The Irish name Tracey is derived from the native Irish O'Treasaigh Septs. The name is taken from the Irish word "treasach" meaning "war-like" or "fighter". It is also translated as "higher", "more powerful" or "superior". It may also be derived from the Irish word for three, with an association to the Tuatha Dý Danann.
There were numerous variations of the name but in modern times usually only the following forms are found: Tracey, Tracy, Treacey and Treacy in English and ý Treasaigh (masculine), Ný Threasaigh (feminine) in Irish. The English spelling of the name appears to be inter-changeable and different variations can be found within a family or even for an individual. When tracing ancestors all spelling of the name should be checked. For convenience the spelling Tracey is used on this website. Usually, the spelling Treacy is particular to Ireland. "always hated it tried to change at age 16 lawyer said parents would fight it, i got it changed at 21 .

"My Name is Tracey and I am a guy at 52 - so not only was I given a girl's name, but I was given the girl spelling - yay! As many others have said, this has been nothing but trouble. Finally in my mid 20's I started going by Tray since my sister often called me that. It has made a difference but how stupid to call a boy Tracey. I'd like to think it had something to do with the Johnny Cash song but no, it was just a name my mother liked - thanks for the grief!" Sep. 6, 2018:
"Most of the positive comments are from women who like their name and not men. I commend all the men who had to live their lives with a name that is almost always a woman. I have only known one guy named Tracy and that was in high school. I have ran into numerous girls with the name and I think that is a good name for a female but not a man. Just my opinion." Sep. 3, 2018:
"Naming a boy Tracy is child abuse. By the looks at the popularity of the name today rarely are people doing such a dumb thing. People please think carefully on how the name you give your child with affect him/her throughout their lives." Sep. 3, 2018:
"Horrible name for a boy. Reminds me of the Jonny Cash song, "A Boy Named Sue"" Aug. 28, 2018:
"I am a man who was named Tracy. I am 56 years old. It was my dad's idea to name me Tracy. I hate that name with a passion. I got made fun of my entire childhood. When I was 5 years old my dad deserted me and took my older sister with him. In those days custody was made on a state basis. He took her to another state and got custody of her. When I was 15 my dad got a hold of me and laughed when I told him about my childhood and how much I hate that name. He laughed. I wanted to kill him right there. The rage I have in me almost cost me my freedom. I hate my father more than anyone else on earth. I also was a Marine and was made fun of in there as well. I changed my name later in life. 98% of the population named Tracy are women. Do not name your son Tracy!! It will affect him negatively for life. After I changed my name my life improved but I am scarred from the experiences from my childhood." Aug. 8, 2018:

"My name is TRACY which is the female spelling as the Male version has the E.
I am fed up with people giving me the boy version and spelling with an E.
However, thanks to the Essex association with the name and the numerous shortened versions including Trace I hated it when growing up. I didn't mind my mum calling me TRACKY or my brother who often called me TRISH as shortened or pet names.
But going abroad to a Spanish speaking country to live caused havoc as people couldn't spell or say my name!
Well anyway, I have the female spelling of the name TRACY. please don't use the male version with an E" Dec. 20, 2020:
"Is the spelling Tracy also for girls? Because I want to know lol" Sep. 7, 2020:
"Horrible name for a boy. Think twice before naming a child any name that can cause teasing or hardship." Jun. 3, 2020:
"I?m a male, age 65 with my name spelled Tracey. I think the added ?e? makes it an even more female spelling. To be honest, though, my name has never particularly bothered me. There were very few Tracys of either gender then. But I was always aware that my mom especially wanted a daughter after 4 boys. I was it. Long hair and dresses as a child but mostly stopped after 1st grade. It could have been worse." Oct. 18, 2018:
"Tracy here. I am male. I am in my fifties now. When I was a kid, my mother always told me that Tracy was a male's name long before it ever became a female's name. My friends just called me Trace for short or just "T." If I had it to do over again, I'd probably take another first name. But my mother was so dear and loved my name, I couldn't have change it without breaking her heart." Aug. 22, 2016:
"I am 54 soon to be 55 i have now started putting my middle name in every thing now as i have had 54 years of hassle with my name Tracy i now spell it with Tracy-Roy yet you would think that people can read with roy there but nope i still get bank statements/bills for a MRS yet i am not married....had a rough time going through school with fights...not the normal one to one but more like 8 to 12 every day and all at the same time i ran away at 16 and joined the army and was surprised that there were 6 of us all called the same...it sort of helped me a lot....women tend to like a guy called tracy ...so i have sort of got used to it over the last 54 yrs...." Jul. 23, 2015:
"I AM A FEMALE SPELLED TRACEY, NO ONE GETS IT RIGHT, EVEN WHEN THEY REPLY TO MY EMAILS WITH MY NAME IN THE ADDRESS, THEY OMIT THE E.
I WAS TOLD BY MY MOTHER THAT TRACY WAS THE BOY'S SPELLING, AND TRACEY WAS THE FEMALE SPELLING. PEOP;E GIVE ME A WORSE TIME ABOUT MY LAST NAME, ALWAYS MISPRONOUNING IT, AND WHEN I SAY IT, PEOPLE CORRECT ME AND SAY OH YOU MEAN xxxxxxxx. GUESS I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPELL MY FIRST NAME, OR PRONOUNCE MY LAST." Apr. 17, 2013:
"I am a Traci, born in 1972. It's a great name! I even like it spelled the "cutsey" way! Lol" Mar. 25, 2013:
"I am a 57 year old (female) Tracy. When I was born in the 50's my daddy picked it out (back then it was a BOY's name & he wanted a boy). I love my name; it fits me as it's unique & individualistic. It's irritating when people spell it as "Tracey" or worse, the cutsey "Traci". At least my mom didn't name me Debbi or Cindy, both popular names at that time." Jan. 22, 2013:
"Thanks for helnpig me to see things in a different light." Jul. 12, 2012:
"My name is Tracee and I love the spelling because I have not come across with many other people whos is spelt like mine." May. 24, 2012:

"I am a 44 year old female named Tracey and I like my name; however most people insist on spelling it Tracy." Apr. 11, 2010:
"I like my name, spelled Tracy, because it's not a common name any more. I was named after a close friend of the family's but her name had an e in it, like the Irish spelling. I have red hair so I know somewhere along the line I have some Irish background so knowing my name originated from Ireland makes me feel good about myself. Maybe once or twice in my life someone has commented on my name, asking if it's a boys name or how to spell it but usually it just is what it is. I do know though that when someone says "Tracy" they're talking about me or when someone I know hears the name Tracy they think of me because I have probably only met one or two people my whole life who know two Tracys of any spelling. A couple of times recently when I told people my name was Tracy Evans they said, "Oh that's really your name? Isn't that the name of a famous person?" I don't think it is, so I just say "Yeah! It's me!"" Jun. 18, 2008:
"my name is tracy nd i only know one other person with this name its not a very common name.its nice nd easy 2 say,nd i like it coz not many eople have it." Nov. 13, 2007:
"I am a bloke with the name Tracy, living in the UK. being 49 now, I have had a long time to put up with the stupid, ignorant comments people make. I am proud of my name, will not let those whose only contact with the name is through Thunderbirds. There are not many of us guys with this name, especially in the UK, but if anyone would like to share experiences of living with this name, contact me at [email protected]" Sep. 22, 2007:
"My name is Tracy and nobody can spell my name correctly. It's always Tracey or Traci or Tracie.
In school, I was constantly teased, so I took up martial arts. Now, I work in international business and the use of the name in movies by women means that every foreigner I meet asks me, "Isn't that a girl's name?"
I've thought about changing my name to Jeff. Something that won't get misspelled or cause constant confusion." Sep. 14, 2007:
"I'm aTracy , and no, i have never run into anyone with the name, I'm 48.
The only problem I had was with people saying "Dick Tracy"
Haha! Sign of the times
My grandmother was Irish, and my name was prononced Tra-see" Aug. 11, 2007:
