Comment left Oct 17, 2008: "The correct way to prounounce Aliya in Arabic which is where the name stemmed from is Ahh-lee-ya with the emphasis on Ahh . Many Americans pronounce my name A-lee-ya though which is fine too. The meaning in Arabic means "exhalted or highest " one." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left May 09, 2008: "I love this name. It isn'y my name and I have never met anyone named it but I love it. When I have a daughter I plan on naming her Aliya. I am Irish so it doesn't have any religious or culture meanig to me, I just think it's beautiful. And I pronounce it a - lee - a like aleah" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Dec 23, 2005: "My name is Aliya. Growing up, I never knew any one else with my name. Then, in the early 1990s, a singer by the name of Aaliyah became famous. She passed away in August 2001 in a plane crash. It's interesting that according to this website, her name soared in popularity the year BEFORE she died. Perhaps it is a testament to the level of fame she attained prior to her death.
My name is often misspelled, there are many spellings for the name. The most common mispronounciation is a-lie-a. It is pronounced a-lee-ya or ah-lee-ya.
Interstingly enough, my parents are Muslim and named me Aliya because it is an Arabic word. I learned in college that Aliya is also a Hebrew word. There is actually a procedure in Judaism in which you "take your Aliya." Imagine my surprise when I arrived on campus on my first day of college and found signs plastered everywhere that said, "Take Your Aliya NOW!"" (Report as inappropriate)
