Comment left Jun 27, 2008: "My grandaughter is named Delia after her
g-g-g grandmother. Granny always was called
DE Lee and that is what we call our Delia unless she does something wrong then it is prononced correctly. My Granny was a Cherokee Indian born in 1888 so we know this name is very old. Untill my daughter named our little Delia we had never heard of anyone else with that name." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jan 30, 2008: "This is my daughter's name also (born 1996). We also pronounce it like "Celia" and "Amelia" not with the short "e" sound. I don't see how pronouncing it this way is wrong or in anyway confusing our kids. I have met women in their 80's with the same name and pronounce it the same way. I have had the same issues with her being called Delilah, however I have only had 2 people pronounce it with the short "e". One of those was from Cuba and the other from Canada. I don't know if there is a connection...but the majority rules in our life with it rhyming with Celia and Amelia!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jan 06, 2008: "I named my daughter Delia Joy in 1992. I was about 8 months pregnant with her when I learned of the name, and it seemed like Delia was telling me that was her name. Most people confuse it with Delilah and pronounce it similar to that, but once they know it, they don't forget it. We pronounce it as if it rhymes with Celia. A lot of the time it comes out "Deelya". We're in the south. She's a stunning 15 year old girl now. She's the only Delia we know personally, and everyone loves her name." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Nov 24, 2007: "People often pronounce the name "Delia" with a short "e" as if the "Del" was the same as in "Delta." I pronounce it with a long "e" (Deelia) so that it rhymes with "Celia." I have even had people pronounce it like "Dahlia" (the flower); I have no idea where they got that from. Or sometimes they confuse it with "Delilah." I like the name, it comes from the ancient Greek, from the island "Delos" meaning "clear or bright."" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Aug 23, 2007: "I grew up with people mispronouncing my name all the time! I never found any "trinkets" with my name on them. I always had to spell my name for people. I thought I would change it to Del or Delya! My parents pronounced it correctly in Spanish but everyone else butchered it. Now as an adult I have survived all the childhood anquish of my name and delight when I do hear the correct pronounciation. My friend named her daughter after me and I was so honored. Now people compliment my name and I have grown into my name. I tell my 3 kids that one of them has to name one of the future grandkids after me!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left May 07, 2006: "Hi, my name is Delia and I too have experienced many wrong pronunciations of my name. First of all, I like "Del-ya" with a short "e" sound. I've had people call me "Dil-ya," "Dee-lia," "De-li-lah" and "Del-a". Then there are those who don't have a clue and pronouce it "Del-I-a" (stress on long I) or "Del-E-a" (stress on long E). What I find aggravating is that even when I tell everyone to call me "Del-ya" (short e), some people insist on "Dil-ya." I think it depends where you grew up. As this is my name I think I have the right to decide which way to pronounce my own name! Right?" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 16, 2006: "I've only met one other person named Delia. When I was a child, I hated the name - it was unusual and I wanted a common name. Now I LOVE my name. I pronounce it Dee-lee-ya (3 sylables). Most people pronounce it incorrectly - funny because people seem to know how to pronounce Celia." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Dec 12, 2005: "I appreciated my name because it is different and you don't meet too many Delia's. Although there are several pronunciations, even within my immediate family there are three." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Dec 05, 2005: "Yes I too had a hard time of it as a child. I wished my parents had called me something everybody could pronounce without being told. There were also some hilarious spelling attempts made by others. Now that I am older I am very happy to have a name which is more unique. Good on you mum and dad :o)" (Report as inappropriate)
