Comment left Nov 11, 2009: "Here in Brazil we spell Tamara almost like in Russia. Though me and my family do not have a Russian background or whatever - we're from Spain actually LOL - my mother liked the name a lot - even I do, specially when compared to Antonia, Maria or whatsover. People call me Tam, Tammy, Ta - an open "a" just like "father" - and Tama. When I was little they used to call me turtle or Tamar too - because of a Brazilian non-governmental org. Who take care of turtles, the Tamar project.
I like my name, it's strong and determined" (Report as inappropriate)

Throughout junior high and high school I was known as Ty (Tamara Yvonne), but my family (particularly uncles) have referred to me as 'Tomorrow' and 'Tomato'. I haven't met many other Tamara's in my life, but when I was a teenager my drama troupe had a guest jazz teacher do workshop with us. Her name was also Tamara, but when the director pronounced her name the way mine is pronounced she snapped, and screamed "IT'S TAMARA! LIKE CAMERA! BUT WITH A T!!!" She was a little scary... lol. My cousin found that story amusing, and still calls me "Tamara, Like Camera" when she phones me. I read somewhere that Tamara also means 'Lotus Flower', which I thought was really beautiful. The first time I ever looked up the meaning it said 'Painter of the Palms'." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Sep 18, 2009: "I have met quite a few other Tamaras. My family always shorten it to Tam. Grandmothers/great aunts to Tammie. My name is pronounced Tam-mar-rah although sometimes people incorrectly pronounce it Tama-rah. At school I would get tomorrow, tomato, Tim-Tam (an Australian chocolate biscuit) and tampon (gross, I know). I do not like the sound of my name - especially when teachers said it when I was in trouble." (Report as inappropriate)

(or else I would obviously not have named her that! ) :) We pronounce it Tuh-MAH-rah and haven't had any problems with teasing, nicknames or pronounciation!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Apr 05, 2009: "Hayy Evryone!! Ma name's Tamara (derr)... I'm 13, in year 9 and I live in Australia... My name is pronounced Ta-mah-ra, sounds like ra-ra lol... I've only ever met three (3) other people with the same name as me, but two were seniors and the other was in prep... lol... Pretty much evryone spells my name wrong at first... i've had: Tamra, Temerra, Tamera, Tahmra, Tamarh, Tamarah and Tmra... It's soo annoying! People almost ALWAYS pronounce my name correctly, except a few times i've been called "Tamorra" <--(tomorrow pronounced wierd)... I love the fact that there are a few different nicknames, otherwise it'd be boring... My family call me Tam or Tammy, Friends call me Tamzy or Mara and Other people just call me Tamara... See yas!! mwah xx" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Mar 23, 2009: "I'm a Tamara in high school and I'm the only one. have only met another Tamara in my whole life and it wasn't that bad cuz they called her by her second name. so i have always been called Tamara and I'm the only one. there have been A LOT of people that write the name wrong, probably because it has so many variables of it (Tamora, Tamera, Tamrah, Tamarah, etc.). mine is Tamara like Camara. i like the Indian meaning better, its spice. and i find it more interesting than palm tree... like both i can say w/e seems better at the moment...." Comment left Mar 22, 2009: "Well its actually my middle name and its spelled Tamarh. Its supposed to be Tamarah but they messed up my birth certificate. I pronounce it tuh-MA(rhymes with bat)-ruh. But I like this name better than my first name. I hate my first name." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Mar 19, 2009: "It's very common for people the mispronounce and misspell Tamara [which i my name as well] The way i pronounce my name is like Camera with a T. Simple. I get called Tamera which is tum-air-uh. And Tuh-mar-uh. It so annoying and i correct the teachers every time them mispronounce it. Of course i should be over it, but i am not. I'm 18 and almost out of High School and it's just annoying. I used to not like my name but when i thought about having a common name I would be confused. There is one other Tamara at our school and she is a cheerleader, so everyone knows her and they'll call her name and then i'll turn around and be like WHAT? Only to find that they were not talking to me. So it's sad. All in all, I like my name. Props to all Tamaras!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Mar 14, 2009: "My name is also Tamara i love my name because it`s not common. i`ve been called Tammora,Tommorow,Ta-mai-ra mostly. It`s pronounced Tamara sounding like camera (which we use to take pictures). This is how I always have to introduce my name but it`s a great one!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Mar 05, 2009: "My name is Tamarra pronounced TA-MAR-RA. I am 32 and growing up and to this day I am called tomorrow, tam-air-a, tamyra, the list goes on. For some reason my cousin and I always looked in the baby name book so I was aware that this name was Hebrew for Palm Tree.... well that is just what I needed I was the tallest skinniest girl in my class with the BIGGEST feet. How fitting my mother knew just what she was doing! Well, as I went through those turbulent teens my aunt brought to my attention that palm trees are not just for beauty but they are strong and they weather many storms. I am sure this a reflection of all ladies here." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 26, 2009: "The origin of the name is ARABIC as it is derived from Tamr (Date) and date is sacred food in Islam as well as palm-trees that are a symbol of pride of our Arabic culture." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 25, 2009: "Hey my name is Tamara I am 24 and live in winnipeg canada I pronounce it tam air a and also used to be called tommorow and tomato I like thinking of the my name meaning tree of life rather than plain date palm tree. I have only met 2 other people named Tamara I like it because it makes me unique I think." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 23, 2009: "My name is Tamara (pronounced Tam-air-ah) I often get called Tamra,tameera,tam-mur-ah. I, was also called Tammie but preferred to be called Tamara in high school. I asked my mother why she named me Tamara since I come from Irish- English background and the name is hebrew/russian etc. She gave me the name because my grandmothers name was Mary and it was tied into the name as well she felt it was a name that I could alter as I got older if I didn't like my name (tara, tammy, etc) I love my name. I get a lot of compliments on it and I thought it was a name that there wasn't much cruel kids could make fun of me for. Although kids think of anything and when I was 7 yrs old I still had not grown a good full head of hair it was fine baby hair and the kids figured one out. Tamara no-haira lol Geez kids think of everything. lolol" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 17, 2009: "Im Tamara I tink its alrite nd i hate it im inbetween .In scool every1 calles mi tomorrow or tamato nd i hate it . Alot of people tink its a really nice name .i found out it meant palm tree nd i hate de meanin lol" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 06, 2009: "Hey, my name is Tamara also, I'm from Slovenia. I like my name a lot, it's quite rare, so I have only met a couple of people who share my name in my life. I think it's sweet that it means "palm tree" because I've always liked palms, they're like a symbol of exotic. People generally pronounce it correctly(or at least that's how I've pronounced it my whole life) which is: TAH-muh-rah but sometimes they say Tuh-MAH-rah,which I don't like and I get quite agitated :) There are also several songs dedicated to a Tamara that are very known around here and people always sing the songs to me, which is way cute I think, because it doesn't happen to people with different names :) I've had lots of nicknames like Tammy, Tamzy, Mari, Tamary ... I prefer Tamary, though. So, yeah, it's a great name and I wouldn't change it." (Report as inappropriate)
