User Comments about the name Ralph
Comment left Sep 09, 2008: "This is my name. I am the 4th Ralph. My great Grandfather, Grandfather, Father and Myself are all named Ralph. I haven't really known any of them though, so I'm not sure if I'm all that attached to passing on the legacy, when I could start a fresh one. I like the name now, but when I was in school, I paid a price for having a unique name.
I started a job and some lady asked me what my name was. I told her, and she says "oh, I thought they were messing with me... your name really is Ralph" as if it was something interesting." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jul 02, 2008: "I'm a Ralph in the UK and have always liked the name. I was never aware of the slang meaning. The worst I had in terms of mocking was growing up in Cyprus, when one or two kids would say it as though it were a dog's bark. But they had trouble pronouncing and spelling it anyway, as it's such a non-Greek sounding name." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left May 09, 2008: "Though popular a century ago, I think the TV show 'The Honeymooners' with Jackie Gleason and Audrey Meadows as Ralph and Alice Kramden and Art Carney and Joyce Randolph as Ed and Trixie Norton may have had something to do with the name Ralph's decrease in popularity in recent times. It didn't, however, stop the parents of British actor Ralph Fiennes naming their own son Ralph in 1962. Though Fiennes pronounces his name in the old-fashioned British way as 'Rafe' (as also shown in the UK composer Ralph Vaughan Williams), I think that most people of today pronounce it as written." Comment left Apr 25, 2008: "Being named Ralph has its advantages. I am usually the only Ralph in an organization so there is no confusion when I answer the phone by saying only "Hello, this is Ralph". People in the neighborhood have a dog named Ralph. I take no offense as he is a cool dog." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Sep 25, 2007: "This is my husband's name and my brother-in-law's name. My husband is named for his grandfather and my brother-in-law has a nephew named for him. I think it is a strong masculine name that everyone knows and knows how to spell. There are actors, politicians, poets, presidents, cartoons, movie characters, tv characters, comedians, musicians named Ralph. About 15 years ago it was slang for vomit, but I think this has faded.
It's simple and easy to say. And because of it's decline in popularity, it is somewhat unique in young people." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Nov 22, 2006: "My name is Ralph and I quite like it. However I am a pretty substantial guy and people who abuse it generally don't do it again. I would hate to have the name if I could not look after myself though. Especially during the school years." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Oct 03, 2006: "Ralph, Ralph is my name too. I'm happy with it. The thing is that I live in Brazil, here people pronounce it in an acceptable way, but they spell it very very bad. Anyway, I like my name... :-)" (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jun 23, 2006: "I like it pronounced 'Rafe' like Ralph Vaughan Williams." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jan 23, 2006: "some people spell my name this way: ralf, or go to the extreme and say walphie. i have learned to put up with it & laugh with them. its better than getting angry & saying something you may regret." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Nov 13, 2005: "TV ads and sitcoms always seem to think it is a funny name for pathetic losers or dogs and puppets. Not very original but very, very irratating. Some jerks like to call me Ralphie or do the barf sound when saying it." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Aug 12, 2005: "I'm a Ralph too - it's good, as it is unusal in the UK, so you're never a 'Big' Mike or a 'Fat' Dave etc. Just 'Ralph'. Shame about the vomit slang, but hey, you can't have enerything." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Jul 25, 2005: "Ralph is my name. In my experience most people have had no trouble spelling it correctly. Nor have I met many, if any, people who could not pronounce it easily.
In general, though, I've found my name to be a popular object of riducule, in light of the numerous references to ridiculous television characters (sharing my name) of days past.
But I like my name. =)" (Report as inappropriate)
