In historical records the name appears as Verling and at some point the "-g" was dropped. In terms of the pronunciation, I like it as verl-in, as in pearl-in. To me, ver-lin sounds too harsh. Comment left Mar 21, 2006: "My dad's name is Verlin. He has always pronounced it "Ver-lin." He was born in 1921, during the "peak period" for this name. His older brothers were named "Harold" and "Homer," so, I guess they all were given unusual names. I've never met another person with this name. Even though it is unusual, which makes it sort of special, no one has ever made fun of him because of his name, at least to my knowledge. The name does seem to give others trouble when it comes to pronouncing or spelling it (although it seems pretty straight forward to me)." (Report as inappropriate)
