Comment left May 26, 2008: "Subtract the "a" away from this name and this becomes "Non", as in General Zod's male accomplice Non in the original 'Superman' films of 1978 and 1980. The character Non, played by Irish-American actor and one-time professional boxer Jack O'Halloran, is the mute villain from Krypton, who looks a bit like The Hulk but who has the personality of Frank Spencer in the 1970s British television sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. It was O'Halloran's decision to make his character mute, because the part of General Zod went to Terence Stamp who is, of course, British, and the English actress Sarah Douglas was the one to get the part of Ursa, General Zod's female accomplice. I don't think this name is likely to revive as yet (as opposed to Octavia which means "eighth" in Latin while Nona means "ninth"), partly because old films including those two Superman ones are often repeated and partly because of the Italian word "nonna" which translates into English as "grandmother" (just like "nonno" translates as "grandfather")." Comment left Dec 21, 2006: "I have had this name for over 50 years. I have met a few other "Nona's" in my lifetime. It also means "grandmother" in Italian which is a coincidence since my grandmother named me. I think it is a very nice name - it's easily spelled and the only correction I occasionally have to make is to say with and "N" - Not "M"." (Report as inappropriate)
