I fell in love with it then because it was so unique. And when I was pregnant I rediscovered it while reading the Anne Rice Novel "The Witching Hour". I did hear the name because of Brooke Shields (though I had read Anne Rice's novel 10+ years before that) and thought it was very pretty and unusual. Rowan has been used as a girl name before Brooke had her daughter. Rowan to me has always been a unisex name. It may have orginated as masculine, but tuened to unisex. There is a female charachter in the Movie Wicker Man from the 70's named Rowan.There is also a female charachter in the Anne Rice novel "The Witching Hour" named Rowan. That book was published in 1990, and it's that book that I got my love of the name Rowan from. I think it's a pretty name for girls, and a distinguished name for boys." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jul 15, 2005: "We selected this name for our daughter based on the significance of the significance in Celtic tradition of the tree by the same name, one we saw throughout Scotland during our honeymoon. We were then devastated to learn that Brooke Shields named her daughter Rowan mere months before ours was born. Sure enough, the bleed over from people who read only the covers of tabloids while standing in line at the grocery story seems to have started: incidents of girls being named "Rowan" suddenly spiked at more than 300 in 2004, after barely registering as a girl's name before that.
