I also, often, get laughed at (graciously light-hearted of course) by a majority of the african american community because it is mostly african american woman who have this or some version of this name. I am not african american nor do I have, as far as I am aware, any african american dissent. I am mixed and identify mainly with the caucasian community. I sometimes get a double or triple take accompanied with a hesitant expression when I must present identification. I do not look like anything close to a LaKeshia. Only those Russian/Slavic community have ever made me feel remotely comfortable with it. It has left me feeling rather conflicted and so I stopped using it in favor of my middle or last name, abbreviating my first only as 'L'. The name just doesn't feel like home." People say it's ghetto, so sometimes I want to tell people a nickname to call me, but I AM PROUD of my name and refuse to potray it as a "GHETTO" name...I am far from ghetto so therefore I can bring something extra to the fellow LAKESHA name generation...sterotypes need to stop.." Most people on first glance say Lake Sha
Most often seen it spelled as Lakeisha.
