I don't think I ever liked being called Mona when I was younger....I didn't think it sounded as nice. But, now (40) as a professional, I find it much more simple. It's easier to remember and spell. My Father loved the song (with a photo of Dolores del Rio as Ramona on the sheet music. He named his first daughter after his mother, then he was able to name me whatever he wanted. I love the name and have known its meaning for many years. And like most Ramonas I am protective of those I love. I have met only two Ramonas in my life. There also is a book about Ramona the indian girl who fell in love with the Mexican boy. A big love story in that era. I love my name and most people do misspell it. I cringe when I see Ramona spelled Romona. Phonetically it is wrong. My nick name to family and old friends is Monie and all through high school I went by Mona. Then I grew into my name and love it. It is more formal than Mona and is great for business. No one ever confuses me with someone else. All the Ramona's should meet and have a big party to meet one another. I have always wondered how quirky we all are.
My experience in meeting people with our name is that we're all strong willed individuals who stand up against stuff that's wrong when we see it. Thus living up to the meaning of 'wise protectress'.
Has anyone else had this experience?

It's nice to see that some of you share the same name and have come here. When I was a little girl, my nick name was Monie. I loved being called Monie & was only called Ramona at school or when my Mother was mad at me! "Ramona Joy"...I love the meaning of the name too. "Wise Protectress" that suits me.
