Except for two cousins with that name, I never met another Verlin, nor heard of one until this year. I did read columns in the NY Times by nature writer, Verlyn Klinkenborg. I never liked the name because we moved to Texas where they pronounced it in an ugly way. In Louisiana, the French inflection sounded nice, but Texans turned me off to my name, and I changed it several times, the last time legally. I retain it as my middle name to honor my mother's brother and my mother's intent, but I have never grown to really like the name. My mother's father was named Verlin Robert Medfor... so I was named Verlin Robert Steele. My mom is from New York and when I asked where she came up with it, she replied that is was a famous football player with that name at the time and it stuck... I've yet to find this guy. I was once told that Verlin is an combination of two Irish words: "Ver" meaning green and "lin" or "lyn" or "lynne" meaning meadow - or green meadow. Can anybody verify this?

In historical records the name appears as Verling and at some point the "-g" was dropped. In terms of the pronunciation, I like it as verl-in, as in pearl-in. To me, ver-lin sounds too harsh.
