"My name's Kara and I'm 14. It's pronounced kare-a but I get called Kira or Car-a or Karen or Tara a lot. My friends call me karebear or karaboo (caribou). I like the name Kara because it's kinda unique. I've only met one other Kara." Dec. 2, 2019:
"I'm a Kara (care-uh) born in the midwest in the late 80s. In my kindergarten class there were three of us all pronounced the same way, so we all went by Kara + (middle initial). This apparently caused some confusion on my end, as many people heard my "Kara L" as "Carol." Then I moved South and didn't meet any Karas again until I went back to the midwest for college. I've had multiple friends tell me they've used "Kara" as a name for their novel or game characters because they had never met any real people with my name before, so it obviously wasn't very popular in my area. I've had a lot of the nicknames mentioned above, but my mom also calls me "Karushka" in a really bad Russian accent because she thinks it sounds funny, and my dad always called me "Kay-kay." I've always liked my name, but it does sometimes take people a few tries to get it right." Nov. 2, 2019:
"In my 40s. My father loved the Superman Comics as a kid. Supergirl is called Kara, that?s the inspiration. I don?t think they knew DC went with the ?car-a? pronunciation as I am a ?kare-a?. I answer to both but will usually correct people. I often got mistaken as Karen, Sara or Tara in the 80s/90s but that seem to happen much less often now. Thank you Supergirl on tv. Lol.
As a child I went through a phase where I wished my name were longer and more formal. As an adult it doesn?t bother me. It?s just rare enough that people feel obligated to tell you they know ?another Kara? but I?ve probably known about 20 over my lifetime so far, so not *that* rare.
People named Kara will rarely find items with their name on them in gift shops, which is very frustrating as a child. Getting them a personalized gift with their name on it, is usually well-received." Aug. 9, 2019:
"My name is Kara (Cah-Ra) born in 1990. Sometime my family call me Kar-dut. An abbreviation of 'Kara endut (chubby)'. I grew up in Indonesia knowing only 3 other people with the same name. Here, Kara is an unusual name. Often Indonesian will associate it with the name of a coconut milk brand we have here. I used to hate being called "santan (coconut milk)" all the time. But since my Mom told me why she picked my name, I don't care anymore. She intended my name to mean 'beloved' and 'friend', referring to it's meaning in Italian and Irish. My parents did a good job naming me and I would never trade my name for anything in the world. I think that it is their prayer for me to be a beloved friend for someone. A prayer which I intend to live by." Jun. 8, 2019:
"Hello my name is Kara. I was born in 1966. When I was a kid no one had this name. It was different than the rest in a good way. Mom said she named me after my Gramma Caroline. She shortened it and it became Kara Lynn. I love my name.. I'm an original 😊" Feb. 2, 2019:
"Hi my name is Kara and I love my name because there are not many of use around. I have meet 2 people with the name Kara but spelled with a c. So if you name your kid Kara spell it with a k not a c please it will make your kid hate you believe me. I am 12 and i hope by time i am 20 that i have one friend named Kara with a k. So if you read this please name your kid Kara and she will be the most loved and well know kid in the school. So please listen and if not try to pick a good name but it will not be as good as good a Kara!;]" Jan. 10, 2017:
"I'm Kara pronounced Kare-a. My mom says she heard the name from watching a soap opera in the early 70s. Yes my name used to get mispronounced all the time or I'd get called a similar sounding name constantly. Now not so much as the name seems slightly more common. I've always liked my name and how it sounds. I've always liked being different." Dec. 15, 2016:
"I may be wrong but I think I can lay claim to being one of the first people to be called Kara - although I was named for the hurricane!" Apr. 12, 2013:

"BEST NAME EVER! it is my name :) i love it so much. kara jane flows really well. people always pronounce it right- kare-ah. the only annoying thing is when they spell it with a C instead of a K. that's ugly and they should be called "car" uh. kara is a great name!" Mar. 9, 2011:
"My name is Kara(Care-uh). Born in '87 ... i knew 4 other Kara's growing up and even a TaKara. Always play the name game esp. with older people: Cara(car-uh), Karla, Tara, Carrie, and Karen are the most that get used. .. I LOVE my name - Kara Claudette - .. i've had a few nicknames. Karaboo and Karabo among them. I like my nickname that I received at 15 "Bunnie" .. I still go by it today. I love anything rabbit themed <3 ....
If my name wasn't Kara I would have it on my list of girl names" Nov. 29, 2010:

"My name is not Kara, but my daughter, born four months ago, is. it is pronounced care-uh, but nobody has mispronounce it yet. i'm sure when she gets older and starts school, though, she'll get it all the time! I love the name. I do know a few people with the name, but thats not why i chose it. it just sounded like a strong name to me, and it means "pure", which i liked as well." Jun. 17, 2010:
"My name is Kara pronounced car-uh, I absolutely love my name because I don't know anyone who has it, but I do know a lot of "Care-uh's". Personally, I like the way mine is pronounced better. It is unigue, and I get compliments everyday :)" Dec. 17, 2009:
"I'm from the UK and Kara is always pronounced Kar-a (not Kare-a) when I met people from the USA they ALWAYS get my name wrong. It sounds pretty cool as Kar-a but really stupid the other way! & hey it's not with a C either!" Oct. 15, 2009:
"I LOVE my name. I didn't like it growing up 'cause no one ever said it like KARA "care-ah", but now that I am 26, I love having a semi unique name." Oct. 11, 2009:
"My name is Kara. I absolutely love it! I pronounce it Kare-ah. It's really annoying when people say "Car" ah. Grrr! I feel like saying...ummm I'm not a car. LOL I think Kara spelled with a C is ugly and everyone with it should be called "car-ah". LOL" Feb. 21, 2009:
"My name's Kara. I love being called that but it's really hard to come up w/ a knick-name which is frustrating. I tried to get people to call me Kitty. Most Americans pronounce it, "Kare-uh" but the Brits say it "Car-uh" and I'm so used to it now. I don't really mind, though...I've met 2 other people w/ the name." Aug. 4, 2008:
"My name is Kara and I'm 43. My mom and dad named me after a book they read about the Kennedy family-one of their daughter's is a "Kara". I hated my name growing up, because it was SO unusual. EVERYBODY got it wrong. I hate being called car-ah also! I pronounce my name care-ah. I almost ALWAYS have to tell people when I first meet them what my name is, because they just don't get it!" May. 7, 2008:
"I named my daughter Kara but we pronounce it Kar-ah and most people say it Kare-ah and she gets upset, lol. We have had people mess it up as Karla." May. 6, 2008:
"OMG my names Kara! i hated my name sooo much cause my friends all had nicknames and i couldnt make one out of mine! then they came up with Karebear! But i Hate when people call us Car-ah I hate Sooo Much! u pronounce my name like Care-ah!" Feb. 16, 2008:
"Kara Charie LaNell -and my last name- is my full name. I L0VE it! there are a couple of people I know named it, and no offense or anything, but I'm glad I wasnt another ashley or sarah or amanda. I like to be different and unique-- just like my name. TEACHERS are the worst for the 'name game' as I would call it. Always try to spell it *Cara* or call me Car-ah or Kari or Tara or anything else besides my actual name of Kare-ah & I was called carebear from when I was tiny tiny. I watched the carebears a lot, too." Feb. 13, 2008:
"Well my name is kara.(Kare-ah) and i kinda love that the name Kara is uncommon.but i hate sometimes that the teachers prenounce it wrong alot.they call me (Car-ah).also even though its Kara my nickname is karebear." Feb. 2, 2008:

"I like this name a lot, and think it has great meanings" Mar. 15, 2007:
"I love having this name. It's pretty but serious-sounding. Sometimes people think I'm saying "Karen" and sometimes I get it spelled with a C but it's not like it's a complicated fix. I have met MAYBE four other Karas in my lifetime. It comes from Katherine, means "friend" and "dear" and lots of nice things, though I've just found out it's slang for penis in Serbian. Still I think in our part of the world, it's got a sophisticated edge over names like Kathy and Kayley." Nov. 25, 2006:
"I love my name. I think it suits my personality. I very rarely meet other Karas or Caras, which I like. I'll answer to either "Care-a" or "Car-a;" people pronounce it differently even in my own family. As long as you don't call me Tara or Sarah or Karen or Carol, we're good. And I like its meaning." Nov. 18, 2006:
"I love my name...you don't hear it everywhere. In school sometimes teachers would pronounce it CARa...so I had to correct them. But much easier than alot of the crazy spellings out there nowadays!" Sep. 13, 2006:
"I've always liked my name! Sometimes I do have to correct people on pronounciation...they like to pronounce it CAH-ra instead of KEH-ra." Sep. 1, 2006:
"I have really liked having the name Kara despite mispellings and incorrect pronunciations because it is not too common and is very pretty. Like many names, it means 'Pure'." May. 22, 2006:
"My daughter's name is Kara. Every time I say her name I fall in love with it more! Ocassionally people think her name is Karen, but not often. Or they call her CARE-A. We pronounce it K AH RUH." May. 20, 2006:

"Hi guys my name is Kara and I live in London uk ... my name is quite unpopular and I have never known another person with my name ... but I love it and I feel original as I want to be and with this name nobody can forget me !" Feb. 18, 2019:
"My name is Kara... It's pretty nice, although it's short so nicknames are quite limited. People don't take me seriously when I say I want a nickname because my name is already nickname length apparently... Ha. Kari is an adorable nickname I think. I've been called Karabear since I was born!
I often get called Kar-a instead of Kare-a which is annoying as sin. I also have a slight pet peeve for Kare-uh :)" Jan. 13, 2016:
"My name is Kara, Iv only heard of 3 others so not real popular where I'm from.. It's ok not my favorite but it works :)" Oct. 30, 2014:

"Hi my name Is Kara! I pronounce it "Kare-uh" and I absolutely love it! When I was younger people use to say it incorrectly and I would get upset but that I am older I just correct them. I like it because it is unique and I don't know many people with the same name." Oct. 15, 2010:
"hey, I'm Kara, and I too get Car-ah a lot. It's like, "Cara is with a C, Car-a, get it right!" Teachers who have known me all year still call me Cara and don't even realize it when they read my name off of a list. I stopped correcting them though, because either they do know my name is Kare-a, or I'll never see them again and I don't care. The only nickname anyone has ever come up with is Karebear for me, although I saw one of the earlier posts had caribou, that's clever." Mar. 22, 2009:
"my name's kara and i think it's the greatest name ever. it's sexy. haha" Mar. 13, 2009:
"Like everyone else here, my name is Kara. And, like everyone else, I hate when people call me Car-uh. It gets aggravating when somone asks me my name, and usually go through the regular list of guesses, "Car-uh, Keira, Karrie, Tara and FINALLY Kara. I really do like our name though. Everyone I meet says its a pretty name. It's also
pretty unique. We even have a sea named after us! (I thought it was cool) Anyways, to every Kara in the world, I'm happy we share the same name!" Mar. 2, 2009:
"My name is Kara and I'm in my early 20s. My family pronounces my name Kare-ah, but when we lived abroad for awhile it was always Car-ah. I'm used to both by now, even though the latter still makes me think twice. I also got the nickname Karebear a lot, but I was also called "Kari" for a long time as a nick-name. Apparently my parents heard the name from an Italian character in the mini-series Brideshead Revisited. THey thought it was unique, but then I was in the same class as another Kara throughout gradeschool." Jan. 15, 2009:
& honestly if i had any other name it would be so weird
