Comment left Aug 25, 2008: "Just a correction, from a South Pacific Islander... Adding an "a" to the end of Kai - does not femenize it... it changes the meaning all together. Kai is already a unisex term, depending on the suffix added to it, is what appropriates gender.
Traditionally, Kai more than likely would not stand alone whether it was by suffix or the following name, an ocean/sea cannot stand on its own. It can be strong ocean, or whispering sea, magical waters... you get the point.
Aside from giving colonized names/surnames, naming your children is a lot more intricate than how it "rolls off the tongue".
As for people hearing it in a Bob Marley tune and naming a child after it... Bob was not referring to anything pure. That is, unless it was pure marijuana.
I'm not attacking anyone, just wanted to encourage a bit of free thinking on the part of soon-to-be parents. I'm not addressing the Swed/Norway meanings at all - b/c I clearly am not. I can only comment on the way people freely/randomly pick names based on how it sounds - as opposed to what it means and how it resonates for that child. They will carry the resonance/vibration forever... that is, if they don't decide to change their names altogether.
Think about it... would you like some kid named Moses to feel he has the right to part your daughter's red sea??? Or some other horney teenager wanting to see how "pure" your daughters' goods are???
