"My name is Va Lynda Ann. I was teased terribly as a child about my name. Most of my classmates insinuated that I was African American, I'm Caucasian. I was very petite, blonde and have green eyes. However, the name has always brought me strength and a uniqueness that I love! I have never met anyone with my name, but have been called by many other names. Melinda, Belinda, Zalinda, Ralinda. My nicknames growing up were Vanilla, Val, Vab, and Bubbles. I couldn't be happier with my name and love having a name that starts with a "V" for Valentine. Hello out there to all those who are blessed with such a majestic and unique name!" Oct. 28, 2014:

"My middle name is Valinda and I gave it to my first daughter as her first name because I have always loved the name.
My name came from a comic strip in the newspaper in southern California in the early 50's. From what my mother told me the character was named Valinda Lee and was a Brenda Starr type character - the strip just didn't stay around as long.
I was teased about my name as a child more than my daughter was. Valinda - Vanilla lead to Chocolate, it was the 60's. Since it was my middle name I did not really suffer from mis-spelling issues. My daughter's most common experience was 'Velinda'.
Her husband has a client who is also a writer for CSI and as a birthday surprise had Valinda used in a CSI script. My daughter was able to chose who Valinda would be and chose to be a victim in the show. The actress playing the female lead that episode could NOT remember Valinda so she shortened it to 'Val' but the 'phone records' shown had Valinda spelled out." Sep. 22, 2011:

"My name is Valinda too. I enjoyed the stories about my name. So much of what everyone said sounded very! very! familiar. I too am frequently referred to as Belinda, Melinda, and Valerie or Val. I once had a client who decided to name their child after me and called her Belinda. Oh well! I guess it's the thought that counts
The only thing I know about where my name came from was that it came from the obituary colume of "The Canton Repository." Valentine is a very old family name. My Father's first name is Val. He was named after his Grandfather, Valentine. My Mother decided to name my sister and I after our Father. My sister is named Valerie. They were looking for a name with Val in it for me, and found Valinda in the Obituary colume of our local newspaper.
Just in case your curious, the obituary was for the girl's Father. She was listed as survivor. I met her about a decade ago, and asked her were her name came from. She said her Father, who was an English Teacher at a local High School, made the name up after seeing the play "Johnny Belinda."" Jun. 27, 2011:

Her sister lived in CA. near Valinda,CA. I don't know if that's where she got it from. I'm not sure I always liked it as a child as my initials were V.W.-always last and I thought it strange no one else had my name. "Hi all, as you all my name is "Valinda" and yes everyone misspells it. I tell them "V" as in Victory. Did some research years ago and found the name is a form of "Val" meaning strong, but with a female suffix "inda".. I was born in "57" in Long Beach, Ca. to a Navy couple who lived in Los Angelos County at the time. . Also had a great aunt who was also named Valinda. The first Valinda I met is when I saw a restaurant by that name. I had to stop and meet this other Valinda who sat in a booth with a broken leg. Met a few since then." Nov. 24, 2013:

"I AM VALINDA AND MY DAD SAID MY NAME AS IF IT WAS WRITTEN "VA LYNN DA" WITH THE LYNN AS THE MAIN SOUND OF THE NAME. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A POPULAR FRENCH ACTRESS IN 1951, THE YEAR I WAS BORN. DAD SEEMED TO GIVE MY NAME A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PRONUNCIATION THAN ANYONE ELSE NAMED VALINDA OR THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD OF. IT IS USUALLY PRONOUNCED WRONG. NOT ONE PERSON HAS EVER SAID IT LIKE MY DAD AND I WOULD THINK HE WOULD KNOW WHAT HE NAMED ME. I WAS TOLD BY A WOMAN FROM BRAZIL THAT IT WAS A PORTUGUESE AND POSSIBLY FRENCH NAME. THAT DID NOT MAKE SENSE TO ME. IN MEXICO I WAS CALLED BELINDA AND THAT WAS TERRIBLE AS NONE OF THEM COULD SAY THE "V" SOUND ANY WAY., BUT WERE WONDERFUL PEOPLE. AS I HAVE ALREADY SAID, I HAVE NEVER MET ANYONE WITH THE SAME NAME THAT SOUNDS LIKE MINE, EVEN IF IT IS SPELLED THE SAME." Feb. 19, 2013:

"Valentine is a very old family name. My father's was named Val after my great grandpa who was named Valentine. My mother wanted to name my sister and I after our father. My sister was named Valerie, but they couldn't decide on a name to give me.
They noticed in the Obituary Column of The Canton Repository (our local newspaper) an English teacher had died and his four year old daughter, Valinda, was listed as a survivor. This occurred just before my birth in 1962. So I was named Valinda after a girl I had yet to meet.
Thirty years or so would pass before I would happen to meet her. I had to ask her where she got her name from. She told me her father made it up after seeing the play, "Johnny Belinda."
Oh! I too get called a variety of different names-Melinda, Belinda, and Valerie. Someone I knew decided to name their child after me and called her Belinda. Well, I guess it's the thought that counts." Apr. 14, 2012:

I was born one day after my grandmother (obviously years later) and she had the privilage to name me. She heard my name from Siembamba (a children's radio program). I don't mind people calling me Belinda, Melinda or Vanilla, but I take care in correcting them, so that they know my real name. I think it is very special and unique. I get a lot of compliments on my name and love it!!" Sep. 15, 2011:
"My name is Valinda also. To all of the Valinda's, I understand being called Melinda, Belinda, Val, etc.. The person that named me passed away when I after I was born. My mom had a cousin that was pregnant at the same time. When she heard the name, she decided to name her daughter Valinda. I was born first so my mom named me Valinda. Needless to say she was very upset. I use to hate my name. But as I got older and realized how unique it was I began to love it. As as matter of fact I am celebrating my birthday on this very day, July 12." Jul. 11, 2011:

Or they remember it begins with a V so they call me Valerie or Vanessa or Vatilda or Vidalia or Velveeta or anything that begins with a V. I've never met anyone named Valinda. My nick-name is Val, which is easier for people to pronounce, but when people want to call me by me full name, they usually call me Valerie.......so, I have to explain my name and its spelling quite a lot. Don't mind most of the time, but there are times when I DON'T like being called "Valerie". It's 6 of one, half-dozen of the other.....oh well." Jan. 24, 2010:
