Comment left Jul 18, 2006: "The language origin of the name "Salma" stems from the Arabic word "Salaam", meaning peace. It is often confused with "Selma" which is a Christian name. I've seen some baby name sites list the language origin as Spanish, and have given it the meaning "ambitious"; this is completely incorrect and likely a result of the Mexican actress Salma Hayek being so popular. Salma Hayek, incidently, has a Lebanese father which is why she has a Middle Eastern first name." (Report as inappropriate)
