"Hi! My name is Elise. I?m ten years old. Some people in school keep calling me Elsie. Which is annoying. But I ignore that. I love my name. Despite of people pronouncing it wrong. People say my name is a beautiful name. Love the name!" Mar. 30, 2020:
"Hi i'm Elise i'm 9 years old. at school on the register they pronounce my name Elsie or Ellis which is annoying. When i first came to school i was called Elisha by one of the pupils. i don't mind if people get my name wrong im used to it. People often compliment my name which i enjoy." Nov. 26, 2019:
"The weirdest spelling of my name I?ve ever gotten was in Starbucks and they spelled it like Oles. I often get called Elsie, Alice, Ellis, and Elsa by mistake. I prefer it to be pronounced like uh-LEASE, but many people say EE-lease. It?s kind of really annoying. I really don?t think my name is that hard to spell or prounounce but people always screw it up!" Mar. 21, 2019:
"my name is elise and i really want a long version of elise but not elizabeth." May. 17, 2015:

"I am 12 years old and I love my name. I have only ever met 1 person with the same name as me. People do pronounce it wrong sometimes but I just tell them how to say it. Its unique and I love it. I have had some people take the mick out of my name but that was only 1 time. other than that I love my name. its unique, to match my personality. :)" May. 15, 2013:
"Hi my name is Elise I'm fourteen and I love my name it's very unique and has such a beautiful name the only problem I have is that I am from south Texas so the read my name like this: ELIS--e they pronounce the e and it is very annoying but the only thing u can do Is tell them how to pronounce it correctly anyway I love my name" Feb. 9, 2013:
"I named my daughter Elise - she is now 2 years old and I have received nothing but compliments for her name! It has been misread in the doctors office etc at Elsie which bothers me a little but not too much just yet. I love this name - it suits her perfectly. She got the most delicate features, soft sandy blonde hair, huge blue/green eyes with amazingly long lashes and she never, ever stops smiling & laughing. I'm so glad we picked this name. BTW we're from Scotland and we named her after my mother-in-law who is called Elisabeth (as this is a french form of the same name).
Love love love Elise :)!!" Jan. 14, 2013:
"I named my daughter Elise and the first flaw I discovered right away is people calling her "Elsie" just like everyone else mentioned. I guess I had more hope in the human race having the ability to read correctly. Oh well, I always get compliments on it from those who do get it correct. :)" Jul. 27, 2012:
"I love what the name Elise means "Otah/Promise to God" but I plan on using it as a middle name pairing it up with Sophia wich means "Wisdom". Sophia Elise I love it!" Oct. 5, 2011:
"We named our daughter Elise and absolutely love it! We receive compliments on it all the time, and couldn't see her with any other name. It's beautiful, classic and not too common which is exactly what we were looking for in a name." Mar. 4, 2011:
"I am naming my daughter Elise. I love the name. Even myself at first I would pronounce it differently if I wasn't thinking about it. But I love it and I want her to be the only one in her class with her name." Feb. 12, 2011:
"'Elise' is meant to be pronounced as 'Elize'. However since it's a non-English name in the English speaking world the 's' is pronounced as a hard 's' rather than with a 'z' sound. But it's all up to the Elise in question on how they pronounce it. :)" Jan. 29, 2011:
"My name is Elise as well. I'm French so mispronunciation isn't much of a problem, there aren't any wrong ways to pronounce it in French lol. But I have spent a lot of time in the US, Canada & the UK and what mostly came up was Elsie. I love my name and I wish it weren't becoming so popular.... I don't want it to become mainstream. But well, what can I do." Jan. 1, 2011:
"My middle name is Elise and I love it. (My first name is Brittany). I always promised myself that if I had a daughter I would name her Elise, because I love the name so much. When it is written on paper, people tend to pronounce is "Ellis" for some reason, but it sounds much more pleasing to the ear, once I correct them. It's a very pretty name, but not over the top or weird, and it not very common. Very simple and feminine." Oct. 22, 2010:
"My name is Elise.
People very OFTEN mispronounce it. They occasionally spell it wrong.
The way I pronounce it is E- lease. It is my name therefore I can pronounce it whichever way I choose, plus my family and friends pronounce it such way.
To me this is correct because it is French, and the French place accents over the 1st E, it is pronounced E-lease. I have met a few people with the same name.
Overall, I think it is GORGEOUS.
Just please stick to the traditional spelling, it is CLASSIC. Other spellings are slightly tacky.
And P.S. it does not mean "special cow". It means "God's Promise". Elsie is a cow, not Elise." May. 28, 2010:
"My name is Elyse and I love my name. At first I hated it but after time I can to love the orginallity of my name. I do hate it when people call me Elsie, I just want to hit them in the head. lol I'm the only Elyse in my whole town and I wouldn't have it any other way" May. 8, 2010:
"My name is elise and alot of people say it like it has an A in front instead of an E. alot of them say my names like LC. literally like that. its annoying. everyone corrects them. my name has been spelled like Alyse or Alise. by the way i was born in 1994" Oct. 20, 2009:
"I definitely agree that my name has been mispronounced plenty of times, and it doesn't help that my last name is just as hard to pronounce! But, on the other hand, it's a wonderful name! and I'm glad to share it with all the other Elise's in the world! ELISE'S UNITE!!" Aug. 28, 2009:
"Sometimes people mispronouce my name, but I have gotten so use to it that I simply just correct them and move on." Aug. 27, 2009:
"well elise is my middle name and most people say it wrong but some ask me how to say it,some of my friends say "alise" but my family and boyfriend are the only people that say "elise" but i love elise and wish my mom made it my first name instead of my middle name." Jul. 26, 2009:
"My name is Elise Marie and I love it! like tons of people have said it is annoying to be call "elsie" or "u-lise" i even get "allis" my french teacher sets all my new teachers streight on how to pronounce my name before the start of a new year. but i love it because it's such a pretty name any little kid would be lucky to have such a unique name." Jul. 8, 2009:
"My name is Elise and I love it. The only catch is the mispronunciation like everyone has stated, which happens quite freqently. I absolutely hate it when people say Elsie because like someone else mentioned it reminds me of a cow. But I don't have a problem with "uh-lise" or "a-lise"." Apr. 30, 2009:
"OMG!!! i love this name! a lot of people say it wrong and spell it wrong but when you say it right i love it" Apr. 20, 2009:
"I love my name and how unique it is! I hate it when people call me "Elsie", which is all too frequent. And very few people call me "Elise", it's usually "Alise", which I've gotten used to. I've never met another "Elise", only an "Alise"." Apr. 18, 2009:
"My name is Elyse and i love the y in my name and how unique it is. I also get called elsie, especially if i have a supply teacher at school, it reminds me of a cow. Iım not quite sure whether to say my name ee-lease or el-ees. Overall i love my name and also the fact that there is a huge discussion about this name." Apr. 15, 2009:
"My sister is Elise...and she will be very quick to tell you it is NOT Uh-lise! Occasionally she gets the Elsie pronunciation, but very rarely." Mar. 25, 2009:
"I didnt know so many people had my name!! my name is Elise Taylor and i have always loved it:]..except people call me AH-Leese or Elsie..Elsie is a cow so it always makes me mad..other than that i really like my name:]" Mar. 25, 2009:
"Like everyone else it seems when i was younger I hated my name. Every one called my Elsie and it really made me angry and all I ever wanted was a tooth brush with my name on it but I never got that wish! I like that I spell it with a Y. Elyse just has more interest written out because the y goes below the line, weird observation I know!" Mar. 19, 2009:
"I was named Elise and when I was younger I absolutely hated the fact that people did not know how to pronounce it. Phonetically: EE..leese. I often get Elsie instead of Elise and really do not like that one as it is a completely different name. Now that I am older, I love my name!!! It is a short form of Elizabeth and means God in my Oath.
Two songs have my name: Letter to Elise (The Cure) and Fur Elise (Beethoven)." Feb. 28, 2009:
"My name is Leilani Elise. Hardly anyone pronounces my name properly. One thing I notice is that I pronounce my name different. Elise like EE-lease. That's how my parents pronounced it so I guess that's how they wanted me to say it. I didn't used to like my name, but now I do. Both names refer to Heaven and God." Feb. 27, 2009:
"My name Elise to and i think its funny because i never wouldve expected this name to be so popular and yeah alot of times people call me Alise i hate it" Nov. 15, 2008:
"My name is Elise, but I prefer to pronounce it Ah-lease.
A lot of people call me Elsie which makes me mad or if people say "At least" it sounds like Elise. Kinda annoying" Aug. 6, 2008:
"My name is Elise nicole too! It seems like a really common combination! I had a friend in elementary called Nicole Elise :)
Yeah, it's a french form of Elizabeth. In french it's pronounced eh-leeze, but i never say that b/c americans wouldn't get it! so I say a-lease. Oh and there's the PJ Harvey song "Perfect Day Elise".
I love my name...if I have a daughter I might name her Elise II ..
j/k :P" Jun. 26, 2008:
"My name is Elisse. I know. Its spelt differently to others but thats what i like about it. The only bad thing is I can't find anything with my name on it. My best friend has the same name but spelt differently (Alysse." May. 21, 2008:

"Very pretty and elegant - glad it is still not very popular!" Dec. 28, 2006:
"Quite pretty. I really like it because of Beethoven's work, "Fur Elise." Sooo elegant!" Dec. 23, 2006:
"I think it's a much better and much cooler name than plain old Elsie. It's a good alternative should anyone be on the verge of honouring grandmother Elsie but still think of it as old-fashioned" Dec. 8, 2006:
"It is a beautiful name and I plan to name my daughter Elise." Jun. 19, 2006:

"I named my daughter Kendall Elise and I think it's a beautiful name. I always hear positive comments on the name Elise as well as Kendall Elise being paired together." Dec. 26, 2014:
"My name is Elise. (I'm 13) I pronounce it UH-lease, but many people pronounce it differently (E.g. Alice, Elsie, EEH-lease, El"eye"se..) but I've grown to accept it. I have never met another Elise, so I find my name pretty unique. One problem I have is when I enter a new class, or change a teacher. My classmates and teachers have trouble pronouncing my name, so I'll try and teach them how to pronounce it the way I'm used to, but if they can't, I'm ok with it." Oct. 22, 2013:
"My name is Elise. It is a great name but on my soccer team there are 2 other elise's. So I get confused when the coach calls one of us.I am 8 and the name is becoming more popular. I hear a lot of toddlers with my name" Mar. 8, 2013:
"My name is elyse and I have met very few people with the same name! I didn't like it for awhile but I guess it took 16 yeas to get over it. I get comments on hOw pretty my name is -once they get the pronunciation right(;- it's a privilege to have a unique name and it's always fun when you meet someone with the same name as you(:" Dec. 28, 2011:
"I'm an Elise and I've always received comments on how beautiful the name is! I don't get too many mispronunciations. My biggest pet peeve is when they take the classical spelling and make it so tacky. My mother always said to choose a name a child can grow with...Elise fits a little girl, a teen, and a professional." Nov. 27, 2011:
"I named my daughter Elyse, which i liked and my husband loved, but as the other comments most people mispronounce it so i'm considering changing it, don't want her growing up constantly having to correct people who obviously can't read..:) Hope i'm making the right decision..." Apr. 16, 2011:
"My name is Elyse and I'm sorry but I cannot stand it when people pronounce it E-leese. It is a shortened version of Elizabeth. And Elizabeth is pronounced Uh-lizabeth. Just think of the name Lisa backwards. a-lis - I have had my name butchered through the years. I love my name growing up I only knew two people with my name and both pronounced it like me but spelled it Elise. In France the name is pronounced in all the above ways. It sure seems to be a popular name these days. Most recently in the movies The Tourist and The adjustment Bureau. And they even pronounce it the same way as I do! Kind of exciting!!! haha coolest name ever!" Mar. 5, 2011:
"My name is Elise also. Like many of the ladies I hated it as a child because of the mispronounciation and it was uncommon. I got adjusted to it in my 20's but learn to love it and appreciate it. Now at the age of 43 it's precious because I've learned the meaning/origin of it. Oath or pledged to God. Nothing can be better!" Dec. 26, 2010:
"Elise is at the top of my list for baby girl names, but I'm having a very hard time convincing my husband. He has a difficult time pronouncing it. I like the pronunciation el-eese, but it makes him sing Feliz Navidad every time I mention it!" Oct. 14, 2010:
"To comment May 29--you're right and you're wrong. My mother who would be about 104 now if she were alive, was French and the accent you spoke about does put the emphasis on the first letter, but--it also changes the "e" to an "a" or "Ah" if you elide it and the rest is Lize or lees. It's like my name that I see such much spelled wrong by people who don't know a lick of French. Rene[accent acute] if its a MAN'S name! The added "e" makes it feminine. French has genders. But as someone said, it's your name so how you [mis]spell or [mis]prounce it, it's yours to do what you want with! :)" Aug. 20, 2010:
"My name is Elise. Like a few others have said, I've gotten the occasional "Elsie", and even "Elsa" "Elissa" and "Elisha"....people just reading off names too quickly and not paying enough attention. It does frustrate me a bit, but I've lived with it for 21 years...so I'm used to it by now. Rest assured, I correct them to the proper form of EE-LEASE :)" Aug. 15, 2010:
"I named my daughter Elise in 2004. I LOVE the name - its classic and recognizable - not weird, but not common. I named her after my grandma Elizabeth (Elise is Elizabeth in French)
I have yet to meet another Elise her age. I knew of one growing up - and see the name on TV from time to time.
The UH-lise doesn't bother me at all -- but ELSIE???? People are just dumb when it comes to reading names....
Funny story -- her dad and I were going through names - I had a huge list and he asked which I liked best - I said "Elise" he was non-committal. Family Ties was on and he said "Whats the moms name, doesn't she have a cool name?" So we watched and watched and waited for them to say her name -- and were shocked when they called her Elise! So the name was set!" Apr. 18, 2010:
"Ny name is Ellise. People often pronounce it as
"Elsie" but it is like "Alise" I just met someone today
with the same name and she said the meaning of the name Elise is "special cow". Really? Haha." | |
