User Comments about the name Pat
Comment left Jun 10, 2008: "Probably started out as a late 19th-century pet form of Matilda, replacing the earlier Mat, and influenced by other formal female names beginning M- and having pet forms in both M- and P- (as in Maggie/Peggy which are from Margaret and Molly/Polly which are from Mary). However, from the 1920s onwards this came to almost universally be thought of as a pet form of Patricia. It is also short for the male name Patrick, but I think "Pat" is better suited to women than men. It is rather dated these days, though, regardless of the gender." (Report as inappropriate)
