User Comments about the name Beulah
Comment left Nov 16, 2009: "The Beulah Show started off as a 1940s radio show, in which the African-American housemaid of that name was voiced by a WHITE MALE. In the 1950s TV show of that name, firstly Ethel Waters, then Louise Beavers, and finally Hattie McDaniel took the role of the title character. Since then, a name like Beulah, popular in the 1900s, has been virtually unusable. Not even the white American actress Beulah Bondi had ever helped!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Dec 14, 2008: "It was my grandmother's name and it is beautiful and unique, just like her!" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jul 15, 2008: "Beulah is a royal, classy name. It means the Lord delights in you, protected.
The negative connotation in the american culture doesnt take away its meaning.
I love that name, its not a cheap name" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Apr 14, 2008: "I don't think all old-fashioned names are coming back, and certainly not this one - partly because of the black maid connotations it had acquired around the middle of the 20th century. One can get away with choosing, say, Pearl or Matilda or Hazel for their baby girls, but it really would take smoking marijuana to go as far as Beulah or Ethel or Hortense - all old lady names with negative connotations that should perhaps stay in the past for ever. Just think, though, that if one did go as far as, well, just Pearl or Matilda or Hazel, a grandchild called Gwen or Kathleen or Peggy or Darlene and then a great-grandchild called Lisa or Kelly or Angela or Jennifer or Kimberly may follow." Comment left Apr 04, 2008: "This is my name currently, and while I used to hate it when I was younger and wanted to change it, I have come to *love* it for it's meaning. Besides, more and more people now comment on how pretty the name is. Maybe old-fashioned names are coming back. Who knows?" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 05, 2008: "Unfortunately, this is forever associated with black housemaids in various films (as in the 1933 film I'm No Angel in which Mae West said to her maidservant "Beulah, peel me a grape") and radio/television programmes - the 1950s television show, simply entitled Beulah, was based on a 1940s radio show entitled The Beulah Show where, bizarrely, the maid was voiced by a white actor (and I mean actor, not actress) on that radio show. The white American actress Beulah Bondi came on the scene to play character roles in films such as Mr Smith Goes To Washington (1939) and It's A Wonderful Life (1946), so she can hardly have helped the name." Comment left Oct 11, 2007: "The name of a black maid on television in 1950s America - and also of the white American actress Beulah Bondi." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left May 07, 2007: "It was my grandmothers name. She was born in the 1890's, so it was more acceptable at that time. I wouldn't subject any of my daughters to the name today. Still she was a wonderful woman with many qualities that I hope to pass along to my daughters." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Apr 24, 2007: "Beulah was my mother's first name. Since she died when I was 10, I have only vague memories of her. I love the name for the fact that it was my mother's name. I realize that the modern crowd would not like it, but anyone can mispronounce a name and make something ugly of it. Think of the person who named you and how they felt about you...that will make the name more palatible." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Apr 11, 2007: "I love this name (it was my great-grandmother's). I wish we still used more of these old fashioned names." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jan 28, 2007: "My name is Beulah, and I hate it! People often make fun of the way it sounds. I legally changed it, too, to Maddie. I love that name." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jan 20, 2007: "Whenever I hear this name it reminds me of Beulah Bondi, that actress from the films 'Mr Smith Goes To Washington' and 'It's A Wonderful Life', in which she played Jimmy Stewart's mother, or that 1950s African-American television show 'Beulah', hence the slang word for any black woman in the United States working for a white family, just like the character did." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Aug 22, 2005: "This was my name, but I had it legally changed. People always made fun of it, except for a few stupid ones who'd say, oh, I like it, while they laughed.
I guess the correct way to pronouce it is "BEW-lah." If there's a prettier way, I wish somebody had told me. It's ugly, ugly, ugly." (Report as inappropriate)
