My mom claimed she was playing with names and came up with the name, but I suspect that it cane from seeing or hearing about the European model since it was just after that time frame. On the "correct" pronunciation: there are just possibilities, it's subjective based on what your parents or whomever named you, wants to pronounce it. My mom pronounced it Key-sha. But most people want to say Kee-shia or Keece-e-ya. I am 36 and I've made some friends on FB based on our name. I thought it was very, very rare. By the way, Kecia Nyman is on FB, she was a friend and part of our group of friends called Kecia. I don't think she is now, and none of the us have met yet..." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Aug 29, 2010: "My name is Kecia, pronounced Key-sha. I was born in 1963 on the MS Gulf Coast. I always heard my mom got it the name from some Hawaiian Punch commerical. I've met about 3 others with the same spelling, they happened to be white, while I am African American. We were all around the same age. Job, from the Bible, had a daughter named Kezia. He supposedly had the most beautiful daughters. I also found a Kezia in our family tree. Umm...commercial or family name? I had one telemarketer tell me, "that's not how you spell Key-sha." I replied, "that's how my momma spell it." LOL Needless to say, she didn't get a sale!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jul 21, 2010: "I'm a Kecia too. (key-sha) I'm 44 and from Louisiana. My mom told me she saw this model on TV and liked the name. I never knew who she was talking about until now. I'm white. Growing up, I knew of no one named Kecia. There were a couple of girls a few years younger than me that had the name with the different spelling (keesha). They were African American. Growing up, no one would pronounce my name correctly. The two most common attempts were kee-see-a and ketch-a. In the last decade maybe, people pronounce it correctly on the first try. Comment left Mar 11, 2010: "I was also named after the model, Kecia Niemann, who is Finnish. I was told that she was a Covergirl model and after I was born, she appeared in Playboy magazine. I am a white female and 45 years old. It wasn't until I was an adult I heard the name again. A lady called me on the phone (for her company, and didn't know my first name when she called), and we were both surprised to know we had the same name. Although, she was surprised that I was not African American, like her, and her name was spelled differently. Many people have told me that they had a dog named Kecia (probably spelled Keesha, for the Keeshond. The magazine was a Playboy (July '67) and I was always embarrassed by that as a kid. I didn't find out she was a famous European model until years later, as a adult he showed me the magazine, which he had saved. I've only met one other girl with the same name and spelling and her parents heard the name while traveling in Europe. She is also my age. I'm half Japanese and half Mexican and most people are surprised to meet me and see that I am not black. I love the uniqueness of the spelling and get tons of compliments on my name.
