User Comments about the name Son
Comment left Jul 30, 2009: "As the French word for 'his' or 'her', this only precedes men or masculine nouns, as in 'son mari' (meaning 'her husband') or 'son jardin' (meaning 'his garden' or 'her garden'). For women or feminine nouns, the word 'sa', as in 'sa femme' (meaning 'his wife') or 'sa voiture' (meaning 'his car' or 'her car'), is used instead. The plural version, which is gender-neutral, is 'ses' (pronounced like the English word 'say'), as in 'ses amis' (meaning 'his friends' or 'her friends')." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jul 26, 2009: "The vocabulary word for a boy or man in relation to his parent(s) or that same boy/man hailing from the place of his birth (the female equivalent is 'daughter'). It is also an affectionate form of address used by any middle-aged or old person to address a boy or man young enough to be his or her son or grandson. It is also one of those faux amis (i.e. 'false friends') in the French language - it is the French word for 'his' or 'her' and the French translation of the English word 'son' is 'fils', so 'son fils' would mean 'his son' or 'her son' (the French word 'son' standing, in a case like this, for 'his' or 'her' while 'fils' is the one that translates as the English word 'son'). The French word for 'sound' is also 'son', as in 'son et lumiere' (meaning 'night-time entertainment at ancient building with recorded sound and lighting effects to give dramatic narrative of its history')."
