User Comments about the name Raoul
Comment left May 30, 2009: "My name is Raoul. My father's name was Raoul. His grandparents were all born in France. YES! The name is very French. There is a version of this name in each of the European languages. In English, it is Ralph. In German it is Rolf. The original meaning was simple, "Wolf". The spelling became a bit confused on the islands of the Caribbean. Raoul is the French spelling. Raul is the Spanish spelling. But, sometimes the spellings are mixed." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Aug 09, 2008: "I'm from Europe, the Netherlands. Raoul is not a common name there either. My father was given that name (although he was spoken to as "Roel"), therefore my son's second name is Raoul as well.
I think it's French by origin. Jewish people also carrie the name I found out. Also populair in Hungary? Very rare here as well. Don't know why my very Dutch grandmother gave this excotic name to my father . Wartime. Grandfather deported to work in Germay. Maybe she met someone? Family-speculations...Can't ask anymore." I love the name, love the boy but not so much the literal meaning so I've taken some poetic license... I tell him it means 'wise' and 'strong' :)" (Report as inappropriate)
