"The great Civil War photographer has the name of Mathew Brady. Mathew Baynton(english actor), Mathew Waters(australian actor), Mathew Kearney(singer)Mathew Stokes(soccer player) And I also carry the spelling. I tell folks my mother just wanted to be different. I also joke when a receptionist asks me my name that it is also with one "M". Now we don't all have to be Math enthusiasts here" Dec. 29, 2013:
"I'm Mat or Mathew with one T and I love it. Yes it's been a bit of a pain especially when I have to prove it to someone. But my little boy has Mathew with one T as his middle name. Very rare if at all would I find a; pen, marker, toy license plate, name tag, neckless, with my spelling. But the pros are just as many. I can tell people right away "yes Mat like doormat" or as a kid playing acade games I could put my full first name as the initials. It's a ice breaker sometimes or when some dude would try and be cool and smart off something about my name thinking he was the first one with that joke till I turn it around back on him. I've only met maybe 5 people named Mathew with one T and it's hard to even beleive them at first. It's what makes me me, and I like me." Dec. 10, 2013:
"My grandad was called Mathew with one 't', as is my brother and now my son too. We nearly spelled our Mathew with two t's to save him having to correct people but it just didn't seem right with it being a family tradition. When we talk to people about the spelling with one 't' we find people are intrigued and we are glad we kept the tradition." Jan. 15, 2013:
"I've been a Mathew with one t my whole life and so has my father and son. Why waste all those t's!" Dec. 13, 2012:
"My name is Mathew too! Sweet! I blame it on my mother who didn't know how to spell :) All Mat's are cool. like me. or is it just me?" Jun. 26, 2012:
"I love my name, although to agree with those others that posted it is annoying when it gets mispelled." May. 15, 2012:

"My name is Mathew Dillon, as is my father's. I enjoy having only one t in my name, even when its shortened to Mat. If too many people give you a problem about it, just tell them that Mathews County, Virginia spells it the same way, and ask them to prove Rand McNally wrong!" Feb. 19, 2010:
"I love the name Matthew. I like that it means gift from god. But people sometimes wrong like mathew or maffew. I like to call myself maff too.:). - Matthew Kirkland" Feb. 14, 2010:
"My brother is named Mathew WITH ONLY ONE "T" and he loves it! He feels unique. Matthew with two T"s always gets connected to the biblical name and the One 'T" spelling is more universal for all, considering not everyone is christian!!
I LOVE IT!" Feb. 10, 2010:
"Mat's my name and I'm cool with it. my parents are indian and it's just the way you spell it back in india. i was born in the us though, and even though it gets spelled wrong a lot, it's cool" Jan. 24, 2010:
"I love my name. Of course it's misspelled quite a bit. People always ask why it's spelled with one T and I always blame it on my mom, It always opens up opportunities to chat with people. I always say I'm a one T Mat and people look at me weird, ask me how that's pronounced and we have a good laugh about it. I like to be called Mathew, but I'll settle for Mat. Just don't put door in front of it." Feb. 10, 2009:
"Its my fiance's name & I love it! For our future kids (boy, of course) might look into selecting something close to Mathew or perhaps middle name Mathew.." Feb. 6, 2009:
"I enjoy the different spelling to my name. My friends call me Mat, but I do prefer Mathew. The DMV/RMV misspelled my name on my license, it took 3 days of waiting in the DMV to actually get my license, and now my legal alias is Matthew. :-(" Aug. 18, 2008:

"Well my full name is Mathew, but of course I go by Mat. People always assume it's always with two 'ts' which kinda annoys me. What annoys me more though is in my e-mails my signature will say Mat and people still refer to me as Matt lol" May. 22, 2008:

"i love the name Mathew. It is the name of my boyfriend, and i always called him "Matt" and i always knew it to be a name of mostly cool people here. I am only a junior, but I've seen many people with the name, and i happen to think there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. i even hope to name(if i get a boy when i'm married to Matt) my little boy Matt, and am now talking to Matt about it ^_^ I don't see why people would laugh at that name in the first place, of course it might be because i'm biased." Jan. 9, 2008:

"Stupidity breeds more stupidity as one mistake creates 70,000+ since 1880. Take the 1st comment, my name is Mathew but I shorten it to Matt? Ugh. I'm sure they pronounce it Matthew , but that'd be incorrect as well. Dumbing down of society folks & don't ask me to mispronounce your name because you forgot a "t", but want to be socially acceptable. Follow the rules of pronunciation & give the name 2 t's if you want it to sound like Matthew or shorten it to Matt, but realize Mat is what is on the ground in front of my front door." Nov. 26, 2011:
"I don't mean to be mean, but...
Go to the Bible, look up the first book of the New Testament. Gospel of...(not Mathew)." Jun. 7, 2009:

"I was just tatooed and I used a quote from the Bible. I did not catch the spelling with one T until it was done. At first I was annoyed but realized that I like things different and it dosent take away from the quote or the meaning. So cudos to Mathew with one T." Mar. 23, 2013:

"My son is Mathew. He is the third, named after both his father and grandfather. When people ask why one t, I tell them what my mother in law tells me. He's named after his father and in order to be the third it had to be spelled with one T. I love it because its different and he can tell people he's the third. He shares a name with dad and pop and maybe one day hell have a son hell name Mathew" Sep. 5, 2012:
"My son's name is Mathew and it was my fault. I was on Demerol in the hospital when they shoved all the papers at me. I later was flipping through the bible looking for something and realized my mistake. Oh well. My son is 17 and I love him, one T and all.." Aug. 5, 2012:
"I named my son Mathew as well!! Yes! With one 'T' and I love it!!! I hate when people try to spell it with 2 'T's, I spelled it like that on purpose! Looks ans sounds better!(: AND goes better w/ a middle name(: <3MATHEW!" Jan. 5, 2012:
"My name is spelled Mathew, I had no idea until I went to get my drivers license and my birth certificate became involved. My entire life before that point I, my family, my medical records and my school spelled it with two t's. My social security card has two t's still to this day and I am 25, but my drivers license has one T. My signature is Matt, not that big of a deal. Best part is that I could get a gmail account which is my own name." May. 18, 2011:
"just spell it with two "t" you bogan parents out there." Apr. 9, 2011:
"My name is Mathew. The Catholic nun who helped my mom when she gave birth to me gave that name. Somehow the birth registrar wrote it with one 'T' on the cert. I am not a Catholic now, so I what the guy said about it being protestant is encouraging to me (not that I am ant-Catholics.Sometimes people call me 'Matt' or mispell it with two 'Ts', but it's fine by me. I had a stuggle about the one and two 'Ts' for quite a while that I thought of changing it in my birth cert, passport, etc. But that would be messy. I later discovered that one T is an English variant derived from the French Matheu and others. For me, one or two Ts, the meaning is still the same, "Gift of God". That's most important. You were born as your were named and God never made a mistake. So all you Mathews with one T, be proud of your name! dont forget to remind the travel agent it shouldnt be mispelled or you'll miss your flight, lol." May. 7, 2010:
"This is the definite answer people. A comment left alludes to religion, which is somewhat correct. Names are co-opted over time to mean different things, or to claim a difference by way of spelling. The origin of the two spellings is this: Matthew is for those who are Catholic. Mathew is for those who are Protestant. It was a way to identify your faith. As Matthew means gift from god, there were those who were determined to use their name to identify their faith, hence the difference in the T's. Here endeth the lesson!
The spelling now is inconsequential as many have forgotten, or have been ignorant of the origin, however if you were to travel to a predominately protestant city and whip out a credit card with 'Matthew' you'll get some strange looks, given the protestant passion of their faith.

"I'm expecting to have my first son very soon. And we have chosen the name Mathew. For no reason but just because we love the name.. I'm still torn between one t or two... Mathew with one t just looks right to me! It looks.... Clean." Feb. 6, 2010:
"My Father's name is Mathew and my middle name is Mathew. For years, people have told me it is spelled incorrectly. For crying out loud, if my parents would have named me REVTEROPTOMOUS, or anything else, would they tell me it is spelled incorrectly?!? I like it, my father's name is spelled this way since his birth in Europe. My family's tradition is to name your first born son after your grandfather, so I told my son about the One "t", two "t" issue, and told him he can name his son anything he likes, but to be aware that the "Future Mathew" will have to deal with ignorant people telling him that his name is spelled incorrectly his entire life. This is not so bad since there are much more devestating things to deal with in life... LOL
Have a great day and name one of your children "Mathew" to have them spice up there life!
