"Gilbert is the Anglicised version of the Dutch name "Gysbert" which was derived from "Gieselbert". "Giesel" means "shining or glitttering" and "bert" means "promise" - hence the rather shortened meaning of a "pledge" given on this site. Gilbert actually means a lot more...
