  • "On mine is spelled differently it is Rochela pronounced as row_shell_la" Mar. 30, 2017: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Roschele. Most of the people I came across pronounced my name as, "Ruh-shelle", some even "Row-chelle", but my name should be pronounced as "Ross-chelle". I'm from south africa btw. I love my name, because its quite uncommon. I love the fact that I always have to correct people when pronouncing and spelling my name, it makes my name seem quite rare and uncommon. I also feel that I have a quite unique version of the name, many people spell it as rochelle, whereas mine has a bit of a twist. I'm so glad my parents decided on this name. I've never heard of any other roschele's name being spelt like mine. I just love its uniqueness...<3" Aug. 22, 2014: Report as inappropriate

  • "I have found that alot of people say RAH shell instead of ROW shell, seems odd to me since the spelling is Rochelle and not Rachelle, but i pronounce my name RAH shell, just because i dont like the way people say ROW shell. hah!" Jan. 10, 2014: Report as inappropriate

  • "I named my daughter Rochelle because it is a beautiful and unusual name." Mar. 18, 2013: Report as inappropriate

  • "Rochelle is my name too! I've always liked it because it is strong but pretty and just a little bit different. The emphasis is definitely on the 'chelle' when pronounced. Strangely many people are confused about how to pronounce it which always puzzled me because it is so similar to 'Michelle' which most people have come across before. I find it is often misheard as 'Michelle' or 'Rachel' or 'Rachelle'. My mum never encouraged nick names while I was growing up, she didn't like 'Shelly' in particular which i definitely picked up on. However some nicknames I have had include Ferrero Rocher ( the chocolate) Roch ( like Rosh not Roach, never been called Roach), Rocky, Ro-Ro also Rochelle Rochelle (Seinfeld reference). Little kids call me Chelle and I don't mind that but i always imagine it spelt Chelle or Chel never Shell, I really don't like it spelt with an 'S'. I've heard of a few other Rochelle's and went to school with a Richelle but I don't find it a very common name here in Australia. I like that it means 'little rock', something which has inherent strength." Oct. 25, 2012: Report as inappropriate

  • "My middle name is Rochelle and my grade school bestie and sister nicknamed me Roach hotel...smh...the roach part stuck and now my sister had taught it to my nephew lol...it's not so bad coming from him. Anyways I just met a guy at work named Rochell...we're currently having a debate whether it's a male or female name lol" Feb. 16, 2012: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Rochelle and I'm also from Canada! I have met one girl with the same name as me, and two girls named Rachelle who pronounce it the same way. My middle name is Suzzanne. I like having so many double letters in my name, lol! I really love my name, and I like it that most of my friends call me "Chelle" without even really thinking about it. The only real problem is that people want to spell it like "Shell" and that annoys me! And of course I have some annoying friends who constantly call me Rachel and Michelle." • "It is my name and as I have gotten older (I'm 42 now) I have grown to appreciate it. I especially love that the mother on "Everybody Hates Chris" is named Rochelle. Still, I think it is great to have a name that is very rare and pretty." Oct. 4, 2010: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Rochelle Janee' and I love my name! I have had many many many nicknames bc of it but none bothered me too bad. I have two older brothers and they called me roach, so when the kids at school thought they could give me a hard time and call me roach I would just smile and say that's what my brothers call me. I am almost 30 and I am still receiving various nicknames. At work they want to call me Ro because it's easier but I tell them no, Rochelle is NOT hard to say. Little kids call me Chelle and I love it! But if you are an adult I would like to be called my full name. My husband got on a kick of calling me Rose and I really didn't like that. Alot of people assume I'm black, but I'm a white girl. I love my name because I think it makes me stronger and have more patients because I have to say my name very clear and anymore I go ahead and spell it before they even ask." • "My name is Rochelle. I love my name and wouldn't change it. Though I get frustrated when I'm called Rachel, Michelle, or Rachelle. I have nicknames like Chelle/Shell, Ro, Ro-Ro, Rocky, Chelle-Belle, and Shelley (but I hate being called Shelley). It's a beautiful name and I never had trouble spelling it, but it's still unique." • "My name is Rochelle, when i was younger i did not like my name, because of the kids teasing me about my name, but now that i am older i learned to love it because it is so unique. Was an uncommon name and I had my share of nicknames but I find the nicknames to be quite cool, with the exception of Rocky. Most people call me Rochelle or Ro or Shell's Bell's." • "My name is Rochelle as well and I am from Sydney Australia. My family calls me 'Che-Che or Chelle' When I was in Primary School I always copped having the Shell Petrol slogan said to my face 'Go Well Go Shell'. I got Roach too but once I started Highschool everyone commented how much they loved my name. I got the nickname 'Ro' or Chelley. Now I am 30yrs old and almost everyone I am introduced to always comments on how beautiful my name is. So all the 'Rochelle's' out there. Be proud of your name." • "I adore my name. Iım 24 and from Australia, and until just two years ago had never encountered another Rochelle. Throughout school it was unique and different, and yet not so extremely outrageous to be ridiculed by it. I do however dislike the pronunciation of ıROW-chelleı with a hardened emphasis on the start. Rather, I pronounce it as it you are sounding out the letter ıRı followed by the ıchelleı. Those closest to me call me Chelle, so I imagine because of this I have steered clear of highlighting the ıRoı and have for most part avoided the mispronunciation (at least for me) and nicknames such as Rocky and Roach. Although often called Michelle or Rachel by new people, nobody tends to get it wrong the second time around, once corrected. Plus, I love the femininity and prettiness of the name to never want to change it." Dec. 19, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Rochelle, like alot of the Rochelles on here people often mispronouce it and say 'Row-chelle' or simply just mistaken the R for a M. Most people actually know me by Shelly Belly, Shellz,Roch, Ferrero Rocher(yh i kno, lol my crazy aunts call me that)and just simply Shelly. I also love the meaning of it 'little rock' as it describes me as i am small but very strong am also a bit mad too lol. Ive met quite a few Rochs that are aswell." But the funny thing is how in the U.S., people ask me if it's a French name, and when i'm in France, people ask me where my name comes from. Even though there is a city in France called La Rochelle, no one uses Rochelle as a first name. They actually think my name is Rachel, and I'm just trying to make it sound French by pronouncing it Rochelle!" Feb. 13, 2009: Report as inappropriate

  • "I live on the West Coast, but grew up in North East Texas on the border of Louisiana. Louisiana was settled by the French, so having a French name was great. Most people asked me why I wasn't black because "Rochelle is a black name" I was told. (I'm half caucasian and half mexican.) What's funny about that is my mom was watching a christian program and named me after a black woman that was called to the stage. When I was younger I didn't like my name, but over time have only heard good things about my name. People mostly say they have never heard of "Rochelle" before and that it is a beautiful name. People on the West Coast need to learn more geography because New Rochelle of New York is on the map. And come to find out there are five towns in America that are named Rochelle. I hope to visit La Rochelle in France and all the Rochelle's in the U.S. I LOVE my name and it is very much a part of who I am. I wouldn't change it for the world. I have read several meanings of the name from the French version "little Rock" to the German version "Rest" and "Roar." God Bless all of us Rochelle's. 8-)" Dec. 1, 2008: Report as inappropriate

I am now 38 years old and I am married with a last name of Aaron. I think it sounds so pretty - Rochelle Aaron. It just flows and I love this name and am so proud. It's unique and beautiful. We are lucky women to posess such a name." Apr. 20, 2008: Report as inappropriate

  • "Rochelle is the name I was given and one that I am proud to possess. Though my mom claims to have invented the name, it has such a unique quality yet it does not beg for attention (i.e. bizarre made-up Hollywood baby names.) Though the pretty french name doesn't sound so nice paired with my German last one (which is not of the romance languages and frankly quite harsh sounding), I will hopefully marry some Frenchman one day! Or at least non-German. I am 23 years old, and while I have run into the few dumbfounded individuals who can't understand why anyone would name their daugher such a peculiar name, most people tell me it is beautiful, classy, and downright sexy! ;)" Apr. 15, 2008: Report as inappropriate

  • "People often think it is Rachael. I always attempt to pronounce it Ro-shell (accenting the O) I love my name but I am dissapointed that all it means is "little rock" like the name doesn't stand on it's own. Unfortunatly I AM a little "ROCH" which is my older brothers name, or I am the female Roch. I purchased a poster at the mall one Christmas years ago when my son was 5 which went into detail of my sons name and all the characteristics of "Aaron". It was so right on, but I didn't know at the time that it would actually be his character and personality. I was hoping to find something like that on the internet because those people haven't set up in the mall kiosks for the last five years. Someone asked me today...What does your name mean? I couldn't answer the way I could if they asked what does Aaron mean! It left me curious! Other than the feminine of my brother...what does it mean on it's own? I still feel it is a beautiful name, I am grateful for it, everyone I introduce myself to say "what a beautiful name. Also, it beats the hell out of Brittany, Ashley, Tiffany....wouldn't you say? Sincerely, Rochelle" Jan. 16, 2008: Report as inappropriate

  • "i love i tis my name....pronounced RO-SHELL.....people generally get it right. i think people usually assume that persons named rochelle are conscientious and prob some wat conservative. people love the name, its easy to trasit from callin a child rochelle and callin an adult rochelle, unlike other names that kinda sound weird calling a little kid yvonne or calling and adult kimberly...or maybe thats jus me...." Other than that my friends call me "ROCHE" i like. It a cool name people like it wherever i go and most importantly I love it. A name is only what you make it out to be. I believe in living up to a good name. So when you die and you here ROCHELLE you know the personality behind that name. Especially if your name is unusual like mine." • "Rochelle is smoking-hot! Especially with my French last name and the correct French pronciation (RO-SHELL, not RI-SHELL or RAH-SHELL), quite a few people I've met think there's a subtle sexiness or feminine mystique surrounding it. A toast to all of us strong and sexy Rochelles around the world! P.S. to the person who wrote about the Japanese characterization of the name, I love the imagery each syllable/character invokes like picture, poem, flow, nomad, and gothic elements. We are all "Poetry/Art in motion" ;-)" Apr. 25, 2007: Report as inappropriate

  • "Rochelle is a beautiful name. I really don't know how people could pronounce Rochelle as 'Rachel'. I mean the ending resembles, but hello! There's an 'o' after the R. NOT an 'a'! So really, how could someone get it wrong?? And the nick name roach is stupid. The 'ch' sound is not even the same even if it looks like it." Feb. 1, 2007: Report as inappropriate

  • "The only unfortunate part about having the name Rochelle (I like to think of it as RUSH-ELLE)is that foolish folks think I'm a Rachel or Michelle - an absolute insult to what I consider a fantastic unique name! I love my name in that it is feminine without suggesting I am a bimbo and that it carries both an element of strength (roche = rock in french) and softness (elle). Beware, however, that the name can be easily abbreviated to "Roach"! Otherwise, rock on, Rochelles!" Aug. 26, 2006: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is obviously Rochelle. It goes Rochelle Leah... and I've never been unhappy with it. I love it, and love the significance of it. I've only met one other girl with the same name. I come from Canada, so it's not too popular. My friends all love it and think it's very unique and beautiful..... When people ask if I wish I had a different name.... I can honestly say I don't! X) I come from an area that pours nicknames out like a waterfall, so I have a million nicknames whether they apply to Rochelle or not. The ones that do however are: Rusha(Alernate spelling is Russia... long story!), Rochy (SH), Ro, Shell, ShellBell, Shashelly, Rochelley, Cowbell, Rush. People often pronounce it with an "U" sound as in Cup. But also pronounce it with a long "A" and a long "O". I prefer the Short "U" sound for some reason..... Never have really liked the A pronunciation.... :/ I'm 16, and have always appreciated my name, never have gotten teased.... actually that's a lie. I have four brothers and my sister's name is Esther which means "Star" so combining our names they called us "Little Rockstar"..... For some reason I hated it. Now, I don't really care what they call me as long as it's not late for dinner. ;) Since the age of 12, I've never really cared what people think of me, and so having the name Rochelle didn't effect my social status. It's beautiful, has a wonderful, encouraging meaning, and is perfect for my personality. :)" Dec. 31, 2014: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Rochelle Denise from Canada and growing up it drove me crazy when people pronounced it Rawchelle! Or Rachel because last I looked there was no A in my name lol. I used to also get Roach from Hell. I hated it then because of that and not being able to find name plates at the store. I liked that I was always the only one with that name though. • "For some reason my mom decided to spell my name RoEchelle. Not only is it hard enough getting Roechelle pronounced correctly but for some reason the extra E throws everyone off. i used to wish my name was Sara just so I could get the name plates like all the other kids did, but all in all I like my name a bit unusual for a white girl but hey I got an atitude :)" Jun. 30, 2012: Report as inappropriate

  • "I agree with a previous comment. I am learning to embrace my name, but i prefer it to be with the R leading into the chelle. The O is sometimes too strong the way people use it." Feb. 8, 2012: Report as inappropriate

  • "Hello! My name is not Rochelle, but i know someone with this name. Contrary to the info given by Rochelle of the Philippines who was named by her Mom after "Rochelle del Carmen", said Rochelle del Carmen was a popular singer in the Philippines in mid 70s til early 80s. She was never a model." Jul. 4, 2011: Report as inappropriate

  • "As you can see my name is Rochelle as well. Many people called me roach so I didnt answer. Who likes to be called a nasty bug that lives in small spaces. My friends call me "Chelly Belly" and I love it." Apr. 26, 2011: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Rochelle. I guess I like it well enough. I love that I do not meet a lot of other Rochelle's but hate that people often mispronounce it. In school sports teammates would shorten my name to 'Roach' for me to pass them the ball. Being called a bug that disgusts a majority of people most definitely was not going to make them pass the ball. My name was shortened by friends to Shelly which I liked but they then shortened my nickname to Shell. I don't know what it was but I just didn't like it spelt that way. So I took of the 'Ro' of my original name and started spelling it 'Chelle' it soon caught on. I believe when I am about 20+ I will begin referring to myself as Rochelle, but at the present time Chelle is just so much more me :D" Apr. 11, 2011: Report as inappropriate

  • "People my associate the name with African Americans because a lot of African Americans come from French influenced areas, such as Louisiana. I also get that. I too was named after the perfume, which was popular in the 70's. Used to hate getting called "roach" or "roach motel" as a kid, but now love the name. Usually go by "ro" or "chelle belle", sometimes still get called "roch" by teasing friends or family." Mar. 4, 2011: Report as inappropriate

Im 'Rochelle' with the emphasis on the 'chelle', when I heard my parents shout out 'RO - chelle' (with the emphasis on the 'ro') I knew I was in trouble for not cleaning my room etc... Here in South australia, 40 years later, my name is cool and unusual. Boys dig it because it is feminine and unique, girls dig it because they wish they had it...." But anyways, it's a cool name, unusual to hear around the parts of Sydney where I live and everyone is generically named :| and quite beautiful. I get all different nicknames like Chelle, Chelly, Ro, Rosh, Roshy, Chellybelly, Chellybear, Rocky, Chocolate (because of Fererro Roche) and yeah ofcourse Roach but as the name goes, even though it's a little rock like all rocks it's strong :D Love and Peace and whatnot." My friend named her daughter after me, I thought please don't because I thought she would be called the same names. Now that I am older, I actually will tell people what the R. stands for." • "Another Rochelle here in Australia. I can't remember who I was named after, a lady who lived next door to my Nan I think. I used to hate my name also but as I have aged I really grown to like it, I think because, as someone else has said, it is not so common. I get called Chelle, and Chelley also but I also get called Rocky, my family tell me the Rocky part was more likely given to me because as a 4 year old I would dance madly along to The Rocky Horror Picture Show!!!. Yes, I too was teased and called Roche at school after Roche Pharmaceuticals. But after all of the torment, I really have grown to love my name, it was given to me for a reason, and I love it when people say to me "Oh what a beautiful/pretty name, I have never heard that name before"..." • "my name is Rochelle. it's a... different name to say the least, but most everyone i know says its beautiful. i only find it unfortunate that i can't seem to have any cool nick name other than something dumb like "rocky." people pronounce it wrong a lot. i had a teacher for 3 years and she still says it wrong. i've never met someone else in person with the same name as me. it's nice have an different sort of name. i'm only 16 though so, i haven't ben around too long to have met many people with the sam name as myself. you can make the name what you want it, no matter what the name is. own it. make it yours. there will never be anyone else exactly like you, and that's really the way it should be." • "I couldn't pronounce my first name Rochelle so I was nicknamed Shelly and teased about Rochelle as Roche and I was a sensitive kid. and then when I got divorced I went by my middle name Heather. I always wanted to be Susan and hated Rochelle maybe because it was unique and people said ROchelle and it sounded so harsh. Rochelle Heather is on my passport and on my Drivers License it says Rochelle H which unerved me even last week because I am never called Rochelle it just wasn't me. I am thrilled to read the comments from the girls/women who love the name. My mom said she loved Rochelle Hudson. In college my teacher refused to call me Shelly becasue she said I was to be called by my given name. I was really upset. I wanted to blend in I wanted a feminine and pretty name. Today...After seeing the meaning and the correct French pronounciation and reading the nice comments I will not hide my first name anymore, maybe accepting it and not hating it anymore it will bring good luck! Thanks." Aug. 31, 2008: Report as inappropriate

I think the meaning 'little rock' reflects our personalities and the way in which people tend to rely on us. (also the 'little' part applies to me, im just under 5ft tall!) I love my name et je peux parler francais aussi!!! Still haven't visited 'La Rochelle' in France tho!! Big up to all da sexy Rochelle's out there!!!" Apr. 30, 2008: Report as inappropriate

  • "My name is Rochelle obviously because I'm writing about it here. I love my name and I always have. I'm only 16 now, but I've grown up in a small town and no one in the town has my name. It makes me feel unique and it also makes me feel elegant and I don't know why. Even though my names not sara (which means princess) I have always felt like a princess. And I think that the meaning of my names fits me well. I'm little and I think that rocks are strong and are hard to break, and they stand on their own, but they are usually smooth on the outside making them easy to look at and feel. I love my name and I know I always will! :D" Apr. 14, 2008: Report as inappropriate

  • "Born in 1951, this WAS my given name. After a lifetime of disliking the name, I legally changed it to Sara at age 43 (now I'm 56). I have NEVER missed that name for one day and I wished I would have done it 35y before that! What little girl wouldn't rather be a "princess" than a "small rock"! DUH! Growing up in the 50s/60s, I NEVER met anyone else with that name, and was CONSTANTLY correcting people my whole life...no its not MI-chelle...no its not pronounced RO-chelle...no I'm not a "roach" and its not OK if you use that nickname for me! (my parents didn't allow me to be called Chelly). I rated it OK because its not such a bad name now-days; I hear that name all the time now. Little girls just want to fit in, not to be different. OK, so I AM a little odd, but hey, I'm an artist, I'm entitled and I don't need a name that labels me odd right off the bat! Now I am proud of my name and love to sign my artwork and photos with a flair! =)" Oct. 18, 2007: Report as inappropriate

  • "To me, the only difficulty with spelling "Rochelle" might be whether there are one or two "l"s, but all my life I've been subjected to all kinds of weird spellings of this name. Not to mention that in grade school, my teachers would also ask me how to pronounce it! (How do you think it would be pronounced?? I must not have had very brainful teachers....) But, in the end, I love my name. Always have." Sep. 28, 2007: Report as inappropriate

  • "Hey everyone, I'm another Rochelle and loving it! My mom, in a great so-called epiphany, named me after a Gato Barbieri jazz piece called "Don't Cry Rochelle" (which she supposedley liked at the time). When I finally got a chance to hear it years & years later, I was like "What?! This is what you named me after?"; yeah, I wasn't too impressed with it...and neither was she hearing the song again :o) My family is from Haiti, and due to the French legacy, the tendency is to have nicknames w/ identical-sounding, double syllables (like "Loulou", "Gogo", "Deedee", etc.), so from birth my parents called me "Chechelle" (pron. SHEH-SHELL)...i know, not as much a nickname as a term of endearment. In kindergarten/elementary school, I got the gamut of names like "roach motel" and "the roach brothers" (I think b/c of the "Smothers Brothers" show...go figure). A friend of mine used to called me "Roach", but I called her "Gnat" b/c her name was Natalie :o). These days depending on which family or friends, I go by "Chechelle", "Rochelly", "Chelly-belly", "Chelle", "Roshi" (my japanese friends), "Ro", and of course just "Rochelle". I don't really care what people call me; I think it's hilarious how creative people can be! I've met a Rachelle (French version of Rachel) and a Richelle...I think they should just convert to "Rochelle" and join the family" Apr. 24, 2007: Report as inappropriate

  • "Okay the worst experience I have had with my name being Rochelle was in elementary school some mean kids called me roach hotel. That was mean, evil and terrible. Those people are stupid and cruel. People will think of just about any bad variation for any name if they want to so I wouldn't let the roach thing sway your decicision to name your lovely baby Rochelle. I have also had the experience with having my name pronounced with more of an A sound, but I find people can spell my name easier and remember it easier if I say Ro like ROW instead."
