"This is wierd. I have been called Scott by people all my life. I had a barber call me Scott for 3 years. He was proud he called everyone by thier first name, so I didn't have the heart to correct him. Left for grad school, came back three years later, I walked in the door and he called me Scott. I corrected him, "No, its Todd" He said, "I really thought it was Scott."" Jan. 7, 2011:
"This has got to be one of the greatest treats to have stumbled in my life of internet surfing. My fiance yelled back, "are you kidding me, a support group for people named, Todd?" I said yeah, and they all get called Scott, too!
Okay, newbies here have to add Todd Nicknames from Childhood. One that comes to mind is,
" Todd a wad a toilet paper"" Dec. 18, 2010:

"When ever I meet another "Todd," I ask if they get called Scott. The answer is overwhelmingly yes. I'm a 1961 Todd. Interestingly, I ask Scott's if they get called Todd, they look at me in funny way, and say no. For the folks who use one "d," I say Todd one more d than god." Dec. 3, 2010:
"Im a Todd also. I get Scott too, I also sometimes get Tom. I have had teachers ask me if Todd is short for something. Im glad that its not a name you really hear everyday." Dec. 2, 2010:
"This is such a lark that I came across this and discovered vindication for the Scott thing. Years of people calling me Scott just after being introduced to them. I was about to get religious and peer into past lives to try and explain this. It must be the abrupt consonance sound?" Sep. 8, 2010:
"I too am a Todd who is frequently called Scott. I am glad to hear that it isn't just me, not sure what that phonemenon's about though. My good friend is named Scott so at times I thought it was because we are usually hanging out together but it has happened others times as well. We should start a support group...
At any rate I like our name, it's a strong one and not too common." Sep. 7, 2010:
"Hello fellow Toddster's. I haven't really had the Scott thing placed on me except for a few times when in my teens when meeting adults. I think although I was as clever and witty as a fox I hadn't matured into myself fully and didn't make an impact re first impressions which were set in their ways. But now in full adult Toddhood, my/our name sticks extremely well with whoever I meet in both the short and longterm.
Be true to and embrace your inner Todd." Aug. 17, 2010:
"I love the name Todd. My grandma post's maiden name was Todd and I plan on naming one of my baby girls Kathleen (something) Todd in remembrance." Aug. 6, 2010:
"I am a Todd. For some reason, it is not very popular at the moment. However, that is a good thing. It's good to have a unique name that is not WAY out there.
I can't believe that nobody has anything to say here but the freaky Todd/Scott naming thing. If you are not name Todd, you don't understand just how true this is. However, if you are thinking of naming your child Todd, it's really not a big deal. It just seems to come out of peoples mouths sometimes when they are thinking and talking too quickly." Aug. 3, 2010:
"I get the Scott thing too. I narrowed it down to the similar "ah" sound that ends with a similar "d" and "t" sounds. People go to Scott if they don't hear Todd clearly and their brains just go to the more common "Scott." I love my name. HATE it when someone spells it with one "D." Feels naked." May. 26, 2010:
"I was just called Scott by a co-worked that I've worked with for three years. He is well aware of my name, but still called me Scott in passing. I told him that 99% of the time since college(over the last 30 years) when I've been called the wrong name it was Scott. This has been from people that just have meet me or from those that have known me for a long time. I was curious so searched the net today and found this blog. It's good to see that I'm not the only one who has noticed this strange occurance, and that it is not just coincidence, but may actually be able to be explained medically." Nov. 9, 2009:
""Todd from Australia. I get Scott all the time too, even from a mate who has called me Scott on and off for 20 years! Another Todd I met in the USA said that the Harvard linguistics department did research on the Todd/Scott mix up and its got to do with a part of the brian where the words sound similar. Although I have never heard of other people's names being mixed up by the same name..."" Aug. 16, 2009:

"I was starting to believe that I was supposed to have been named Scott instead of Todd or that I was reincarnated and my former life I was a Scott. Just had to be. It has happened to me probably over a hundred times. So what is the answer to this phenomenon? Phonics? Some kind of brain trick thing? Even though I thought it would be logical that it happened to other people I did not think that my search would have found this to happen to other Todds." Jun. 15, 2009:
"My dad's name is Todd and everyone always called him Scott. I got my name (Scott) because it was his nickname." May. 29, 2009:
"Me too, it's a common mistake. I say,"Hello my name is Todd" and the next thing out of their mouth is "Hey Scott!" Happens at parties and in business, all the time. I have come to expect it. Seems to happen more often than being mistaken for Tom." Apr. 29, 2009:
"My son was born in 1978 - named Todd. My parents and friends have called him Scott on many occasions. I had no idea that this was such a common error. I would love to know why." Mar. 20, 2009:
"Me too! If anyone ever guesses my name wrong they guess Scott. All my life. It's been remarkably consistent. I am amazed to discover that it's not just me. What's up with this phenom??" Mar. 16, 2009:
"Interesting re: being called Scott. I don't recall getting that too often, but one of my students called me that just the other day! Then I found this page! Love my name." Oct. 7, 2008:

"My name is Todd, and I met someone else named Todd today. He said hi Todd, or is it Scott? Woah! How did you know? He knew this is a common phenomena as he experiences it, and knows another Todd who gets called Scott too. Very strange. But not all the Todds in the world are bonded forever by this mystery." Apr. 21, 2008:
"Holy crap! The entire Scott thing. Yep, I get it too." Apr. 21, 2008:
"Wow thats so unbelievable lol, i was just browsing this site so i decide to type my name in and to see that everyone else calls them scott to is crazy!, i got it mainly from teachers and my boss." Apr. 13, 2008:
"YES! SCOTT! I've gotten it since birth! Even my parents have called me scott, and I knew one Scott who'd been called Todd more than once!!!" Dec. 28, 2007:
"Hi my name is Todd, but I've never been called Scott...guess I broke the chain! Anyways, my friends call me Todd the Odd. Sometimes it gets annoying, but they're my buds, right? lol but everyone I just meet or teachers or something call me John! Don't ask me - I don't think they sound alike!" Dec. 13, 2007:
"WOW! my name is todd and ALL my teachers basically, call me scott all the time!" Dec. 10, 2007:
"Holy Smokes! My name is Todd and I do get called Scott more often than should be acceptable. I find it hilarious that other Todds have the same problem. Weird..." Oct. 13, 2007:
""Comment left Jul 24, 2007: "People have always called me Scott when they forget my name. Any other Todd's experince this?"
Yes people do call me Scott, though the ironic thing is I have a younger brother named Scott... go figure lol
- Tod (single D)" Oct. 8, 2007:
"Thats so funny! My husband is Todd (born in the 70s) and sooo many people call him Scott! Even funnier is we grew up with twins, Scott and Todd!" Sep. 16, 2007:
"People have always called me Scott when they forget my name. Any other Todd's experince this?" Jul. 24, 2007:
"My boyfriends name is Todd, everybody is usually confused if he spells it with one or two D's . .he is fun, hilarious, daring, outgoing, caring, lovable, perfect, eager, passionate" Mar. 12, 2007:
"My Name is TODD I,m 40 now but am told I look 25 to 27
I believe I'am at a slight advantage both personal and
professional because it is not as common people don't
prejudge me like a person with a more common name they
may not like the person tied to the more popular name.
P.S. I hope I made my view point clear." Jan. 28, 2007:
"I don't know anyone named Todd, but I like the name a lot :D Alot better than mine." Dec. 31, 2006:
"My name is Todd! I am the only one I know always at work or at school. Todd is such an awsome name that it works
for fake Todds whos real names may be earnest or bart. It's so cool that people use it to cover their own embarresment. A true Todd is hard to find, thats all I'll say." Dec. 27, 2006:
"Well, Todd is pretty rare and I like that aspect of it. I like that it means "fox." Although I have known its meaning for some time, I didn't know anything about the variation, Tod. People have recently asked me why there are two D's in the name. I didn't know. Supposedly Tod is a Scottish nickname for a wily or clever person." Dec. 25, 2006:
"Well.. my name is Todd. Only issue I've ever had is people always forget the last "d" in my name. Other than that, like it because it's different." Oct. 10, 2006:
"I have enjoyed it. I am usually the only "Todd" at work. It's common enough that it is usually spelled correctly but unique enough to not have to get confused with someone else. For some reason, people occasionally call me Scott or Troy. The "Troy" is interesting, since I have a brother named Troy, though some people that call me that are unaware." Mar. 20, 2006:

"My name is Todd and I must be completely honest, I hate it. Its not because people really make fun of it or anything, I just think its kinda a lame sounding name. It doesn't make me feel very confident to introduce myself, and I think that is very important in a name. Truthfully, I am angered that my parents named me Todd
Look up the George Carlin comedy skit on "people named Todd" and that is kind of how I feel.
The only problem is that I'm already 16 and in high school and everyone knows me by Todd. I wish I had created an alias earlier." May. 13, 2010:
"My name is Todd and I am called Scott by my wife's grandmother, all of my former bosses and my present boss call me scott. One time my boss, the university president, introduced me to the trustees as Scott. He looked puzzled, and said, "Did I just call you Scott?"
I replied, "Yes, I suppose this is a bad time to ask for a raise."
He said, "I just gave Scott one."
I think that there is a linguistics dissertation out there somewhere.
Another reason I am not fond of my name is that it does not age well. In fact, I don't know any 80 year old Todds. They probably go by Scott." Feb. 7, 2008:

"Love it! It means a "fox" QUICK AND CLEVER and that is exactly what my Todd is like" Feb. 24, 2021:
"My name is Todd and I don't like the name. I find the name gets used in movies and on tv whenever there is a "frat" guy or a character who is a snob or dumb. I have heard the name being made fun of and it bugs me." Jan. 11, 2019:
"My Brother is Scott and I'm Todd and I'm called Scott by perfect strangers all the time !! Lol I lost him in 1985 so it's pretty awesome to here his name still yet !" Oct. 26, 2018:
"1971 Todd here. As a teenager, I didn't really like the name. I thought it was too preppy and non-masculine, a la "Chad" or "Tad". Over time, though, I've come to terms with it and now enjoy how distinctive and fairly unique it is.
Yes! I too have been called Scott, albeit by one person. Each month, I would do business with him in our roles on a board of directors. He would greet me with "Hi Scott", then I would gently correct him. After a few months of this, I gave up trying and just smiled it away.
Glad to hear from all of you other Todds out there!" Sep. 19, 2018:
"Another Todd 1972.. I get called Scott ALL THE TIME.. F... Scott" Aug. 21, 2018:
"I am a Todd. I was born in 1976.
Growing up I never felt really confident about it. As a matter of fact I never really knew how to pronounce it myself.
Even when I introduce myself, and I am almost 40 years old, people think I'm saying, "Podd" or "Pat" or "Tai" or anything that isn't Todd.
Presently, I am going through a legal name change...I always felt like my mother just stuck me with a name she thought was cute at the moment. One of my brothers is a Jr.(named for our father). And the other two have biblical names.
Here I come in as just a Todd.
I tried to make myself like it a few years ago...Learning that it meant "Fox" was really cool and made it better for me.
But I rarely know anyone of note who has the name Todd. Nor do I see anyone being named Todd anymore.
Sometimes I think I would have had better self esteem growing up had a had a name that I was really proud of.
Moreover, my family was incredibly emotionally and physically abusive and I guess that is why I associate some negative qualities to Todd.
But recently I saw the movie "Easy A" starring Emma Stone and I loved that the hero in the film was a Todd. I halfway started to rethink my legal name change...
I guess I like Todd but I've never truly been in love with or proud to call myself Todd." Sep. 5, 2016:
"1946 Todd - As a kid, I hated the name because of all the cruel nicknames. However, as I grew up, I discovered that everybody's name get unkind nicknames. As for the Scott thing, my older brother would sometimes call me Scott, but I thought that it was because his son's name is Scott. After reading here, maybe that wasn't the case. I am called Tom more than Scott. I don't think I would choose Todd as a name for myself. My middle name is Walter and I don't care for the full name, but some of the nicknames I like, such as Wal or Wally." Jun. 18, 2016:
"I'm a 1966 Todd. Like a lot of Todds I've gotten the "Scott treatment"; and, like a lot of Todds, I've been conflicted about my name. There was a period during the 70's when I frequently questioned my mother about "why couldn't I have been named Steve?"- as in Col. Steve Austin. She said if I wanted to be a Steve I could; but, at that point I was too associated with the Todd brand. I love the George Carlin routine BTW!" Aug. 27, 2015:
"I have a son named Scott -1972 and another son named Todd 1976." Mar. 19, 2014:
"I am newer 1989 Todd. I get the Scott thing all the time. A former girlfriends mom would call me Scott randomly even though I knew her for 5 plus years. So glad to hear I am not alone on this thing. oh and yeah screw the one d Todd's out there, I have never met one that has not been an idiot. Anybody else out there with the nickname Toad?" Aug. 8, 2013:
"Todd December 1962 here. That Scott thing has followed me all my life! It's like my second name. It must be the hard stop at the end. Let me say how it gets worse - I work with a Scott. People call us both "Scott" when we are standing right beside each other. "I thought you wee Scott too!"" Dec. 6, 2012:
"1969 Todd here. I am called Scott probably 4 times a year. Mostly co-workers, business associates, and strangers, but not family or close friends. I first noticed this phenomenon around age 12. It even happened a few times when I lived in France, no joke. I can say with all sincerity, I would rather by a Todd than a Scott :)" Nov. 23, 2012:
"My name is Todd, and I'm a Scottaholic. My Friends, I am a 1962 Todd & have been researching this Scott phenom for about 30yrs. Whether or not you have a Brother/cousin/dog named Scott is NOT a factor, and have been taken out of the equation to appease those who think we are imagining what we KNOW. I've been told since I was a kid that I was making a big deal of being called the wrong name, "it happens to everybody" by my Mom & countless others. I might have bought into that if I was always called 'Tom' ...but I wasn't. Folks who have known me for DECADES, Family etc would call me the 'S' word & when corrected would often say "no I didn't Todd!". I actually got so tired of this no-win awkward conversation I just answered to 'it'. Then in business I found that people who I have never met in person called me Scott, even after YEARS of contact. I started approaching real 'Scotts' & was told they are NEVER called Todd. EVER. Once I passed a guy my age with 'Todd' on his jacket & politely said 'Hi Scott', he spun around w/rage in his eyes until I told him my name. He then hugged me & said no one believed him either. He also had me call his wife to confirm he wasn't 'nuts'. My Mom, God Bless Her, still does not believe me. When my only Son was born she asked why didn't I make him a 'Jr.', I laughed & told her I Love Him too much. My Wife works with the public & enjoys sharing my heartfelt research w/Todds & has over 80% agreement. We have also found 'newer' Todds (under 25) have less than 35% Scottattacks. This perplexes me, but then again most of my life people told me I was crazy! I'm [email protected], God Bless." Nov. 20, 2012:
"My oldest son is called Scott (21), and my youngest son is called Todd (8). I love both names and I more than often get the two names mixed up when i'm speaking to them. They both like thier names and are used to having to correct people as i'm not the only one who does this to them! There has to be some real reason behind this happening and i'm keen to find out...If anyone knows?? I also have Two Daughter's, Carli (18) and Tori (6) this problem happens with them too? maybe it's me with too many kids and a scrambled brain or it might be the fact that thier names both end in 'i'?? My middle son Owen (13) has none of thier problems, much to his relief." Aug. 12, 2012:
"I have been conducting an informal poll for at least 25 years, asking every Todd that I meet whether they are ever called Scott by mistake. I have found it to be universally true throughout the US! I don't buy the 'ah' and 'd' thing, but I have no better explanation. I'm a 1962 vintage Todd, BTW." Mar. 7, 2012:
"77 Todd here and my mother has callled me Hot Rod Todd ever scince I was a little boy and now my wife and friends do too. Most of my dune buddies call me H R T. never had the scott problem" Oct. 20, 2011:
"I too get Scott all the time - face to face, over the phone etc etc (From Australia)" Jul. 6, 2011:
"Boy here I thought I might have been a Scott in a past life ;-)
Once again there's no better truth than the empirical kind" Jul. 23, 2010:
"All my life i have been mistakenly called Scott from relatives, bosses and teachers. I love it when someone says when i've corrected them - oh, you look like a Scott. Oh really! I have even had to resort to a Hello My Name Is Tag when i was dating my wife cause her family couldn't get my name straight. I realized how common it was when I was at an event and there were 3 Todd's at the same table and I asked them if they've ever been called Scott. We all shared the same stories. I think the brain does tricks with the "ah" sound and the double t and double d.
Todd (aka Scott) from CT" Jul. 23, 2010:
"i was considering Todd as a baby name because it means Fox. Foxes are known for being clever,my husband happens to like foxes as animals go because of their cleverness. this whole todd/scott thing and mostly negative reaction to todd from todd nameholders, has me thinking again about it." Jun. 4, 2010:
"I'm a birth year 1965 Todd and yes I get the Scott thing all the time." Mar. 23, 2010:
"Yes, my name is Todd and I have been called Scott more than any other. Actually, my own mother called me Scott one time." Feb. 20, 2010:
"Too funny. Here I was researching my name and I come to find out that lots of Todds are being called Scott. Same thing happens to me, and has been for years!!" Feb. 10, 2010:
"Yah, I get the Scott thing too. It is hilarious that there is a Todd out there constantly being called Pat. Can't say that's ever happened to me. Might be time for a voice and diction class.
Anyway, I'm one of those Todds from the height of Todd popularity in the 60s.
I have always thought it was a boring, and kind of weird name.
But at least my dad didn't get his way. I would have been Tad. Dodged that bullet." Jan. 16, 2010:
"my name is Todd guess what i dont care that its unpopular I really could care less" Dec. 25, 2009:
"I hated the name Todd until I met my husband. He's a cop so I call him by his last name. I have never heard some one calling Scott for Todd. If I had of known that I may have considered nameing my son's middle name Scott." Dec. 7, 2009:
"toad, terd, odd todd, todd-o-loff, re-todd, never scott." Aug. 21, 2009:

"AH! It makes so much sense. My older brother is named Scott and I get called his name ALL the time, even by people who have no idea I even have a brother. I thought I was alone in this, it's good to know it's a common occurence."
