"This is my 9-year-old son's name! We call him Si for short and most everyone we know seems to like his name. Many recognize it as a Bible name and we first heard it from a pastor. I liked the sound of it right away. I was pregnant with my oldest son when I heard the name but we had already chosen Jedidiah for him so after talking to my husband about how much I liked the name he said if we had a second son we could name him Josiah. I was glad we had a second son because the name is so nice and so is the meaning!" Jan. 18, 2018:
"Im from the uk and my name is Josiah Joseph Wright. i absolutely love the name. I love how different and unique it is, through school alot of teachers and other kids had trouble pronouncing it but i didn't really mind because it brought laughs to everyone when the teachers tried to say it and came out with hilarious ways of saying my name. Since i was young i have always been known as Josi (Joh-see)if you understand how its said, its pronounced with a lower case o sound instead of oe for joe etc. i think its a great name and if your thinking of naming your child this i recommend highly." Jul. 7, 2014:
"My name is Josiah. I love my name and how unique it is, even if people have a hard time pronouncing it. It stands out for sure.
For my nickname, my parents picked Josh." Dec. 8, 2011:

Jan. 27, 2011:
"Josiah is a absolute prophetic name, any parent with Josiah knows this by just one look at their son even when they are sleeping their spirit is in motion being all that God made them to be. I pray into my Josiah all the time. He typifys his name - a true blessing" Nov. 30, 2010:
"My sister gave ne this name. I am think about naming my son this when he comes. I think its a cute name yet very old. Not too manyhave this name." Nov. 4, 2010:
"Our gregarious son, Josiah, is 19. We usually just call him Josiah, but often we use Siah and once in a while, Si. Pronounced with an s sound.
Josiah was the king that brought his people back to God. II Chronicles 34:29-33 (also II Kings 23). This has been our prayer for him since birth and and we already see this in his life. He has a passion for God and is gifted in teaching and spiritual encouragement." Oct. 16, 2010:
"MY 2 1/2 YEAR OLD IS NAMED JOSIAH. HE IS MY FIRST BORN AND HE IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! WHAT HE IS NOW ONLY LET'S ME KNOW THAT HE'LL GET GREATER AS HE GETS OLDER. I'M GLAD I CHOSE THIS NAME. IT FITS HIM PERFECTLY!" Oct. 14, 2010:
"My son is Josiah, he will be 18 in a few days. I hear people pronounce it both ways with an S or Z sound, either is okay. We don't run into many Josiah's and when we do they tend to be younger than my son, with rare occasion with find someone his age or older. I loved the name when I picked it and still do. We have had a few people call him Hoziah or Joshua which he finds annoying. We pronounce it with an S, but I get the whole Z thing. People tend to find his name unique just like him!" Aug. 26, 2010:
"my brother name is josiah.people say it wrong all the time." Jun. 17, 2010:
"i love this name i wanna name mah unborn child "josiah". which means fire of God. and plus its my favorite bible story." May. 24, 2010:
"My 2 yr old son's name is Josiah. I chose the name for its meaning "Jehovah heals" because I did not know if I would be able to have children. When my son was born, he had medical problems from which God healed him completely. Now his name is a testimony to God's healing power, since the doctors were not even sure he would live. I am so glad God gave me this name for my son." Apr. 23, 2010:
"My son Josiah will be born in 3 weeks time and I name him so because it is time for Spiritual reform, we need men after God's heart, God is about to save us again" Mar. 20, 2010:
"I love the name Josiah. I have full intentions on naming my son Josiah, that is if I have a boy this time. So far 3 girls. : ) I do not plan to call my son Joe or JoJo. I actually do not like that at all. I like Siah or Si for short. I will pronounce it as is should be "JO-Si-ah" there is no z in the name.
Any other suggestions on nicknames besides Jo???" Mar. 10, 2010:
"My son is 6 months old and we called him Josiah Nicholas. I am thinking of changing his name to Samuel though ( I know it is wierd to change a 6 mth old name) However I am very very worried that it will stigmatise him becasue it sounds too Christian. Although I am a Christian myself I don't want to make life hard for him. I don't like Joe as a name at all (no offence) and that wasn't the intention in naming him Josiah. We call him Jojo or Jobey for short." Jan. 29, 2010:
"I have a 10 month old that my husband and I decided to name Josiah. We were going to go with Caleb at first, but we wanted something more unique, but not strange and felt that Josiah would be a unique and strong name. I love the name. It suits him perfectly and everone that I have met think it is a great name and love that it isn't as common as other names." Sep. 23, 2009:
"My 3year old son is called Josiah, my husband always wanted that name, but I liked Noah aswell. It was when I was in theatre after having an c/s that my husband said "shall we call him Josiah?" and I said "yes!" I have no regrets we both really love the name and the meaning of it. The name really suits him, my little girl called him Siah when she was little and it has stuck. What does bug me is when the same people keep pronouncing his name as "Joe-siah"!" Sep. 9, 2009:
"I am 29weeks pregnant and expecting my 1st son (I have a little girl who's 3 named Juliana). I have picked to name my son Josiah because of the resemblance of my husbands fatehrs name, jose. Plus it goes very well with my daughters name. Juliana and Josiah" Aug. 18, 2009:
"I plan on naming my first boy Josiah...I love God and my favorite sport ever is soccer. For that reason, I plan on naming him Josiah (of 2nd Kings as described in many comments below) but I will call him Jozy for short (that is the name of a very promising American 19 year old soccer player)." Aug. 6, 2009:
"I just had a little boy who I named josiah. I was going to go with Jesiah because I thought Jessi for short would be nice but I seen in 2 kings in the bible the last faithful king was named josiah. I LOVED it! Plus the meaning meant Jehovah saves which meant even more to me!so I decided to call him JOJO for short. His whole name is Daniel josiah. I named his first name after his dad but since Daniel is also a biblical name and it means Jehovah will save I thought it went well together but he still goes my josiah! Such a beautiful and strong name! I love my jojo." Jul. 31, 2009:
"I named my son Josiah based on 2 Kings 23:25. My wife got pregnant just after we had taken an Old Testament class and it was pretty much the only name we could agree on! I had never heard of another person with the name. After he was born, I started hearing it a lot. In fact, we just moved and the kid two-doors down from us is named Josiah too! I liked the meaning, "the Lord heals," but there seems to be about 10 meanings depending where you look!" Jun. 3, 2009:
"When I named my now 8 yr old Josiah, I had never met a child with that name. Now I am hearing it more and more. I still love his name and it fits him perfectly. Siah or Jojo is is nickname." May. 26, 2009:
"My name is joshiah. It rarely shows up on a spell check when typing a document. Its a sweet name." May. 12, 2009:
"My name is Josiaha with the nick name of Joe or Joey and im 22 years old. I have a rare variant of it with an a at the end. I'm very proud of it due to it being very unique. From what my mom tells me my Grandpa named me after my great, great uncle. I used to get it pronounced wrong all the time growing up with Joshua, Joziah, and Joseph. As of today i currently have not meet anyone with the name Josiah or with how my name is spelled." May. 1, 2009:
"My brother is Josiah. When he was born (1992) there were very few around, but now our family knows four or five in our personal circles alone! He occasionally gets the "z" pronunciation, and sometimes Joshua. The weirdest one we've heard was Jemiah. 0.o" Mar. 25, 2009:
"We are expecting our first son, we have two girls now. And God gave me the name Josiah we love it. i get alot of people not familiar with the name but we still love it!" Mar. 16, 2009:
"My sons name is Josiah he was named after my great grandad i also wanted a un common name which this is also. I could never of imagined not calling him this and it is a well suited name for him. I have never yet come across another person with this name apart from my late grandad we always get the problem of people never pronouncing the name correctly he has been called joshua, joziah which really annoys me at times at it shows people don't take the time to pay any attention to it. Alot of his dads family call him siah for short i'm so glad i named him Josiah its such a beautiful name" Mar. 7, 2009:
"My nephew is named josiah and i think it is a beautiful name espcially as he is a stunning little boy...We call him Jiji for short Lol bt we have yet to experience the troubles with mis spelling as he is still so young...but I think it is a lovely name and if my brother hadn't got there first it would have been my son's name.:)" Nov. 24, 2008:
"My son, Josiah, is 13, and the mistakes are usually Joshua or Joziah. I'd never heard the name until I was pregnant and my husband said he'd always wanted to name a son "Josiah." It didn't sit right, so we went with "Ryne" instead. Two years later I was pregnant again, and he brought it up again. I realized how important it was to him, so I got up about midnight, and went and started writing the name with our last name -- I loved it! So our 2nd son is Josiah. In the last 13 years I've met a bunch of Josiah's, all in church circles." Oct. 5, 2008:
"My name is Josiah and I just have to say, I have yet to meet another Josiah outside of the internet. I truly is a unique name and although it will never be pronounced perfectly all the time, I love it." Sep. 11, 2008:
"I am currently pregnant with my first child I'm not sure the sex yet but I'm pretty sure it's a boy Josiah was the first name i chose and i love it. I wasnt sure at first what it meant or if it was even a name i was just going over versions of the name Joey,(my brother who passed away recently) and i got Josiah. As soon as the name came out of my mouth I felt it was right." Aug. 1, 2008:
"I gave birth to a boy 10 years ago that I could not raise myself. I had to put him up for adoption. At the end of my pregnancy I was frantically working with a Christian Adoption Agency to find the right parents for my child. I had a dream of what he would look like when he was born and on his birth card (in my dream) it read Josiah. Wow, I thought when I woke up, what a beautiful name. When he was finally born, I never saw him. I only gave him the name Josiah. He was immediatley rushed out of the room and me to my own room. It is by far the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Even harder was knowing that he didn't yet have a family to go to. The Christian Agency had their version of "foster families" until the children are placed. These families are gifts from god. Not the horror story foster families that you hear so much about. When it was time for my son to leave the hospital, the foster family came to get him. When they picked him up, they didnt ask for a name because so often they are not named until the family is chosen. I was adimate that his name be kept, even though I knew I really didn't have that right. When the family picked him up, my adoption worker said "she named him Josiah and we are calling him that for now. The woman started to cry. She had just miscarried a baby boy a few months earlier and his name...JOSIAH. The family prayed about it and were told by God that this was their baby. They kept my birthson and his name...JOSIAH! Our God is an Awesome God! He had it planned all along." Jul. 8, 2008:
"My husband and I have just named our newborn son Josiah. Like many people who have written here, we choose the name after reading the account of King Josiah in the bible. His whole name is Josiah David Grace. A lot to live up to but we know that God will impact his life and all those he meets." May. 30, 2008:
"My name is also Josiah. If I had a lifetime to count the times my name was mispronounced, it still would not be enough. I've been called "Joziah," "Hoziah," "Joshua," "Josh," and the list still goes on. But I do enjoy the fact that my name is rare to come by. It's unique, it makes me feel original, and I've only met one person in my life with the same name. (Who happened to be my cousin whom my aunt adopted from Africa)" May. 12, 2008:
"My name is Josiah. I've found that those who pronounce the "s" sound as a "z" sound are completely incapable of changing and will continue to pronounce the name incorrectly even when the discrepancy is pointed out. I've learned to deal with it. I can also relate to people wanting to name their children Josiah. It's flattering and makes me appreciate my name more than I already did. Also, I don't know of any of my peers ever saying "Josiah who?"" Apr. 16, 2008:
"I am naming my son Josiah. my family and friends love it, its different and has a wonderful meaning behind it," Mar. 11, 2008:
"My son's name is Josiah and I too have the same problem with folks pronouncing the "S" like a "z", this doesn't bother me too much. But what annoys me slightly is when they call him joshua, because this tells me they didn't even take the time to really look at his name. Of particular concern, is when this is done by hospital staff, because you would think they would be paying attention to detail." Feb. 12, 2008:
"Can not decide on Jack or Josiah. My name is John and there will be no JR." Jan. 21, 2008:
"I like it whether you say "Josiah" OR "Joziah"...what a beautiful kind-sounding-but-still-masculine-name!" Dec. 14, 2007:
"We named my son josiah and honestly I can't think of another name i love as much as his." Dec. 4, 2007:
"My son's name is Josiah and people who don't actually READ the name call him Joshua. And then you get the people who pronounce the "S" like a "Z" that gets annoying. I've even had someone call him Joseph! I taught my son to make sure to correct people when they say his name wrong." Nov. 17, 2007:
"I named my son Josiah, because it was a name that I have had not heard much and it had a wonderful meaning behind it. Now everywhere I turn everyone wants to name their boy's Josiah. I have had three people that I know basically steal the name for their children. But no one can seem to pronounce the name the correct way. How difficult could it be to say Josiah. I have heard everything from Isaiah to Hosiah! It crazy. I am glad that I named my son Josiah, it is a beautiful name indeed!" Jul. 10, 2007:
"I have the coolest friend named Josiah! Cause he really was the COOLEST person at regionals!! He made people feel good, when they were down. =D
I also have a cool little brother named Josiah!...JOSIAH IS A GREAT NAME!" Jul. 6, 2007:
"My 4th month old son was named Josiah because #1, I wanted a name that started with J like my first 2 children and #2 because I wanted a biblical name. Once I read the story of Josiah in the bible (2nd Kings) I knew this was the name for me precious son! I absolutely loove his name!" Jun. 28, 2007:
"Definitely in the runnings for my babies name if its a boy. My first son is Steven." Jun. 12, 2007:

"We wanted to name our son "Kauaokahaku" which means "servant of the Lord" in Hawaiian. Unfortunately, the word "Kaua" means servant and in Hawai'i, that is a very negative connotation. So, we ended up with "Ko'omana'o'i'o" which means "Pillar of Faith." Anyway, the name "Josiah" was already chosen...based on King Josiah from the bible...and we loved the name. It wasn't until he was about a month old that I realized I had never looked up the meaning for Josiah and the first one I saw said, "servant of the Lord." It confirmed to me that Josiah was the name he was supposed to have. The other meaning I've seen is "Jesus helps" which is another beautiful way to say it." Feb. 26, 2007:
"I don't know any Josiah's myself, but this year's "New Year's Baby" in my town (baby born closest to 12am on New Year's) goes to my church and is named that. I was just searching the name on Google because I heard a lady speaking at a conference once about how she feels that God is raising up Josiah's in the world and that it's a very special name. So it was really cool to read that one comment about how that mom and dad both thought of the name Josiah, seperately! Yay for all the Josiah's out there!" Jan. 16, 2007:
"My son is 9 months old. When I was pregnant i was thinking of naming him Josiah because I saw the name online and I liked it. My husband called me at work one day and said lets name our son Josiah. I asked him where he heard the name (it sounded old and rare). He told me he never heard the name before.. it just popped in his head and he really liked the name. Of course we thought this was a sign... we were both thinking of the same name which I read only once and he never heard before. Most people pronounce it Justsiah.... I mean really do you see the letter T anywhere in the spelling. To make a long story short we love the name." Jan. 12, 2007:
"We just found out tonite we are expecting our 3rd baby we have been praying for! Josiah has been ringing in our hearts for 2 months now. Love the name; in 2 Kings 22 it tells us that "he did what was right in the eyes of God, not turning aside." The name means to protect & uphold. Excited we are!" Nov. 21, 2006:
""Love it" My son often goes by "Siah". He's 21 I think he likes it. You know boys they never say much about their names." Nov. 13, 2006:
"Always spelled wrong, always pronounced wrong (in North America, anyways). Still, very unique. I've enjoyed it quite a bit." Oct. 2, 2006:
"I have been called everything from Joshua to Joziah to having my first name thought to be Joe and my last name Siah. However I must say I love my name. I have had people repeat my name that I've just met because they simply like the way it sounds." Aug. 27, 2006:

1 Negative Comment
"I hate the name Josiah. Since it has religious origins, there are many people who correlate this with lower intelligence. Moreover, nobody can ever pronounce my name right as it usually takes them 2-3 tries. And then we have the dreaded Doctors office, they never get my name right and usually end up pronouncing it like a Mexican name by using a soft J. Do your kid a favor and do not name him something so complicated it's going to bring undue hardship into his life." Apr. 20, 2015:

"My name is Josiah, in my experience it is difficult as no one hears your name correctly the first time. Or the second time. Which can be a great frustration that your kid will have forever. 2nd, the religious associations aren't fair to your child. I was raised Christian and it did't stick, so now I have the utmost uncomfortable situation of having to deal with being associated with the bible or god. It is a unique name. I have met 2 others. It is a hard name. It is a pretty name. Non-English speakers cannot understand this name. English speakers barely understand this name. Please don't discount the cumulative weight on a child that having a strange/difficult/unpronounceable name can create." Jan. 15, 2019:
"This is my first name. I really like it but no one could remember it in the business world, so I quit using it and went with my middle name" Jun. 19, 2018:
"I also believe that the real meaning of josiah coz that my name and it works out as stated and posted by many" Jul. 15, 2012:
"I am named Josiah. I was born in 1981. It was different growing up and I even to get called "Josh" to this day. However, I would not change my name for anything in the world. It defines me and my name sticks out. It is a part of me and I love it." Nov. 1, 2011:
"My son Josiah is 6yrs now, a precious unique spirit. He is sooooo sensitive to the things of God,... it's always in his eyes. he changes instantly whenever we are talking about spiritual things and he is also an enquirer, he questions to know the things of God. he has wisdom beyond his age, a true gift. Thank you God for His life. His full name is Josiah Enoch Adlai... check the meanings..." Aug. 4, 2011:
"This is way better than a brick & mortar etsbalsimhent." Jul. 23, 2011:
"My name is Josiah and i was born to be josiah.I've grown to love the name and it nuique for unique people.I always stand out unique in the mist of people,i've experience that right from school to my work place.I've had people calling or mis spelling my name but am not worried." Mar. 23, 2011:
"I feel convicted to name my unborn child Josiah after admiring his character in the Bible. In times like this we need children who are brave enough to go against the grain and make God's Word their ultimate guide. My family don't like the name and don't appreciate our reasons for choosing it and this is discouraging but in a way it may be an indication that this child may not always be popular because of his strength in standing for right in an upside down world" Dec. 29, 2010:
"My name is Josiah. It's becoming more popular. But people are prone to calling people named Josiah either Joseph or Joshua, especially when reading the name off a document. They see the prefix JOS and then the A and/or H and mentally go with the name they're most familiar with. It is rare that anyone actually pronounces the name correctly. So I mostly go by Joe." Oct. 24, 2010:
"My Josiah is 2 and a half and I too think the name fits him perfectly.....he is very intelligent...very happy...energetic....soooo caring sweet and compassionate....thank God for this angel....he's no trouble at all... even tempered...the whole z thing irritates me also. We call him Siah,JJ,or just J." | |
