"Just SO popular now for both girls and boys unfortunately. Can see it slowly switching to becoming predominantly a girls name the way Hillary did. A few years ago would have been a great name. Too ubiquitous now and has become so AT THE SAME TIME as the name Roman (with an M), which is also one of the fastest rising boy names. Just so run of the mill now. RoHan, RoMan, RoWan, Roan. Yawn. When there?s so many lovely names please consider choosing a name that?s not so ripe for confusion. I?m a teacher and the influx of these names in the past 2/3 years makes my head hurt." "I like the name Rowan. In fact it is my name and i love it, however, i don't think it suits girls very sorry!
The only annoying thing is you can never find the name on a key ring.....but i am pretty sure i had my name before it got popular with me being born in the 90s" May. 15, 2014:
"Our Rowan is perfect and A BOY! He gets Row, Row Row, Rowie, Roley and Roleybear. Love him and his name. Never heard it for a girl other than Rowena. Glad his the only Rowan at his school." May. 7, 2014:

"I named my son Rowan Lee in October of 2010. I loved Roman because I wanted masculine, but daddy wouldn't go for it. My son was nameless for 2.5 days, but once Rowan came up it just felt right. Although I like Rome as a nickname. I found the rowan wood tree and learned that it meant beauty and inner strength." Mar. 5, 2013:
"My daughter is called Rowan and the amount of times I've been to the dr or called on the phone and they've asked about my 'son'. This is actually a really old family name for us as it was my great grandmothers middle name and my great, great grandmothers maiden name. I have heard of a few more Rowan's now in England as it seems to be growing in popularity for both girls and boys." Feb. 8, 2013:

"my daughter, 3 years, is named Rowan. everyone who i tell her name to thinks it's a beautiful name; it's not too uncommon, just enough. i got the name from the original movie 'The Wicker Man' - the little girl in that movie was named Rowan.
Rowan was also born in the month of the rowan tree according to celtic astrology." Jun. 18, 2011:
"Our daughter is named after the Mountain Ash or Rowan tree. It is unusual, especially for a girl, although we have met one other. I wanted something that nobody else would choose. Her middle name is Ray, so she has two boys names but it bothers her not a jot! She loves having such an unusual name here in England." May. 31, 2011:
"My son was Born Sept 11, 2009 He is Rowan Anthony." May. 7, 2011:
"My names Rowan and im a girl i have met only 2 people with the same name 1 a boy and 1 a girl some people think its more a boys name but it doesnt bother me !(:" Apr. 5, 2011:
"Yes this is my name.Very few people miss spell it.The correct way to say it is row-an.I never met a person who has the same name as mine." Mar. 31, 2011:
"MY name is Rowan. It means "red head" and is named after the rowan berry tree. specifically, the boys noame is meant to be spelled RoHan, rather than RoWan, the more feminine version. Both names are pronounced as they are read, and they can both apply to EACH sex.
My second name is Ciara, the irish spelling. It means "little black head". Both of my names are Irish! Some people tell me that Rowan is just a boys name. I get very frustrated, because my parents tried deliberatly to give me an unusual, nice sounding name that wasn't spelt difficultly and a name people woudn't question.
So every person who loves their name, but doesn't like their friends coming up to them and saying "Rowan is a boys name (or a girls name)".
Heads high, and tell everyone with the utmost dignity that Rowan is a name for both sexes and it is the name of a tree, which as far as you can tell has got as much masculine (or feminine) qualities as a dustbin!" Mar. 9, 2011:
"im expecting a baby boy in May and we have chosen the name Rowan." Feb. 11, 2011:
"My son's name is Rowan, and I have loved the name for years. It is unfortunately becoming rather common place, part of why I chose it was because I had never heard of a Rowan aside from Mr. Bean. :-) The name does suit him, like the rowan tree he isn't a huge kid, but sturdy anyway. :-) If I had to do it over I think I would have gone with the less common Roan spelling. Older people especially always think his name is Roland." Feb. 6, 2011:
"My wife and I are expecting a boy in April, and we are leaning toward Rowan. My wife loves the name, and I've been a little hesitant but the name is growing on me. I need to come up with a good middle name that flows nicely with Rowan." Feb. 3, 2011:
"Rowan is my name too! It's strong for a male and beautiful for a girl." Jan. 16, 2011:
"My 2 month old daughter's name is Rowan. I picked this spelling as being more feminine since RowEn looked too much like owen.
so far we get a really nice response to it =. many people haven't heard of it, but they think it is pretty, cute, and different ( in a good way).
Her middle name is very feminine, Miranda.
My family really hated it at first because they never heard of it, but now think it suits her perfectly." Jan. 2, 2011:
"My son's name is Rowan. The only negative comment I have is that people often ask "Roland?" and I have to say "Its like Owen with an R" It drives me crazy! But I think its an adorable little boy's name and a strong adult male's name." Dec. 27, 2010:
"My daughter's name is Rowan, she is 4 months old & I get compliments on it all the time! I occasionally have people ask me to spell it for them, but that is usually the "older" crowd because it is a name that is pretty unfamiliar to them." Dec. 23, 2010:
"We plan on naming our son either Rowan Elijah or Rowan August. Not sure which yet, I think we'll have to wait and see him to decide. Although I like the variation of "Roan". There were trees all over northern Idaho that I loved but couldn't figure out the name of until my husband came back from a trip & had met a man named Rowan & loved the name. I looked it up and the name of the tree is the Rowan Tree. I have been hooked ever since :)" Dec. 23, 2010:
"My name Rowen, Im a girl. My mom spelled it That way becuase she thought it would be differnent, and plus it is the correct way to spell it for a girl. It is so cool that Rowen/Rowan is becoming such a popular name. My moms grandmother gave her the idea for my name." Dec. 22, 2010:
"I named my son Rowan James. He was born in 2007. My mother is Irish and said this was a strong masculine name for a little boy, and I couldn't agree more! He likes the nickname 'Rowbot'." Dec. 5, 2010:
"We gave this name to our baby boy born in March, although we spelled it Roan. I know of a few girls spelling it Rowan, we thought Roan looked more masculine." Nov. 21, 2010:
"My 4 yr old sons name is Rowan Joshua, it suits him perfectly.. I was a little unsure at first as my wife had chosen the name but I could not see him with any other name now..I absolutely love his name. To the July 22nd author his nicknames are RowPatow, RowRow and Rojo Mojo.." Nov. 4, 2010:

"I'm a woman called Rowan and I love my name! Growin up there were mainly boys I knew called Rowan... no girls! But since growin up i've seen plenty of other people calling their daughters Rowan. "We're naming out daughter Rowen. We debated back and forth on the spelling and decided that Rowen looked a little more like a girl's name than Rowan." Aug. 18, 2010:
"I love the name Rowan for a boy! I think it's a masculine sounding name." Aug. 2, 2010:
"When my husband and I found out we were having another baby we immediately decided upon the names for both sexes. I found the name in a baby name book, which listed it as a unisex name. I jotted down all the names I liked and from there my husband chose from that list. Out of about 10 names, Rowan was a definitely "yes" for a boys name.
On January 30th, 2008 Rowan Liam Matthew was born. Liam was on my list that I loved but husband gave as a "maybe"- Matthew is my husband's name... so yes, Rowan has 2 middle names.
@ the person asking about pet names/nicknames for the name Rowan. We call him Ro (which is something he can grow with) but an affectionate one I gave him is Ro-Ro." Jul. 27, 2010:
"My older brother's first kid was just born today and he names him Rowan Robert. I'm not too fond of the middle name, but I love the name Rowan! It seems more boyish spelled with the -an, but spelled Rowen sounds more feminine to me. Does anyone have any pet names/nicknames for their Rowan?" Jul. 22, 2010:
"I'm about to have my first child in a few weeks and his name will be Rowan Atom, so i definitely think its better for a boy, the spelling Rowen is best for a girl. Either way i think its a really cute name!" Jul. 21, 2010:
"My adorable grandson is called Rowan...Rowan Jesse....he is a real little boy!! Has light brown hair and is a real little character...I love the names... Cape Town South Africa" Jun. 25, 2010:
"Wanted a name for my son that was nature related but would not be too weird. Some people still think it is a weird name (i'm from a small small town) and almost always ask me to repeat it, but all that matters is that my husband found it acceptable and agreed to it and now he actually likes it." May. 29, 2010:
"I love my son's name, Rowan. He is only 6 months old, but I hope he grows up to appreciate his name. I can see how it is gender-neutral, but my preference is for a boy as I tend to like the more gender obvious names, but it didn't stop me this time. Love the name!" May. 4, 2010:
"This is my daughters name and I always loved it. She's a beautiful blonde haired, blue eyed baby girl and it fits her well." Mar. 31, 2010:
"It really does not sound right as a girls name, but its nice as a boys name:)" Mar. 30, 2010:
"I first saw the name in a romance novel and it was the only name my fiance and I could agree on for our son- Rowan William John was born in December 2007 and even though he doesn't have red hair it suits him beautifully. I couldn't imagine him with any other name." Mar. 8, 2010:
"I love the name Rowan as well, and wanted it for our son, but my husband preferred another name. In the end we made a bargain that whoever the baby resembled more closely could pick his name. He came out with black hair and brown eyes like my husband so we went with my husband's name choice. A couple weeks later the black hair fell out and the jaundice cleared up and I have a blond haired very blue eyed baby that everyone says looks just like me. I definitely get to choose the next baby's name and girl or boy it will probably be a Rowan." Feb. 24, 2010:
"My late grandmother was named Rowe. She was supposed to be a boy, so her parents were going to name her Woodrowe, after the current President Wilson, but when she was a girl, they shortened it to Rowe. When I had my first child, regardless of the sex, he was going to be named after her. When we found out we were having a boy, we tinkered with it and came up with Rowan, so we could also salute my husband's heritage. I love his name!!" Feb. 20, 2010:
"My daughter is named Rowan! She's four. A friend of mine just had a baby, though, and named him Rowan as well. So I guess it's both." Feb. 19, 2010:
"My son's name is Rowan and this name to be used as a girls name just seems so masculine." Jan. 17, 2010:
"I think the name Rowan is is very beautiful for a girl. In the next 3-5 years when I'll be having children, I plan on naming my first girl Rowan, hopefully it's not too common :)" Jan. 8, 2010:
"My 18 month old son is called Rowan. We liked it because it was earthy and natural - I love that it's the name of a tree (and there are loads of them by my parents' home). It's easy to pronounce and spell but isn't too common.
As for it being a unisex name - I did know a girl at Brownies called Rowan when I was young but it wasn't an issue. The most famous Rowans are the Archbishop of Canterbury and Rowan Atkinson. So there!" Dec. 14, 2009:
"I think Rowan is a strong sounding male name. I love it!" Oct. 25, 2009:
"I named my daughter Rowan in 2007 but had chosen the name (for a girl only) back in 2001 when my baby turned out to be a boy; Killian. I am very disappointed to see how popular it's getting. In 2001 it wasn't even in the top 1000 on the Social Security list, last year it was in the 400s for a girl and 300s for a boy. I thought I was choosing a very original and beautiful name but then along came Brooke Shields and rained on my parade. Ah well, I still adore the name and never had another thought for my first daughter." Sep. 29, 2009:
"We named our baby boy ROWAN it is definately a strong boys name, it sounds a little masculine for a girl" Sep. 28, 2009:
"I originally heard the name when I was 12 years old on an old Japanese anime I watched as a kid. I fell in love with it then and 15 years later had a son, and of course I named him Rowan. Only after he was born, did my girlfriend tell me that it means "little red head". The best part about it is that he has a nice little head of red hair. Who would have known that an anime would have given me the perfect name for my perfect son. :)" Sep. 25, 2009:
"ive never known any girls named rowan, only knew a male at school named rowan(spelt rohan) personally i feel it to be a males name but can see it working both ways. we will be naming our boy rohan/rowan/roan" Sep. 19, 2009:
"I have always loved the name Rowan. I have always considered Rowan to be a girls name, but am starting to think it could suit a boy as well. I will mostlikely be naming my second child Rowan regardless of the baby's sex." Sep. 1, 2009:
"I've loved the name Rowan for years. My husband and I didn't find out the sex of our first child who was born in 2006. There was never a doubt that if we had a girl, she would be Rowan. We were blessed with Rowan's arrival 3 years ago, and her name fits her perfectly. We get so many comments about how beautiful and strong her name is." Aug. 15, 2009:
"Our newly born son is called Rowan (did toy with Valentine!), and its such a strong and unique name - there was no debate - we both love it and him to bits!" Aug. 7, 2009:
"Rowan is a family name and is the name I chose for my now 18 month old daughter. I think it's fine for either a boy or girl, but do prefer it for a girl. Rowan is truly a unisex name and always has been. I've done much research on this name and found out that before it was ever a given name it was used in literature as a female name. I think it is a beautiful, unique, and strong sounding name, and I just love it." Jul. 20, 2009:
"I love my name Rowan, I have got many compliments as to how unique it is etc...I'm a guy so cannot would like to think of it as a guys name.." Jul. 19, 2009:
"We are in UK and named our son Rowan (born Sept 08) and did a lot of research around the girly name dilemma. Overwhelmingly the UK feedback was it is a boys name and should remain as such. Our boy suits it and I now know of more boys born since named Rowan and no girls -yey!" May. 31, 2009:
"2 boys in my sons class with the name Rowan but very unusual all the same. No girls! Love it!. He's my tree growing big and strong." May. 29, 2009:
"My daughter is called Rowan. She is 21 years old and she loves her name. I always knew I would call my first daughter Rowan. People have always commented on it positively. She hopes as I do that it will not become common." May. 18, 2009:
"My first grandson was born May 4th and his name is Rowan. It's a lovely unusual name" May. 18, 2009:
"My last name is rowan actually(: I know some girl friends of mine with the name rowan i havent met a guy with the first name rowan yet. But either way rowan is a beautiful name for both girl or boy. Rowan is name seems to a name catcher. I agree with rowan being a boy or girls name. In all honesty I believe rowan will suit either of both(:" Apr. 25, 2009:
"Rowan is a boy's name. Leave it for the gentlemen, ladies." Apr. 23, 2009:

"I think Rowan is a great name for a boy. It sounds beautiful rolling of the tongue. It is an a good choice for an uncommon yet enduring boy's name." Mar. 12, 2009:
"my beautiful five week old son's name is rowan. my husband and i absolutely love it. we felt that it was a good, strong, irish sounding name. and, happily, he was born with red hair as well. :) i think it is a beautiful name for either boy or girl. it just suits my little rowan so well!" Mar. 12, 2009:
"My two-year-old bunny rabbit is named Rowan. It wasn't my first choice but my boyfriend at the time loved it. Now I wish I had'nt given him the name Rowan because I love it so much but I could never name my child after a rabbit! :P As well, I think it's a beautiful name for a girl or a boy." Feb. 18, 2009:
"We named our son born in February 2008, Rowan. At the time I only thought of it as a boys name and didn't realise it was unisex.
I don't mind, but my Mum is really paranoid that he will come across girls at school called Rowan and get upset - she keeps saying "at least he has a nice masculine middle name" - this annoys me because I think Rowan is a great name for a little boy - it suits him too and I can't think of him as anything else. I hope he does like it when he grows up." Jan. 19, 2009:
"My daughter was born on the 16th Dec 2008 and we named her Rowan. She also has the red hair to match her name. We knew she would as she takes after her dad. We love the name and she suits it so well. I think the name is perfect for boy or girl. Its down to personal choice. Either way, its a fab name." Jan. 7, 2009:
"I've been in love with name forever and always new I would have a little girl named Rowan. For years I had only heard it being used for girls- like in all the Anne Rice books and Wickerman. I know it's silly, but I could not name a boy Rowan because of Mr. Bean... 7 months ago I finally got my Rowan, red hair and all!!! Almost everyone thinks it is a beautiful name, I've gotten many compliments. But her grandfather can never seem to pronounce it correctly- it's always "Rolan". I just hope my daughter loves her name as much as I do one day." Dec. 28, 2008:
"My name is Brooke, and I named my daughter Rowan before I was aware of Ms. Shields doing the same. However, my Row is authentic in that she has the red hair! She fits her name extremely well, but I have to concur with everyone who claims that it is truly a male name...it just sort of has a feminine ring to it. It's beautiful either way, though." Nov. 23, 2008:
"A super name for a boy. With respect to names that are traditionally boy or girl names, we really need to think about how the child will feel if they are given a name that is traditionally used for the opposite sex. I know someone who named their daughter "Noah" to make a point that girls can have boy names if they choose to. The daughter, now 10 years old, is ashamed of her name and has carried this burden throughout her life, having to continually correct people, who when reading her name on a list, etc., assume she is boy. Life is already hard -- why put that burden on a kid?" Nov. 3, 2008:
"We named our son Rowan in 1996. We were just looking in baby books, and came across it and loved it!! It was the one name we agreed on. It is never mispronounced or spelled wrong. It still seems very unique to me. He looks like a Rowan too! It is cute for a girl too, but it does seem more boy to me. It's a great name, and I love it!!" Nov. 1, 2008:
"I love the name Rowan. I met a Rowan last year and fell in love with his name. It's unique and it's a very strong rugged name. I don't have a problem with people using it as a girl name. I'm not sure why people are choosing masculine names for their sweet girls, but I guess it sounds cool to have a man's name. I automatically assumed that Rowan was a boys name the first time I heard it. It's a strong masculine name and I love it. Also, Sharon Stone's son is named Roan, just another spelling of Rowan." Oct. 23, 2008:
"It's really absurd to me that people complain that girls "steal" all the good names. Are you so misogonistic that you think once a girl has had a certain named that it's somehow tainted with femininity. It just reenforces the fact that society places less value on the female. And it's YOUR problem if you can't deal with a girl having the same name as your uber-masculine sons.
My DAUGHTER is Rowan. And has been for a long time. It's a beautiful name for a girl."
