Some people do have difficulty pronucing/spelling it, but people either generally love it, or if they are jewish, they tell me that it means 'grandfather'. Comment left Oct 15, 2006: "The meaning of Zaida is "lucky" or "fortunate" in Arabic. The names Siad/Ziad and Saŭd/Zaŭd are derived from the same Arabic word. My name is misspelled/mispronounced often. I spell my name with a dieresis (umlaut in German), thus it is Zaŭda. It is pronounced with three syllables: Za-ee-da. Others often say it with two syllables, either with the vowel sound like "eye" (Z-"eye"-da) or Zayda, to rhyme with "say". I also hear a Spanish pronounciation, with the "d" being pronounced as a "th". My family is of Arab origin, therefore I use the correct Arabic pronounciation. Apparently, it is a fairly common name in my grandfather's homeland of Syria. As a born and raised American, it's so strange to think of my name as anything but uncommon!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jan 08, 2006: "My name Zaida is pronounced Zy-da. I am told it is originally an old Persian name adopted by the Spanish in Spain during the 800 year Moorish domination. Allegedly a Kalif had three daughter princesses and one, who is infamous, was called Zaida. There is poetry in the archives of the university of madrid about the infamous Zaida. Depending on how it is pronounced, the old Persian/Farsi meanings are either "Oh, holy one" or "one who is not necessary" .. some people has problems pronouncing it but the most of the peeps i know learn eventually to say it when they see it wrote.
I think is a strong and beatifull name.Personaly i haven't heard of people with my name only Zaira or Snaida or Aida... but not Zaida, i have heard from other people that the know people who's name was Zaida also. Either way i like to know that we are a few.
