My intention was to give all my children somewhat distinct names, but I bungled this on his. So he has many, many friends named Matt. I opted to call him Matthew from the beginning as I did not like the name Matt so well--sounded too much like the mat people walk on to get into the door. I have no regrets for the name that we gave him though. It seems a softer name and for someone who is maybe quieter or more a thinker, and that suits him." (Report as inappropriate)

When he was little, he couldn't say Matthew (most little kids can't pronounce the 'th' which isn't a big deal b/c eventually they can) but he called himself Mamew and we thought that was so dang cute. Comment left May 06, 2009: "Different from what most people think, Matthew is not Greek. Matteos is English but the root name is Mattityahu, which means YAHWEH'S GIFT. But more accurately, is YHWH's GIFT.
The Greek translators mis translated or rather transliterated the verse "I AM". When the Father actually said YHWH which stands for Yod, Hey, Waw, Hey. So when Yeshua (Jesus) said I AM, He actually said YHWH, for which the Jews wanted to kill him because itýs a super duper holy name.
And even the word ýJewý is a missed used word because there are actually 12 tribes of Israel, and the Jews are actually from the tribe of Judah and became known as Yahuden or Jews, you see there is no J in Hebrew, there is however a J in Greek and Latin.
Ancestors missed up a lot of things for usý No worry, YHW is good and will restore all things shortly, very shortly.

Comment left Nov 10, 2008: "My and husband and i just had a son October 1, 2008 and he was 7 weeks premature and has spent a month and a half in the neonatal unit in roanoke memorial in roanoke virginia. My husband and I tried for 2 years to have a child even out of concern saw a ob doc in December of 2007 and in March of 2007 found out i was pregnant no drugs nothing to induce pregnancy just prayers and hope and god rewarded us with our son Matthew david Cornwell. We were told it was a girl for 7 months and my husband said "no its a boy, god said his name will be Matthew" and when he got here he was indeed a boy. so never under estimate god. I've found my name to be versatile - it easily can be adapted to Matt for friends, and is a classic, strong name in formal settings. It is easily pronounced and spelt.
