"I love my name and love it when I meet others with it.
And I hate it that even after I have said my name a zillion times, some still insist on writing or saying "Anita." Like I don't know my own name and am adding an "r" for no reason at all, except to confuse them.
I would have never guessed it until i happened upon a website devoted to people named Anitra, but there are hundreds if not thousands of anitras. Some will say that their parents loved a Grieg/Gent (not sure if I got those names spelled just right) opera which had an enchanted passage entitled Anitras Dance and that is how they got their name. I like my own mother's story best. And I personally think it accounts for the surge in the name in the early 1970s. At that time there was a model on the Price Is Right named Anitra Ford. We are African-American and she was believed to be the first African-American among "Barker's Beauties" ever on the show. My mother thought the name unique and interesting and when I was born in the summer of 1973, she gave it to me.

"My name is Anitra and my life is horrible. I always blame it on my name. I always have horrible luck and stuff. Right now an ambulance is outside and it wont shut up. And I get bad grades for having ADD. My parents abuse me, too. my sisters have cool names such as Angela and Amanda. We have an A thing going on in the family, but my parents are Greg and Narcissa. Even Narcissa is better than Anitra, but my parents fawn over my name everyday. I wish my life wasn't so miserable, but with a name like anitra how could you ever learn to love life? I could never love life if I tried. I often wish upon stars to have a better life but no, no no! Stars never work. Some may call me emo and well that's just fine with me but I assure you I'm not. At least I won't seem that way in heaven or wherever I'm going. Anyway my point is my name just about killed me and I know that one day when I'm dead I will have no regrets whatsoever. Bye now. "I was born May of 1960. My mom told me she had actually chosen a different name for me. Then a new family moved into our neighborhood with a little girl the name mom had chosen for me. The little girl was a spoiled brat alway screaming knocking over garbage cans, not doing what her parents ask of her. So mom decided to change my name.
Growing up I hated my name because it was so different. I was teased because they all thought my name was Anita and I couldn't pronounce my own name. I have only heard the name Anitra 5 times.
The first time I heard someone else with the name Anitra was the model on The Price is Right. The next was a young woman on the Wheel of Fortune. The next was an article in a magazine. The last time was a woman running for office in Portland, Oregon. As I grew in age I began really loving my name. And now I am proud to have the name ANITRA" Apr. 17, 2018:
"My younger sister was named Anitra. I have never met or heard of anyone else with that name. Unfortunately, she died at age 49, following a routine colonoscopy, when the physician perforated her intestine. She was assistant to Elizabeth Dole, when she was head of Dept. of Transportation."
