I deal with it by calling the person who makes the mistake a name that can't possibly be right (like if a female calls me Sharon, I call her Frank). Many people shorten my name calling my Shanana (pronounced Sha-nA-nA) or Shann or Shanie. one person calls me ann.. nobody has called me janet yet! Although one teacher once pronounced my name Shan-neen... I have only meet 3 other Shannons. 1 was a man, 1 was a dog, and 1 was somebody my age.

I also hated that it didn't have a cute, girly nickname. Now that I'm an adult, I think my name marks me very clearly as a child of the 70s - I've never known a Shannon under the age of 30. Even though it's a fairly common name, people often think my name is Sharon or Janet or even Stephanie (Stephanie???). Still, I now think it's a pretty name and even though it sounds sort of dated, at least I wasn't named Jennifer or Michelle like 75% of the women my age seem to be!" (Report as inappropriate)

I am usually refered to Shannie or Shannie-Mae by my family and close friends most of the time. I have never known another Shannon until about a year ago when I worked with 3 other Shannons (all females) which was a little confusing. But all in all, I couldn't be happier with my name! As a side note, for the Shannon's that didn't know, the name Shannon in Ireland means so or daughter of John or Shawn. My father's name is John, so that is why my name is Shannon, it's the equivelant of being named after your father. I am a girl, and I always get so many compliments on how lovely my name is. I plan to be a famous comedian, so I'll get my name out there for all of us Shannons! ;-)
