It depends. All in all that name is unique and I'm proud to have it. My name is pronounced Leela." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Oct 19, 2009: "My name is Lelia (we pronounce it "Leh-lee-ah"). My father named me after his mother (he wanted to name me after Princess Leia but my mother wouldn't let him). I used to hate my name because no one could pronounce it. I had a teacher call me Leilani for two years and people still call me Leila. I kind of like my name now but there is no way I want to name my daughter after myself or my grandmother." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Oct 11, 2009: "Hello Lelias - all of you - you have a lovely name. For my family tree, I'm trying to find information about Lelia Smith born in Iowa in 1882(ish). Her parents were Robert H Smith ( born England 1843 ) and Lelia (maiden surname not known) born New York 1852ish. Lelia was living with her parents in Boulder County at the 1900 census. If she's your greatgrandmother, then we're realted and I'd love to hear from you.I live in New Zealand and am not sure if it's OK to post an email address here." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jul 27, 2009: "Hey, I'm also Lelia, I was named after the wife of my mother's favorite teacher. I rarely meet people who understand my name at first, and I usually have to say it twice or even three times and not even then do they understand it :)) I have been told however, and I believe it myself too, that it's a beautiful and special name. Now that I know what it means I think it suits me perfectly :)
I simply couldn't imagine myself having a common name, but I'm surprised to find out that there are so many Lelias out there." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jul 17, 2009: "My name is Lelia and I too was named for my grandmother. She was born in Texas in 1900 and named for an old British friend of the family. After a lifetime of trying to give an example for the correct pronunciation (used by my family), I came up with "rhymes with Celia, but with an L". People seem to get that. Old friends call me Lily or Lil from school. Just found a more fitting meaning for my name for me: Italian Baby Names
Lelia
English translation/equivalent: Lelia
Origin: Name of Latin origin meaning "joking, laughing, talkative." Very common in Rome and oftentimes the name of a character in plays.
Name Day/Onomastico: August 11ýin memory of St. Lelia, Irish martyr of the 5th century also known as Lidonia. She was an abbess in Limerick, Ireland. I have always received compliments on my name." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jun 23, 2009: "Im 41 as of today and I am also a Lelia (Lee-Lah). But of course no one pronounces it correctly or spells it correctly even if you tell them 15 times. One thing for sure everyone thinks its beautiful. I was named after my godmother who was an older woman.
I found this out: In Arabic it means - Black or night. In Greek it means - well spoken. In Swahili it means - good. In Sanskrit it means-Divine Play !" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jun 04, 2009: "My name is Lelia. I was named after my grandmother. Sometimes I like it and I do think it is a pretty name but I find it at times annoying that people cannot pronounce it and they have to ask again and again and in school all the teachers never could pronounce it correctly so you get Lila, Lillia, etc. I believe the correct pronunciation is Lee-Lee-uh. I'm so confused...I don't really know if that is the correct way to say it or not! LOL!! Even the members in my family all say it differently at times...oh well..." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Mar 30, 2009: "My name is Lelia, I love it, I was named by my grandmother who had a friend with that name as a child. It is usually mispronounced, but I don't care. It's one of a kind." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Mar 18, 2009: "My name is Lelia and I to was named after my grandmother, Lelia Smith from Sebec or Dovercroft Main USA. I also like the name and even though it is always pronounced wrong, I just tell everyone it is like Cleia, or also tow words "feel ya" but change the F to a L and it works. Love the name, but the world does seem to have a problem with it." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Mar 10, 2009: "I love the name Lelia!! I went not knowing my great grandmothers name till the day she died., she was always just Grandma C.. The first time was when I looked at the funeral program. I thought it was beautiful and vowed to name my first daughter Lelia. I was a little iffy once the time had come up during conversations of family planning because I really want my child to have an arabic name. But I wanted to stay true to my word. so I looked up the meaning of Lelia and what do you know!!! It's an arabic originated name. I am so excite, I get the best of both!
BTW My great gran pronounced it Lee-Lah, but I choose to go with Lee-Liah. I have never heard it pronounced that way... It's beautiful!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 27, 2009: "I was named "Lelia" after my great-grandmother. It's pronounced Lee-Luh (think: silent "i"). It is pronounced wrong all the time. I've been called such things as Lee-lee-uh, Lil-ee-uh, and Lay-luh. One of my high school teachers and one of my graduate professors continued to call me "Lila" the whole time I was in class with them. I've never met anyone else with the same name, though I have been told "I know a Lelia" before (when I ask if it is both spelled and pronounced the same, people are generally not sure). I have had compliments on my name, and I think it's very nice not to have a common name so as to decrease confusion in school and other similar situations." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jan 31, 2009: "My name is Lelia I've only met one other Lelia and it was my aunt and my grandmothers name. I always have to tell people its like Delia with an 'L'. That works well, otherwise people get it really wrong. I have always loved my name and people are always complimenting it." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jan 10, 2009: "My name is Lelia! I was taught to pronounce it "Lay-Lee-Ah". I live in New York City. I have met a few women named of Leila, but I've never met anyone with my name. Most of the people I know call me me Lili, because they have such a hard time pronouncing my name!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Dec 01, 2008: "I was named Lelia after my great grandmother and so few people could pronounce it that I started using my middle name as a child, I hated getting nicknames because people were to lazy to learn it, especially "Lee" or "Lily". I've always said it: Lill-ya, but sounding out Lee-lee-ya seems to force people to say it correctly over time. I love it now." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jul 22, 2008: "We named my daughter (who is now 5) Lelia Catherine after her father's grandmother, and my great-grandmother. After I heard the name for the first time I fell in love with it, we didn't even have one alternate name selected" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jun 29, 2008: "Meu nome é Lélia! Adoro esse nome, sagnifica: tagarela, elouquente, falante, flor, estrela! Minha mãe me deu esse nome porque ela tinha uma professora chamada Lélia! Beijo para todas as Lélia!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Feb 20, 2008: "My name is Lelia and it is often mispronounced but I always tell them it is okay but just don't forget to call me for lunch or dinner. My Aunt has the same name but goes by Pearl instead. I pronounce it as:
LeeLeeah. I have only known about a couple of ladies with the name of Lelia. It is my first name but did not go by Lelia until much later in life. I have a personalized plate with the name Lelia on it." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 02, 2008: "My name is Lelia. I used to spell it "Leila" when I was in school. But no matter the spelling, no one could ever pronounce it right. I used to tell them its like Sheila, only with a Lee. I've been called Lisa, Lily, Leann(?), Lulu, Lila, my grandmother even called me Lillya. I know two other ladies with the same name but I would never change it. I love my name!!! Like me, it's unusual." (Report as inappropriate)
