In the US, few of us are Jewish or Arabic, and yet it is our name and we are proud of it. I don't feel "type cast" because of it either, unlike the Oct 09, 2008 poster. LaKeisha is a beautiful name. Where I grew up it was a very popular name and would hear it called everywhere I go. Eveyone spells it wrong even family members because of the various ways of spelling it. The only problem I have with it is like some of the others have said I feel "type cast" with this name. People think of a loud gehetto black girl. I even had an ocurrence where I left a message for a person sight unseen and when he called my office back he requested to speak with a black girl named Keisha. The funny part was I was not the only person named Keisha in the office at that time. But... I do know of a white girl when I was younger who was named Keisha so I know of at least one who is not black.(LOL)" (Report as inappropriate)

Traditionally, parents named their children after biblical characters and a review of census records demonstrates how the name transformed over time from Kezia to Keesha to, ultimately, Keisha and many other diverse spellings. The French prefix żLaż was first added by free people of color in Louisiana and has become a popular trend among African Americans.
