We chose Rain because without rain there is no life...without our Kaya Rain we have no life! We also liked that it meant enlightenment, that it was unique and gave a nod to our Native heritage. While pregnant I put my hand on my belly and said if you're a girl and like the name Kaya Rain, kick." Oct. 24, 2015:

"Hi my name is Khaya and I'm 29 yrs. old. I pronounce my name as Ki-ya. My grandmother wanted to give me this name(without knowing any meaning to the name), and my mom loved it! Growing up, I didn't like my name because it was different, but as I got older, I loved it! I think only 2 people ever looked at my name and pronounced it correctly(lol). I've been called everything from Kia to Kayla, and there's no "l" in my name. Every1 who never heard of "kaya" says its a pretty name." Jan. 25, 2011:

People would put an "L" in my name oh just pisses me off to this day when some pronounces my name wrong. Kaya is a beautiful name within itself and the person that bears that name is just as beautiful. Nice to have met all you beautiful Kayas in the world." Nov. 16, 2010:

"My name is Kaya and I'm 14 years old. I live in Europe and in my country, this name is pretty popular. I've been talking to a lot of people from U.S. and even though some of them never really heard of the name, they didn't ask about it much. My name there is unique and I guess that's what even atracts other people. I used to hate my name, that my brother chose it for me, because else my mother would name me something like Gloria. But now, I actually love my name, 'cause it makes me quite unique." Aug. 6, 2010:

There are several meanings, and this is the one we have named her after.
"

"" May. 9, 2010:
"My son is named Khaya (rhymes with Hi-ya). Though I know that name is popular as a girl's name in the U.S., we chose it to reflect his Xhosa South African heritage. Khaya means "home" in Xhosa and is a popular name with many variations for both genders (Mikhaya, Likhaya, Nomakhaya, and Khayaletu are some). I have also met a few female Kaya's who claim it as a Hopi girl name that means "wise"." Apr. 3, 2010:
"kaya means rich in Indonesian so it is a nice name" Feb. 11, 2010:
"My oldest daughter's name is Kaya Marie. We pronounce it Kay - ah. We love it!" Feb. 2, 2010:
"My oldest is named Kaya... she is now 10. We always says it rhymes with "Hi ya" ;)
We had stumbled on the name as a Hopi name meaning Elder Sister. And it seemed really right. Now I have two children and she is the best big sister I could have asked for (my youngest has special needs and Kaya goes above and beyond for her sis)
Very often people will pronounce is Kay-ah. She just rolls her eyes and ignores them til they say it right...trying to break her of that. ;)
Oddly when she was 4 years old American Girl introduced a Kaya doll also Native American but Nez Perce.
Kind of cool." Jan. 7, 2010:
"I'm having a baby girl, due 1-8-10 and I'm naming her Nikaya Irie. My boyfriend liked the name kaya (hes a huge bob marley fan) and i also thought it was a cute girls name. But we wanted something different than just Kaya, so I added the 'Ni' to the beginning. She'll go by Nikaya, Kaya, or Nikki. all depending on what people can remember haha! and yes, i know its a slang for weed. but really, what isnt a slang for weed? haha" Nov. 20, 2009:
"My name is Kia, but it's pronounced with a long "i", like "k-eye-uh". My parents got it from the movie Willow, haha. Other than mispronunciation (mistaken for the car, obviously), I love my name." Oct. 31, 2009:
"my name is kaiya, pronounced the same way as kaya. i correct people all the time! and people are always telling me that its really unique and really pretty. Im seventeen and i have only met one person with the same name.
kaiya is japaneese and means forgiveness,it also means life and living in english" Aug. 13, 2009:
"I have a sister named Claudia and growing up we called her Kaya for short. It has stuck with her since then. I think it would have been spelled Caya but better pronounced if spelled Kaya and she likes the difference that it is spelled with the K. I heard the Bob Marley song and had to show it to her." Jul. 15, 2009:
"My daughter's name is Kaya. Kaya isn't actually slang for "weed." It means "enlightenment" in Rastafarian, hence the song." Jun. 23, 2009:
"Kaya is the name of my dog. She is an American Staffordshire Pit Bull. She is so loving and gentle and has been a wonderful pet. She loves when I play the Bob Marley song Kaya and dances very happily when I sing it. She is also well liked "in her neighborhood" and receives gifts at Christmas time from our neighbors. Kaya is a great name. For a woman, young girl, or dog. By the way I bought her from a man named Kiah ironically." May. 1, 2009:
"I like the name Kaya... It's really common in my country though." Apr. 29, 2009:
"My name is Kaya, im 16 and i love my name. I have met one other person in my life with the same name, and i know of the actress Kaya Scodelario. My mother got the name from the Bob Marely alubm & song. She wasnt 100% sure it was slang for weed, she liked to think of the meaning more as 'a good feeling'. Not too long ago she met someone who told her it was infact slang for weed, but she didnt name me for that intention. It does often get mispronounced or misspelt but it doesnt bother me. Its diverse, i like all the different meanings and i when i found out that it was slang for weed, i found it hilarious lol." Mar. 30, 2009:
"I wish I was named Kaya. It is so beautiful. I actually first heard it on actress Kaya Scodelario, and have loved it since then. Although I like my name, Cara, I would prefer Kaya." Mar. 9, 2009:
"my daughter is 12 years old and is called kaya but we spell it kiah. didn't know it was slang for weed or that it was a bob marley song.even though my dad is a big bob marley fan." Feb. 1, 2009:
"I wanted to name our 2nd daughter Kaya. My brother in law didn't like it because of some character in the movie "Willow." And the grandparents were all about the stodgy names. Anyway, my wife wanted Lorelei and a few coincidences led to her winning that argument. Our 3-month-old girl is named Lorelei Kaya. I was aware of the many meanings, and I am a fan of Bob Marley, but I'd never name a kid just after a song/album. I just think it's a beautiful sounding name. You guys are a bunch of weird metaphysical hippies for the most part." Jan. 30, 2009:
""Kaya" means enlightenment in the Rastafari dialect. Which is what Bob Marley spoke." Dec. 23, 2008:
"My daughter's name is Kaya, she is 12 years old. It means lots of things in lots of languages, not just Jamaican slang! For example, in Turkish it means rock, in South African it means home, in Indonesian it means becoming, it is also an American Indian name, a shortened derivative of Kaya'aton'my, which means one who arranges rocks in Nez Perce. It is also the name of an ancient Korean tribal league. So it means an awful lot more than weed...." Dec. 18, 2008:
"I have loved the album kaya since high school. We swiped it from my friends dads (major hippy) record collection on 4-20 when i was 16. It was my intro to bob. Now i have a dog named kaya. A blue pit I adopted. Her name was chloe (4 months old) that was too preppy and just would not do. Plus i love my mary jane." Oct. 22, 2008:
"I love this name! Im having my first child in January 09 and have been a Bob Marley fan since the moment I heard him for the first time, Kaya is the perfect name (if I have girl!) :) Its perfect because my parnter was named for an ACDC album so it runs in the family! I thought it was quite a unusual name, but I guess not :)
Its still wonderful though." Aug. 31, 2008:
"My name is Kaya and I am 40 years old!! I was named after the Playboy Centerfold in the November 1967 issue...I have not met anyone with my name. I have grown to love my name in spite of ALL of the mispronunciations. I can't stand it when I get called 'Kayla' as if I forgot the /l/!!" Jun. 20, 2008:
"I'm going on my 33rd week of pregnancy and for a girl we have the name "Kaya Sky" picked out :) I'm not finding out the sex until birth but in a way I hope it is because I love the name so much." Apr. 15, 2008:
"I also LOVE this name. My first born girls name will be Kaya Robyn. :)" Jan. 7, 2008:
"This is my daughters name. I named her Kaya because of it's Hopi Indian origin meaning "Younger elder sister, wise child." It is a perfect fit for her and her personality. People (especially teachers)are constantly pronouncing it Kay-Yuh instead of Kai-Yuh and that tends to get very unnerving at times...Other than that, I know her name was destined to be Kaya...she told me so from my womb! *wink*" Jan. 7, 2008:
"This is my puppies name.... I was always told it meant Marijuana but I loved the name so much I didn't care :)" Dec. 14, 2007:
"My name is Kaya. It's pronounced "Kay-yah" or "Kay-uh." Everyone always tells me they love my name. I love my name too!" Sep. 29, 2007:
"My first daughter is named Kaya. We pronounce it like "Maya". I love it, it suits her and she gets positive reactions to it. People tend to want to pronounce it "Kae-uh" like the name Kayla. We have met a few Kayas in the six years since ours was born." Aug. 10, 2007:
"my name is Kaya. it's supposed to be pronounces 'kah-ya' or like it is in the song by Bob Marley, but I always introduce myself as 'kai-ah'. i prefer it because it doens't sound nearly as harsh. people never pronounce my name how it should be - they usually say 'kai ah' (in which case i tellt hem they're right), 'kay-ah' (which i hate), or mistake it with the name Kayla, which generally makes my respect for them drop a couple levels, unless they honestly thought it was a typo (but most end up peering at the sheet and going, "You're right!" after I inform then that there's no L)." Jun. 29, 2007:
"We're naming our daughter Kaya. This means "capable" or "able" in tagalog (Philippine language). It's pronounced just as it's spelled Ka - ya. I love that it means capable and it's great that it sounds good too!" May. 15, 2007:
"This is my daughter's name too. I changed the spelling to Kaia as I got tired of her nursery teacher mispronouncing her name. At least with this spelling they ask how to say it! I have heard of one other Kaia in my neighbourhood. Everyone will always remember her and she will never be called Kaia H or Kaia 2, she'll always be the only one!" Oct. 12, 2006:
"My name is Kaya. It is supposed to be pronounced as it is in the song by Bob Marley. I've always preferred kai-ah, so it's only my family who say kiy-uh. I'm endlessly being called kay-ah and kayla. I've met a Kiah and a Kaiya before, but never another Kaya." Oct. 9, 2006:
"People sometimes pronounce my name Kia (like the car) or KAy-a, with a hard "a". For some reason lots of people read it and say Kayla too haha. The easiest way I've found is to say that it sounds like Maya. That seems to help. I really like my name because its not that common and because it has many meanings in different cultures" May. 27, 2006:
"My daughters name. It is mispronounced constantly! Rhymes with Maya or Maia. (not Kay) Met one other person named Kaiya. Wanted her to have a name that a million other people didn't have." Jun. 24, 2005:

"Hi my name is kaya I live in England and I am 15 years old.My parents gave me this name after the Bob Marley album but I have also been told it means ganja. I like my name but I can?t imagine it suiting me when I become older" Feb. 10, 2020:
"My name is Kaya (ky-ya) and tbh sometimes I really hate my name, or wish I just could have an easier name. My friend first spelled it as Kia. Most teachers at my school say Kaya (kay-a), or Kayla, adding an L to my name. Some boys at my school call me Kia, Kayla, or Kaya (kay-a) just to annoy me. Sometimes though I like how not many people have my name. No one in my school has my name, and sometimes makes me feel special." Nov. 28, 2019:

"My daughter is three. We named her Kaya, and pronounce it Kie-ah. The influence of the Marley song and album played a factor, and I was aware of the colloquial usage as meaning good sensimilla cannabis, though that had nothing to do with the choice. It is a beautiful name for a beautiful little girl who shines brightly each and every day. The multiple meanings, and multiple cultural influences in aggregate, along with the limited popularity worldwide, provide for a very remarkable name that allows for an individual sense of identity while it fosters a potential for cultural exploration and investigation in reconciling those aspects.
An aside, to the cannabis issue, the word Kaya was used with limited acclaim as a reference to strong and seedless cannabis, also referred to as sensimilla. It appears that at least one specific genetic strain has taken that name in apparent reference to this situation. It is my understanding that many of the names assigned to specific cannabis strains often reference such cultural inferences. Given the life and works of Mr. Nesta Robert Marley, anyone referencing the late artist probably does not remain neutral on the cannabis issue on the whole. A further aside, Kaya is also a word used to describe forested sacred religious sites in the Nation of Kenya. And though I can't currently find reference to it, my recollection seems to be that there is also another plant that predates the cannabis usage by quite some time, and informally and commonly is referred to as Kaya." "Im english, i have named my daughter Kaya, (prenounced Kay-a) She is now 7months old, and we dont know of anyone with this name. Everyone says its such a lovely name. It sounds pretty. "I absolutly LOVE the name Kaya! But reading these comments, I think I've been pronouncing it incorrectly. I pronounce it Kay-ah. And many people seem to be using it as Ki-ah. I personally prefer the way I spell it and shall hopefully be calling my first daughter Kaya Louise (After my sister Ellie Louise) Or Kaya Marie simply because I like the name!!! My second daughter (I hope to have at least 2 girls!) Shall hopefully be called Mia. Mia Grace :D" Dec. 7, 2009: | |
