Comment left May 15, 2009: "Hi Everyone, My name is Kecia as well. My Mum said she saw the name in a magazine. A model had the name and so named me after her. I am now 40yrs old. When I was growing up, no-one could pronounce it and also no-one had heard of it.
I did do some traveling around USA and they thought I would be black, but to their surprise I wasn't.
I am from NZ and are part Maori. There was a girl actor in Whale rider and her name is Keisha, but it is not a Maori name." (Report as inappropriate)

I later found out her name was Kecia Nyman and yes, she was in fact a sweedish model.
I did try and get information about her, but not sure if it was accurate. I was born in 1965 and it was then she really became famous.
I like the spelling. Very unique. Going thru school was hell. No one knew how to say it, spell it and most thought it was a nickname. I still have the same issues today. Now I am sterotyped as being black.
Growing up no one heard of my name and most wanted to know where it came from. I always said a sweedish model.

People often get this confused look on their faces when they see it and they look even more confused when I tell them how it is actually pronounced. I don't know how many times I've had to reference the name Alicia to get them to understand the pronunciation and spelling. I loved my name back then, and I love it even more now! People assume I'm black if they haven't met me, don't know how to pronounce it, I hated it when I was younger, I was told it was the name of a model, and I have no idea of its origin or meaning. As i got older a lot of people would comment on my name saying how do you pronouce it its pretty or different so now I like my name. However i thought i was the only Kecia out here. I was named after my moms best friend in high schools niece. I am now 32 years old. People often do say it is an african name. But i am half Filipino and Mexican so i dont see any african in me." I do love reading about the folks who got the same story from their parents as far as the sweedish model,that is what I was told also.
