  • "I was named by my mom who has Ukrainian heritage. Her mom was born in the Ukraine and spoke Russian. My name is pronounced Tahn-ya. I too have spent a lifetime experiencing similar situations of my name being pronounced in other ways. As a child and student it bothered me more then it does now. People who know me usually say it Tahn-ya but even they get confused with how to spell it. My mother said she chose this name because it wasn't common. I can see there are plenty of other Tanya's out there so at least it wasn't too uncommon. My mother told me that she almost named me Heather. I would have liked that too. I have worked in enough jobs that respecting each person and how they would like their name pronounced is more important than deciding between one being right and one wrong. I went to school with another girl who's name was Tanya. We pronounced our names the same. We only had 1 or 2 years of school together and that was in like 1st and 2nd grade. It was always Tanya H. or Tanya M. to keep be clear on who was being called... Personally I was glad that there weren't more as I always knew when I was being spoken to and didn't often hear my name when it wasn't meant for me. I plan to do more research after reading May 11, 2010 that said Tanya meant Truth... That so describes me... I've always had a thing about truth... so thanks for sharing." • "IT is interesting to see the different perspectives of having someone mispronounce how you prefer your name said. I was named after Tanya Tucker so hence I am TAN-ya (Tan rhyming with man). I rarely meet people who pronounce it correctly (I live in the mid-west). My question to those of you that don't like TAN-ya, how do you suggest we spell our name then? Just curious. And those that do say Tan-ya, well, I have never met anyone who pronounces it the same as I do, so cool :D" Oct. 14, 2011: Report as inappropriate

  • "My mom's name is tanya but a lot a people say it Wrong my mom was born 1980 and it kinda cool because her middle name is rae and my middle name is rae and my grandma middle name is rae to I'm shaylee rae. Tanya rae. Terri rae" Feb. 7, 2011: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Tanya, and I've always loved it. :) I've known one other Tanya in my life. We both pronounce it "tawnyuh." In my experience about half of the new people that I meet spell my name right when they hear it or pronounce it right when they read it. I do get a little worked up when people that know me purposefully mispronounce my name, but I just stopped responding to them when they called my name out incorrectly. I was named after a little girl that my mom knew when she lived in Germany for a while. It's very special to me. :)" Aug. 1, 2010: Report as inappropriate

  • "Hi my name's tanya as well.. well seems so funny this whole page is devoted 2 this name.. i'm russian (but live in england) and i'm quite surprised that the name is quite popular in america, even though i have met a few americans called tanya (pronounced tan -as in suntan- ya) yeah people always spell my name tania but i got used 2 it people always ask me how i want my name 2 be pronounced but i'm never sure.. i know that none of the pronunciations that they are choosing from are right - it's pronounced a bit differently in russian... i dont like tatiana though. thats my full name but it seems too formal and long for everyday life - plus NO ONE can pronounce it!" • "My name is Tanya said like it is spelt. My drama teacher always spealt my name Tanja and for like a whole year everybody called my Tan-Ja it was really annoying. My maths teacher called me Tonya for ages too but it seemed to get into her head that my name is spelt with an a after a boy in my class very loudly pointed it out to her. I've never met another Tanya and there isn't another Tanya in my school exept there used to be because my science teacher taught a Tanya. I also hate it when people spell my name with an i becauseits just spealt like it's said. i get mad at people who make mistakes with my name. I never make mistakes with theirs. I love my name though." Mar. 9, 2010: Report as inappropriate

  • "I have to comment on the last post. My name is Tanya (tahnya). One of my bosses has two sons, they both married Tanyas (tahnyas) Though I am not sure how they spell theirs. Though I consider the name relatively rare, it is funny that he had three in his least until he retired." Dec. 19, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "I used to hate my name, it was uncommon. Now I love it and the fact that it is a unique name. I pronounce my name with a long A, not Tan-ya. I am from the Midwest-rarely is my name mispronounced. Though about 20 years ago I had a boss that insisted my name was pronounced Tan-ya as that was how it was spelled. His name was Stephen (Steve) but I started calling him Steff-en as that was how his name was spelled. However while visiting the southern states, most pronounced my name Tan-ya. I think where one lives influences how the name will be pronounced. To all Tanyas; how you chose to pronounce your name is up to you, but respect others pronouncing Tanya different than you." Nov. 3, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Tanya ^-^. I do love my name it's very uncommon and has an awesome meaning. My parents call me Tan for short sometimes. I do get frustrated when people pronounce my name Tonya instead of Tan ya. I also find it irritating when they spell it with an i instead of a y or Tonya. I've got to a point where i don't want to answer if they call me by Tonya." Nov. 2, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "To those who pronouce Tanya, Tan-ya, in my opinion the pronounciation sounds whiny, especially if one turns the short a to long one, but still pronoucing it Tan-ya, only TAAAn-ya. This pronouciation also sounds like someone threating to physically punsih someone; "I'm gonna tan ya ". No Tahn-ya sounds much more sophisticated and I prefer this spelling to any of the many others. My parents named me Melanie, but were considering Tahn-ya. I hate my name and am considering changing it to Tanya." Sep. 26, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "Thanks for the September 20 comment. She is correct if Tanya was pronounced phonetically (Tan-ya) then so is Tonya (Tun-ya or even To-nya). Phonectically where would one get an 'a' sound from an 'o'. The name's origin is derived(its a nickname) from the russian/latin name Tatiana (Tah-tee-ahna), hence Tahn-ya. As for the Fairy Princess, that is not the meaning of the name. In Shakespeare's play Midsummer's Night Dream, Tatiana was Queen of Fairies. It is the feminine form of Tatius, a Roman Family Clan name. Also to the Tanya that wanted her name to be Caroline, after Caroline Kennedy..her second daughter's name is Tatiana. As for pronounciation of this name, I say Tahn-ya. That is my preference. I also agree with the post from Sept 20 that Tan-ya is the americanized pronounciation . Since Tanya is derived from Tatiana and Tatiana is pronounced with a short a, shouldn't Tanya be as well? But to each their own." Sep. 21, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "To the last post saying Tanya (Tahn-ya) should be spelled Tonya, phonetically that be Tun-ya. I spell my name correctly and pronounce it correctly, yours is an uncommon pronouciation...americanized. When I was young many people mispronouced my name, I was constantly correcting people. The many people with this name must have been doing the same, as rarely I am called Tan-ya. The only time it happens is with telemarketers from the South. Also when I was young I never met anyone with my name, now I am meeting women my age with my name (spelled and pronounced the same way) often. All I can ask is where were they in school. Also to those out there with this unique name, pronouncing it Tan-ya, I respect your right to say the name as you like. In fact if I meet a Tanya-I will always ask their preference-if I only see their name on paper or a name tag. I do the same for other names with duel pronounciations, like Andrea, Ahn-drea or Ann-drea? Tan-ya(s) should also for those who pronounce the name Tahn-ya. Not tell us to spell it differently. That September 12, 2009 was just rude, show some respect." Sep. 20, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "Hi, I'm Tanya (with a short 'a'- not pronounced like Tonya). Yes, it's very frustrating to live life constantly correcting people on the pronunciation of your name, therefore I wish there was a way to get the word out ... if you want your child to be called Tonya, please spell it that way. If you prefer Tanya (Tan-ya) stick to this spelling and the whole problem can be solved. Nothing could be easier than Tan-ya, pronounced exactly like it's spelled! Luckily, I do really like my name--number one, it has a soft, feminine sound to it, and upon meeting me for the first time, people often tell me it's beautiful, so that's very appreciated. Number two, it's unique, which fits me--I'm very creative and like being a little different. This name seems to be much more common in the southern part of the U.S., why, I'm not sure. It is Russian, and I've always read that the meaning is "Fairy Princess" -- it exudes soft, flowing, light, dreamy, and lovely! :-)" Sep. 12, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "This being My Name... Everyone has their own way to pronounce it.. I for one pronounce it Tawh-nnnn-ya.... With the N Emphasized as well.. With the tiny curly at the top... I find it is a unique name, as whilst I was at school there was only me in the whole school with my name :) I think its cheeky to say that someones name is ugly and find the person who has said this very inapproiate." • "I'm a Tanya (Tan as in suntan.) My namesake is also Tanya Tucker. My mom was/is a big fan. Thank the Lord she got her way. My father wanted to name me Charmaine(no offense to the Charmaines out there). I used to hate my name. Everyone always pronouncing it Tawn-ya. Now after 25+ years I'm actually proud of my name as I have come to realize how rare and unique it is. I've only met one other Tanya and it was at a friend's Christmas party. I kept on hearing "Tanya Lynne stop that!" "Tanya Lynne don't do that!" Freaked me out because it was my first AND middle name they were using and I didn't know what the heck I was doing wrong. Turned out there was a little girl with the same name at the party." Oct. 22, 2008: Report as inappropriate

  • "YAY I'm Tanya and it's great to see so many people with the same name! Esp. because I'm Asian and not many people where I come from (Singapore) have even heard of the name. The thing that gets me is the pronunciation: is the 'Tan' like 'going out in the sun and getting a TAN', or is it more like 'TAHn'? Sometimes when people say it both ways the problem feels more like an American or English accent problem. My mum says TAN-ya, but TAHn-ya sounds more sophisticated to me. Is it really up to me to decide which I like better or is there really a correct pronunciation to it? (anyone's answers to me can be emailed to" Jul. 22, 2008: Report as inappropriate

Lots of people get it wrong and I'm really impressed when somebody gets it right on the first try. Here's an actual phone conversation I had at work: "Thanks for calling, this is Tanya." "Tonya?" "No, it's Tanya." (I smile.) "Tammy?" "Tanya." Long pause.... "Is? Is it like.... Danielle?" I'd rather have been a Jane or a Sharon or something." Apr. 16, 2011: Report as inappropriate

  • "Everyone is wrong about this. I am Tanya. Pronounced tahn-ya If it was spelled Tonya people pronounce it "tone- ya" that is obnoxious. I somehow get that. Or like tan (like the shade of beige) ya. . That is bad too. I was born in 79 so Tonya Harding scandal came out when I was in highschool. It ruined me. All I could say was she spells it different!!! Everyone called me tonya Harding. I still hate my name. I don't recommend it. My sister got tara which I would so prefer. Although she gets enough pronunciation issues. She answers to anything. For me though having the same name as a villain on ice is horrible. It has died down but the wound it deep. For me and for Nancy Kerrigan!" Dec. 25, 2010: Report as inappropriate
