User Comments about the name Una

  • Comment left Aug 08, 2008: "Una is my daughter's name, pronounce "oona". She's 3 1/2. I think the name feels international - is a word in the Italian and Spanish languages, a city in Brazil, a river in Bulgaria, and in Edmund Spencer's epic poem Faerie Queen, Una represents truth and saves the Red Cross Knight." Comment left Jul 14, 2008: "GREAT NAME. WE WILL BE NAMING OUR BABY GIRL UNA." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jun 11, 2008: "Cool name which deserves a revival in both England and the United States, while currently popular in Ireland (so I believe). Some parents would name a first daughter of theirs Una, as it is the Latin (also Italian/Spanish/Portuguese) feminine word for "number one". This name may make a young girl stand apart from all those little Emilys and Emmas in the U.S. nurseries." (Report as inappropriate)

  • Comment left Jun 11, 2008: "well my name is oona spelled that way not the other way (una)" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jun 04, 2008: "We just named our daughter Una." (Report as inappropriate)

  • Comment left Jun 03, 2008: "As an Irish name it is sometimes Anglicized as Juno, Unity, Winifred, or Agnes. The last two of these four names, unfortunately, sound utterly DISGUSTING! However, Una wouldn't be so bad." (Report as inappropriate)

  • Comment left Apr 11, 2008: "My parents are from Brittany, France, and gave me the Breton variation of this name - Youna. While I despised it as a child, I feel I have grown into it, and it now forms a central part of my identity." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Mar 27, 2008: "I think Una is a really pretty name. my grandpa breeds show cattle and there was one beautiful little female that i called her Una. i think it is pronounced oona, i have never heard it pronounced youna" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Mar 10, 2008: "Love the name Love being "unique" Love Guinness Land" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jun 06, 2007: "People pronounce it wrong all the time. I hated it as a child. But as an adult noone ever forgets me when they meet me. I love my name, very unique and fun." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Apr 12, 2007: "Greatest name ever! I am naming my second daughter this. We will pronounce it "oona" and spell it Una with a falda over the "U". This is the Irish way of spelling and pronouncing the name." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Apr 02, 2007: "I am 26 Years old & i love my name. I think una is a lovely name" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Mar 24, 2007: "My name is Una. I am of Irish descent, and my understanding is that the gaelic pronounciation is oo-na. The English name Una name is a derivative of the latin word unus, meaning "one" or "whole" (as in unanimous or united). Accordingly, the anglicized pronounciation of the name is yoo-na. I like this name because its unique, and while it is considered a gaelic name, its much easier for people outside of Ireland to pronounce and spell than some other names (i.e. Mairead - my poor sister' name)! I like both the gaelic and latin-derived pronounciation (I go with the gaelic oo-na). Whether the gaelic and latin versions are related is unclear to me. So far, I've been told that in modern Irish Una means, "famine" or "hunger," and that in Irish lore, Una was a tragic heroine, who pined away and died after being forbidden to see her lover. Not very inspiring!! If these reports are true, I definately like the latin meaning better!!!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Mar 16, 2007: "My name is Una too! My family calls me U-na growing up but my teachers and schoolmates always called me oona and this is how it has been since then ... I introduce myself as oona since that's the Irish pronunciation but whether people call me U na or oona, I don't even pay anymore attention." (Report as inappropriate)

  • Comment left Jan 07, 2007: "We named our daugther this. We spell it "una" and pronounce it "oona". She is 21 months old and it fits her beautifully. We get so many compliments on her name. I remember her name from the fairy on the 80's film "Legend"." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jan 03, 2007: "This was my grandmothers name, and my mothers name. If I ever have a daughter she will get this name too. Neither of them appreciated it or used it but I think it is beautiful. In our family it is pronounced you-na too." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Dec 18, 2006: "If I ever give birth to a girl, her name is definately going to be UNA! :) In Bosnia, this name is pronounced "oona" ;) I love it!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Apr 27, 2006: "Una is a beautiful and very traditional but unused name." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Apr 04, 2006: "I have this name and too tell you the truth I think it's a very unique name! Most people think it rhymes with tuna or luna but whatever I least I have a better name then them. And yes people have the tendency to misprounonce it! I am 14 years old, but I love my name!" (Report as inappropriate)
