I was named after my aunt, whose given name was Tamara, but my mother always called her, "Tammy". I have ambivalent feelings about my name. I think my biggest issue was not having it be short for anything. Tammie is a cute little girls' name, not so much when you're nearly 40. Add my middle name to the mix and you find that many women were given the middle name "Marie" because it sounds good with almost anything. Original. Worst part about being a "Tammie"? Hands down: drunken, 60-70 year old men who try to sing the song and sound nothing like Debbie Reynolds! These days my friends call me "Tam" and almost everyone spells it wrong, including my closest friends and family members..." (Report as inappropriate)

That was pretty cool. But it is a pity that no one could ever spell it correctly. I guess it's a big conversation starter. I get the same questions when I meet someone new. "Is this short for something?" or "How do you spell your name?" or "Have you heard of that song "Tammy" by Debbie Reynolds?" I asked my mom why she named me that. Her response was "It was easy for me to pronounce" (she's deaf). I thought it would be a nice story but I guess not. Sad to say that I have not lived up to the meaning of my name. Who could, right? Even the ones that went by "Tam-ee" used that as a nickname for their real name "Tamara" but almost all of them have been very close to my age. It is often misspelled but rarely is it pronounced incorrectly. Some do try to make it "Tommy" instead when reading my name. I love having a name that is not the same as everyone else's. It is not so unusual that I was teased for it but unususal enough that there was no confusion when I was the one being spoken to. It's a sassy name, a fun name, but can also be a serious name when needed. Otherwise...it is just my name and I am glad that it does not mean Palm Tree..." (Report as inappropriate)
