I have also been told it was a river in Africa. I did not know it was a Native American name. My mother is a mixture of African-American and Native American heritage. So it makes sense-finally! My mom heard one of her co-workers talking about her niece named Nakia, and she liked it so much she ended up using it for me. When I was in elementary school I didn't like it because I could never get any of the stuff with my name on it (like pencils, and key chains) lol. Also, growing up in south it got misspelled and mispronounced a lot. But now I love it. It's unique enough that I'm usually the only one in group with it, but it doesn't sound made up either. My nickname has always been Kiki, but some of my friends call me Keeks now. I really hate being called Nicky lol. I learned about the movie "Nakia" in the past year and I'd love to see it sometime. It became rather popular in the early 1970's when Actor, Robert Forster, portrayed A Navajo Lawman, first in a movie, which co-starred Linda Evans, then in a T.V. series, which co-starred Arthur Kennedy. The show only lasted one season, but the name stuck. Robert Forster has appeared in many movies, and even been nominated for an oscar, but most people remember him as 'Nakia Parker'." People sometimes say it wrong too, like "Nah-keh-eye-a" I've met about two people with my name in elementary school. I, for the most part like my name, since not many people have it and it has such a nice meaning: Egyptian - Pure, Faithful, and in Russian - Unconquerable/Unconquered. Also, I do get lots of complements, and people tell me my name is pretty.
