"It?s the traditional spelling, unlike the modern adaptations which are now mostly for girls (Ashlea, Ashlee, Ashlee - to name a few)" Sep. 8, 2020:
"i'm a 21 year old guy named ashley and i absolutely love my name. The names unique on a man. Just by looking at the way ashley is spelt, its obvious it was originally a mans name. the -ley ending gives it away. thats why people started using variants of the name to make a male name look more girlie." Feb. 20, 2009:
"Ashley is a boys' name, originally. But not many parents know that, so they call their daughters Ashley. One girl I know is called Ashleigh, so her parents know better." Aug. 3, 2008:
"I'm a girl Ashley, but I know the name is originally a boy's name, and I'd love to meet a boy named Ashley!" Feb. 10, 2008:
"I took some heat at the beginning of school every year for being named Ashley. I always think of the Johnny Cash song, "A boy named Sue". Also the girls seem to like it. A+" Dec. 22, 2007:

"I?m Ashley 54 in 2021. There were no girl Ashley?s until I was around 19 or older. They didn?t exist.
I was named after Ashley Wilks from Gone With The Wind movie from 1939. There are recorded famous male Ashley?s going back to the 1800?s.
?Ash? is from the Tree, which in Norse and Germanic history is ?the symbol? for Male/Men, that is the tree of Yggdrasil. ?Ley? is also in mostly masculine names and is why the spelling was changed for girls.
So basically this is an ancient male name, of great power, related to the Norse Gods.
Having said that, I introduce myself and use the name ?Ash?, because many people today have been conditioned to see the name as female, and I tire of their reactions. For girls, Ashley was given to an actress on the You g and The Restless soap opera on tv. Everyone liked her, and that?s when girl Ashley babies began being named. So typically, girls are named after a soap opera, and men are awesomely named after the Norse God?s World Tree." Mar. 13, 2021:
"I am ok with this name but it irritates me that it is a girl name now and it is better for the original gender then to have morphed into a girl name now." Apr. 25, 2019:
"I'm a girl Ashley. The name is ok, but it's too popular." Sep. 25, 2010:
"My son's name is Ashley Carl. He hates it, but is the only name my husband liked for a boy because his grandpa called him that when he was little." Aug. 24, 2008:
"My name is Ashley and I'm a guy. I totally love it now, once I figured out how to deal with people going... Ain't that a girls name? But I think it's very original and special for a guy :) I'm glad it's my name." May. 15, 2007:
