes me have that bit of difference from anybody else." Nov. 16, 2008:
"my little girl is called lois, lolo for short too!! I love it because its different and when peopl ask her name they always comment on how nice it is and how she suits it. I def don't think its old fashioned compared to popular names like sophie, eve etc. again its never pronounced correctly which annoys me ALL the time, but you get used to I guess!" Nov. 15, 2008:
"im 20 weeks pregnant and if i have a girl its gonna be lois may! me and my partner both love it i think its a really girl cute name1 cant wait xx" Nov. 11, 2008:
"We named our 10 year old daughter Lois ans she loves it as much as us! She is a beautiful and strong youn lady. We love its uniqueness and that no one else in her school shares her name. It is all hers! Love to all you wonderful Lois's our there!" Oct. 13, 2008:
"It's my name and I'm honored to have it. My name came from my Grandmother and if I can be 1/2 of the Lois she was then I'll really be awesome! :D" Oct. 10, 2008:
"Lois, like many popular names, has Greek origins. Its meaning has been translated to 'desirable' or 'superior.'
Lois wasn't picked up by parents until the late 16th century in England. In the 1800s, American parents showed somewhat of an interest in Lois, but not nearly as much as they would a century later. Between 1900 and 1950, Lois was big in name popularity. Lois roared into the twenties with flappers, jazz and culture; perhaps the soldiers returning from World War I were fond of the name or new inventions pushed people to try out different names or maybe disregard for old customs was the cause. Whatever the reason, Lois reached its peak in the 20s. By the 1950s Lois was slowly losing favor with parents and by the 90s, the name had become a rarity, an ancient artifact worn almost exclusively by mothers and grandmothers. Will there be a Lois revolution' Only time will tell." Oct. 3, 2008:
"my names lois, and honestly i fail to understand how people can't pronounce it! its a simple four letter name. other than that, im pretty happy with my names, an since most of my friends are charlottes and jessicas, it gives me a little difference :)" Sep. 7, 2008:
"I really like my name. My parents desired a short firt name to go with my long last name. They also wanted a name the could not be shortened. Over the years it has been shortened to Lo." Sep. 6, 2008:
"Hmm.. Though it's hard to pronounce, but i still feel glad with Lois, which actually taken frm my family name: Loi (just add a "s") Majority of people around me just couldn't pronounce it n they either called me Louis or Lois Lane.. But it sound swwet when i met somebody who can pronounce it correctly. Thanks God that it's biblical unique, do hope that it'll get me a superman~ Cheers!!" Aug. 15, 2008:
"My name is Lois, actually taken from Superman when my mum and dad were watching it once lol..kinda sad but hey! Id rather that than 'Tiffany'(80's popstar) which was the second choice. I've grown to love it just cos its kinda unique. The 'Lois Lane' jokes are lame, but im used to them now and the cheesy surperman chat up lines just make me giggle - nothing to be offended by. People dont shorten my name either, which I love." May. 15, 2008:
"My name is Lois and i love it I have only met one or two people with this name and thought it was very unique bu obviously not...i think its a great name and everyone i have met loves it." May. 15, 2008:
"my parents were on the older side when I was born, mom thought bo peep was a cute name for a baby, but I am thankful my sister talked her out of it. I don't know if my dad would have really allowed THAT. I don't know how it happens, the Louise and Louis, but so many people add to the name and I don't understand it, Lois is a simple name, only four letters (like love) and it is spelled as it sounds. I get lolo, loisee and that is okay and I am married to a superman, really. Enjoy your name, it is not the letters that identify you, it is your actions, so make your name something really special, by being a great person and then Lois will be a name that means so much to so many." May. 9, 2008:
"actually my name is Loida(Filipino version of Lois)...i really love that name and it makes me feel unique..especially that it is included in the names mentioned in the Bible.." May. 7, 2008:
"hey my name is also lois, many people ive met have a hard time pronoucing it such as "louis, louise and just recently low-ass"
many also mispell it, its not a very popular name here in sydney, ive only ever met 2 other people with my same name but online and never in person. i once found out that a girl infront of me had the same name as we had to give our names for our orders, to not risk confusion i ended up using my middle name nicole instead of lois. i love my name and but i dont like it when guys ask me where my superman is or if they can be my superman. i find that pick up line quite lame LOL" Apr. 29, 2008:
"I love my name. Its true that many people dont know how to pronounce the name. I am glad my dad gave me this name." Mar. 14, 2008:
"My name is Lois, and as much as I love the name I'd say that around seven out of ten people I meet pronounce it incorrectly. People have read my name before on registers and labels etc. and expected a man to turn up before now as they thought it was "Louis"! It's pronounced "low-iss", not "loo-iss" or "loo-ee"." Feb. 16, 2008:
"My name is Lois. I love it because its different and not well used, unusual. Many people try to complicate the spelling, adding u or or making it louise. Its just simple and beautiful." Nov. 17, 2007:
"Hi, I am a 34 year old from England and I am called Lois! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE my name. Its not very popular, however, think here in England its popularity is going up again! As long as you can put up with the 'Superman' jokes you'll be ok! I would HATE to be called anything else xx" Oct. 28, 2007:
"my name is lois and i love it
i dnt get confused with anyone else and people are jealous coz my names so amazing xxxxx" Sep. 28, 2007:
"i am 16 yrs old i love my name no one in my school is called it its a very pretty name i get called lolo by my dad though. the lois lane jokes i think are fab i would never change my name amd people rember me because of my name i love it soo much people who are called lois rock" Sep. 13, 2007:
"WOW im also nineteen and my name is lois! i love it! some ppl. do call me like the louis but most just try and spell it that way i get the usual nicknames cuz it's such an easy name to mess around with lo, lolo, louisiana from texarcana(this phrase is usually sung lol), loo, lulu, lolo, and when im in trouble with dad it's LOISIE! haha mom says he's always called me that lol I also get the super man jokes but i love them lol all i gotta do if find me a superman! haha when i was in chinle az. the pastor was like ur famous lol then he later announced that there was a "lois a.k.a lois lane" visiting! right in church lol i was like uhh but i felt pretty special cuz it's a very special name! God bless to all those girls named LOIS!
our name's even biblical lol" Aug. 18, 2007:
"My name is Lois I'm 15 and proud of my name. I get a lot of the Lois Lane jokes but I embrace it and say I'm lucky to be with a superhero. I never figured out how people could misspell the name and stick a "U" in it for Louis lol. I love my nicknames Lolo, Loey, even Louis when a guy is flirting. I have met other Lois's but the one I would have liked to meet would be my grandma I was named after her and she died before I got to meet her. The name is old fashioned but I'm bringing it back into style."
