His dad is a Michael, and so is his Uncle (his dad's sister's husband), and their son is also Michael. And now the youngest Michael is about to father another Michael due in August. It definitely stuck however... I'm 31 now and just about everyone knows me as Myk, which I quite like. It's a lot of fun to sign my name as "Myk". Comment left Dec 31, 2008: "Hmm, my Dad's name is Michael, and we call him Mike. I named my son after him but as a middle name, because it's very common. In High School I knew like 20 Mikes or Michaels.
At work I know 7 Michaels. There a lot of famous Michaels and Mikes: Jordan, Tyson, Phelps, Singletary, Ditka, Jackson, etc. You get the point. It's almost as common as John.

What happened? What happened in the 20s and 30s for name Michael to rapidly rise from 52nd place to 35th; then to 9th and 2nd in the 40s and 50s; and finally to achieve and hold 1st place from the 60s and 70s until about the end of the millennium (1998); only to lose 1st place to our rival Jacob in 1999. Curiously, Jacob jumped from 346th place to 79th from the 60s and 70s, in same decades that Michael had claimed 1st. Jacob's rapid rise in the 90s eventually supplanted Michael from the throne.
