With Disney's latest teen movie "Camp Rock" starring Joe Jonas of the everpopular Jonas Brothers as Shane, there will certainly be an abundance of baby boys hereon to be named Shane. Shane represents a positive role model in the movie, the positive theme of which is "believing in yourself." Shane is a very cool (Disney picked it for their lead character, a teed idol.) and masculine name for today (that's not overused like Joshua, Brandon, Nathan) that is also very deep in meaning: "God is Gracious." Shane is a form of John. A looser definition would be "Gift from God" and as we all know, "Every good and perfect gift is from above." - James 1:17. Shane has very positive connotations not only from its meaning, but also from the 1953 classic western movie "Shane," the main character Shane who represents honor in the movie. We had problems conceiving and I naturally became pregnant. It was a true miracle. When I read that the Hebrew meaning of the name Shane is "a gift from god" that was enough to convince me. The only real problem with his name is that his last name is Johnson and Shane is a form of Shawn which is a form of John so he always teases his dad that he named him "John Johnson". It certainly holds up over bad 70's male names like Shannon (one of my friends). I got the usual childhood taunts as well "Shane, Come back Shane.", "Shane The Pain", "Shane The Brain" even "Shaney Wayney". I've been called Shawn so many times, I've got where I just ignore it. I still can't see how people can read it wrong, I mean come on, S-H-A-N-E, it's so easy. I've met several other Shane's that are my age, but not many that are younger than me. Comment left Jun 15, 2008: "i'm a female Shane as well, born in Canada in1972 and named after Shane Gould, the 1972 Australian Olympic Swimming Champion. i love my name- it's strong. people tend to say they love the name shane for a girl, though i have never met another woman with my name. there's a character in the movie "some kind of wonderful" called Shayne and also lorenzo lamas' daughter- but they both spell it with a "y". i like to say, 'no "y", just plain shane like the cowboy!'" Often I get Shawn, but it's something I'm used to. Most other Shanes in my area that I've briefly met were jerks, but I wouldn't say that for everybody. Worst I got was 'Shane the brain' or 'Shane's insane' back in elementary school, but I was uber nerdy and I'm probably a bit insane. As I've grown older, I've come to appreciate not being one of the "Tom, Dick, or Harry's" of the world. Unfortunately I still get confused with "Shawn," and "Shannon."
