"My Dad named me I am 52. He pronounce it Shel_ah, it is spelled Shelia on my birth certificate. I dealt with many saying and changing the spelling of my name as Sheila. At one Pont I said maybe the nurse write my name down wrong after birth and my parents didn't catch it. The may have wrote it down the way my Dad prounced it when he gave them my name for recrecord at birth. Even in High School there we 3other with similar names 2spelled there names Sheila and I And another spelled out names Shelia and we all were called She_la. It doenst matter I spell my name as it appears on my birth certificate and when my father says my name it sound foreign origin and sofisticated. We are a different set of people "Shelia/Sheila". Be honored !to have either one of the names!!!😉😇😑😃" Jan. 28, 2017:
"I am in retail and have sold the Shelia's wooden houses in the past. Yet people constantly spell it Sheila's on the very same page. The former spelling is on the products famous green box! I would not think the 'i' would be silent, if I was making a guess." Apr. 24, 2015:
"My name is Shelia...pronounced Sheeela...just the way it is meant to. I love being the only Shelia around! Its great. Yes, my parents spelled it correctly. Hardly anyone ever mispronounces it." Dec. 10, 2014:
"I thought I was the only one that had to deal with this issue. My name is spelled Shelia, it's pronounced "sha lee ya" (only way I could think to spell it so you'd know what I'm talking bout. I get called Sheila all the time, even by people in my family. I tend not to get upset as long as they spell it correctly." Jul. 9, 2014:
"My English teachers only called me by way name is spelled, Shel-lee-a. The school's used to think I was spelling it wrong and changed the (il) around, used to upset my mom. My grandma named me Shelia Marie, not Sheila. I do not correct most when they say Sheila, because I don't want to make them feel bad, however if I'm asked I do state the correct pronunciation for them. Half my family call me Shelia the others call me Sheila, lol. So if family has issues with it, guess what do I expect from rest of society lol!" Apr. 24, 2013:
"OMG and I thought my I was the only one going through this!! My name is Shelia. I prefer it be pronounced She-Lee-A because that is my name. Not Sheila!!!" Jan. 18, 2013:
"My name is Shelia pronounced like Sheila. Pepole often spell it incorrectly because of the way it sounds." Oct. 27, 2008:
"Great name! There are not many of us out here. The name gets misspelled and mispronounced a lot, but I really like my name. I also prefer this spelling over the more common, Sheila. To me Shelia just looks more right." Dec. 28, 2007:
"It's my name. First, I spell it Sheila, which is a variation. I don't have problems with people mispronouncing it as long as they spell it right - if they spell is Shelia, they pronounce it Shell -ee - ah. My father gave me the name as it could not be nicknamed." Nov. 26, 2007:
"My daughter's name is Shelia. No one pronounces it correctly at first. I have to remind them of the pronounciation quite a lot until they get it right. Shelia's name is also quite a good safety feature. If someone talks to her but says her name incorrectly, I know they don't really know her!" Nov. 14, 2007:
"I am a 51 year old Shelia who up until the age of 21 allowed people to call me Sheila. My name is pronounced like (Shel-Ya) and when I tell people that they think that I have made it up. Some of my family refuse to acknowledge that I did not change my name and the still say Sheila. I ignore them and continue to be known as "Shelia"." Apr. 4, 2006:

"So, you folks that go by Shelia....did your parents mispell Sheila? Because thats what I think happened." Jun. 1, 2012:
"I think it is unfortunate that parents choose this spelling assuming it is pronounced the same way as Sheila, but clearly it is not. Essentially they've made a huge spelling error that their child will have to live with for their entire lives. Language has basic rules of pronunciation. Clearly this name is pronounced either She-lee-a or Shel-ya, NOT the Sheila!" Jul. 5, 2011:

"People should not use this spelling if they want their daughter to be called "She-la". That pronunciation should be spelled Sheila. I really believe many 'Shelia's are spelled that way in error, but in the cases where people intentionally choose that spelling you should know that you're naming your child "Sha-Lee-ah". I used to work with a woman named 'Adrain' who pronounced her name "A-dree-an", but she told me her mother misspelled it on her birth certificate so she had to go through life with her name spelled wrong." Apr. 24, 2017:
"I get irked that companies often incorrectly spell my name Shelia (it's Sheila). I don't mind two-syllable misspellings but it boggles the mind how "Shelia" even comes to mind as their default choice of being wrong! I like the name Shelia pronounced Shelya though..." Oct. 14, 2016:
"I'm a receptionist, in charge of updating our employee list at the first of each month. August is almost here, and I noticed we have a new person named "Sheila" or "Shelia", which I have seen listed on two different documents. I have sent her an e-mail to ask which one is correct. To me, "Sheila" would be pronounced "SHEE-luh", and "Shelia" may be pronounced "shu-LY-uh", because I am following the letters phonetically on paper and in my brain. I think it's mean for parents to give their children names that will cause them so much trouble. I guess I am one of those parents, because I named my daughter "Virginia", but we have always called her "Ginny". EVERYONE (like at Starbucks, where they write the customer's name on the cup) calls her JENNY, even after she has clearly pronounced it like "Jinny" (spelled Ginny) - see the "gin" in the middle of her name? GIN. Like the alcohol. I think I'll have a martini now. ;)" Jul. 28, 2016:
"My name is spelled Shelia and I've always pronounced it she-la but people say she-le-ah it makes me sad people refuse to believe that the i
Is silent in this spelling." Apr. 15, 2016:
"My name is spelt Sheliagh - I understand that it is an Irish name. Hardly anyone spells it correctly. I sometimes wish I had been given my middle name which is Esmee!" Aug. 27, 2015:
"My name is spelled SHELIAH, and I haven't found many that spell it that way..I am called Sheila all the time ..Where my Mother ever came up with that spelling is beyond me..i was born in 1950 ..." Feb. 9, 2015:
"My name is spelled Sheila (shee-lah), but I get the "other" spelling of Shelia all the time. I always make the correction because they really are two different names. The catch is when my Spanish family members pronounce my name, its (shay-luh) with the emphasis on the first syllable." Aug. 22, 2014:
"I am a 55 year old Shelia who was taught in school to spell my name Sheila which I did for many, many years. But on my birth cetificate it is Shelia. Even my Mom asked me why I now spell my name Shelia and I told her because that is how it is on my birth certificate. She said "well, they must have made a mistake". How could you not notice the spelling of your childs name? but I thank the nurse or however spelled it that way because it is unique! I do he trouble with people spelling it correctly even when I tell them how to spell it. I am still not sure how to pronouce it. Most of the time I say She-lee-ah?" Jan. 28, 2013:
"My name is Shelia. My husband put that spelling into his cell phone and it pronounced it shay-lee-a. My husband yelled at the phone and said,"No, stupid, Shelia". I told him the phone was only going by the way it was spelled." Mar. 24, 2008:
