My mom named me ultimately after the movie Tammy and the Bachelor. She wanted to give me an "adult" name and Tammy is my nickname. She says she didn't want to name me Tamera because it sounded like the song the wind mariah. I do not go by Tamela I only go by Tammy. I actually don't like it when people call me Tamela. Comment left Jul 24, 2008: "the name is ugly and i wouldn't wish it on anyone. i am actually used to it but still get sick of correcting people (yes it is my name)on the pronunciation. it really just never sounds pretty, just different.i have met several women with this name. usually they seem to be about 10-15 years older, which i suppose puts their births in the late 50's to mid 60's. and i suppose the correct way to say it is like pamela with a T cuz that seems to be my daily response." I used to get really upset when people could'nt pronounce my name,everyone would always say: Tamella,Tameela,Pamela,Tamara,or spell it Tamala, or something totaly off. I really used to hate my name. I am a real estate agent and it helps to seperate me from the competition so I love it. I too, am constantly saying T like Texas or Toronto. When I was a child, I went by Tammy; however, I now will correct anyone who doesn't call me Tamela! (I also tell them it is like Pamela with a T.) I will note that on several instances people have seen my name in writing (I also have a unique and somewhat "foreign" last name.) and assumed that my name was TamEEEla or Ta Mella and that I was a black woman. Comment left May 22, 2008: "I named my daughter Tamela. Her father is Zulu and I am Xhosa. in both languages to 'thamela' means to bask in the sun. We prefer it spelt without the 'h'. We want her to live a very relaxed life, like when you are basking in the sun. Whilst everyone else will be running around trying to grab opportunities, she will just relax and everything good will come to her! I'm so happy the name exists in other languages as well." I have no problem saying Tamela, but everyone else seems to. i think it's a great name and it even has noble origins. The name Tamela and the name Tamar both go back to ancient majestic Palm trees that signified roalty and majesty. Some ancient kings even lined the walls of thier palaces and temples with carvings of Palm trees. One of the kings of ancient Isreal even had a daughter named the Hebrew: Tamar. So I don't think anyone should be ashamed of the name Tamela. It is a majestic and royal name. And, as in the case of my wife, the many people who wear this name only enhance it's beauty, so much as a beautifull garment can only be highlighted by the beautiful person who wears it." I've been called Pamela 3/4 of my life and no one can spell or pronounce Tamela correctly. What's so hard about 1 letter, Pamela with a T. I've never met another Tamela. Didn't realize there were this many. The pronounciation I hate the most is

I go by tammy and have given serious thought to having tammy added leagally to my name. I have been called tamale,ta-mee-la, pamela and worst of all Pam. Pam is a great name if your name is Pamela, but hey i dont want to be called Pam. My own grandmother has trouble spelling my name.
