"Care-uh", given the etymology of the name. It is a Latin/Italian word (and Gaelic as others have said), it means " dear one, darling" and is pronounced "Car-uh."
I suppose there is a precedent in the now old-fashioned pronunciation of Sharon and Karen as " Share-un" and " Care-un" (or perhaps this was only i England, where I'm from?) but still, I think Cara should be " Car-uh" and I am suprised some people choose to pronounce it the other way. Mine was shortened from my italian grandmother, Carmella. It's pronounced Care-uh. I meet other people with the same name, but they spell it with a "K" many of the times. I only know one other person who spells it with a "C". My family has a tradition of naming babies names that start with the letter "C", so I am always searching for unique names that no one else has. Mine was this way until I went to college. At school, substitutes NEVER get her name right! when they're reading the attendance. They either say "Ciara" or "Carey". She's gotten used to it over the years, though. I just correct them and go on. I've seen it spelled with a K as well. It's a unique name and I never have the problem of other people in my class with the same name as me.
