Comment left Aug 20, 2008: "I am also a Lakesha, only my name is spelled Lakeshia. I never really ran into trouble with the name as a child. As an adult, I have noticed that the name does carry a sterotype.
Armed with a great resume and applying for numerous postions (some of which I was over-qualified for),I found it hard to get so much as a call-back or email from potential employers. I've had more than a few employers tell me "your not what I expected" (based on past experience, my guess was they meant not ghetto enough). Antithetically amongst friends I am considered to be the "white girl" of the bunch. So based on a name I couldn't get a job and turns out I'm actually to be too white. You have to laugh, huh?" Comment left Oct 13, 2007: "I have this name. People have thought this name very beautiful and have complimented me on it most of which are caucasian and a small amount of which are asian. I also, often, get laughed at (graciously light-hearted of course) by a majority of the african american community because it is mostly african american woman who have this or some version of this name. I am not african american nor do I have, as far as I am aware, any african american dissent. I am mixed and identify mainly with the caucasian community. I sometimes get a double or triple take accompanied with a hesitant expression when I must present identification. I do not look like anything close to a LaKeshia. Only those Russian/Slavic community have ever made me feel remotely comfortable with it. It has left me feeling rather conflicted and so I stopped using it in favor of my middle or last name, abbreviating my first only as 'L'. The name just doesn't feel like home." People say it's ghetto, so sometimes I want to tell people a nickname to call me, but I AM PROUD of my name and refuse to potray it as a "GHETTO" name...I am far from ghetto so therefore I can bring something extra to the fellow LAKESHA name generation...sterotypes need to stop.." Most people on first glance say Lake Sha
Most often seen it spelled as Lakeisha.
