Most people mispronoune it and when someone says it right, I acknowledgment them for it. I have NEVER met anyone with this name. **Funny** Some other Tamela did not like being called 'Tammy'. My mother told me the reason she named me Tamela is because she liked the name Pamela but wanted to call me Tammy, so she came up with Tamela. I, however, am ok with my name now...I actually prefer Tamela to Tammy. I do not introduce myself as Tammy anymore. Only Tamela. Maturity has set in I guess. :) One other thing,, I had one teacher who would misprounounce my name even after I corrected her....I do not know what was up with that...." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Sep 14, 2009: "I went all through high school known as tamela and when I got a copy of my original birth certificate, I found out that there was an error and my mother never got it fixed so in all actuality my name is Tammella Sue, but I have gone all my life as Tamela. I also use the like pamela whith a "T". And I am glad to know that I am not the only one out here being called Tamale. I also wanted to let you guys know that I hate being called tammy, cause my mom always told me if she wanted me to be called tammy she would have named me tammy. Comment left Jul 15, 2009: "My name is Tamela Renee. I was born in 1962. I love my name. For most of my life I went by "Tammy" but about 4 years ago started hating that nickname. My family still calls me that but new aquaintences (including my husband of 9 months who calls me Tam) know me as Tamela. It's amazing to me that people can pronounce Pamela but can mutilate Tamela as badly as they do. Tamila, Tamale....I get it all. I too am always saying, "Pamela with a T."" (Report as inappropriate)

I like my name, but after years of hearing it mutilated...I often use my mother's name "Jane" when at a restaurant (if a name is required). My mom told me that Tammy Wynette used the name Tamela and she loved it and at an early age knew she would use it. My family calls me Lou....from Tamelou. Crazy! My close friends call me Tam. My brother calls me tameela, my boss called me tamalita, my uncle called me tamale stew. It has only been recently that I've decided that it's not such a bad name. Comment left Nov 13, 2008: "My name is Tamella pronounced Ta-mel-la. however there is an error on my birth certificate my name was typed Tanella with and "n" as opposed to the correct letter "M". My mother, being the rebel she is, refused to pay for the correction as she felt it was their error. As time went on, I decided not to correct it. What's most interesting to me is african americans love the name Ta-mel-la but strongly dislike Ta-nel-la. However with other races it's just the opposite they love the name Ta-nel-la but find Ta-mel-la a little hard to say and remember. Go figure...." (Report as inappropriate)

My friends know me as Tammy and my biggest issue with that is most of the people either have an aunt or a mother named Tammy.
