  • Comment left May 07, 2010: "My name is Mathew. The Catholic nun who helped my mom when she gave birth to me gave that name. Somehow the birth registrar wrote it with one 'T' on the cert. I am not a Catholic now, so I what the guy said about it being protestant is encouraging to me (not that I am ant-Catholics.Sometimes people call me 'Matt' or mispell it with two 'Ts', but it's fine by me. I had a stuggle about the one and two 'Ts' for quite a while that I thought of changing it in my birth cert, passport, etc. But that would be messy. I later discovered that one T is an English variant derived from the French Matheu and others. For me, one or two Ts, the meaning is still the same, "Gift of God". That's most important. You were born as your were named and God never made a mistake. So all you Mathews with one T, be proud of your name! dont forget to remind the travel agent it shouldnt be mispelled or you'll miss your flight, lol." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left May 07, 2010: "always apelt wrong but i have a strange last name so that gets spelled wrong too" (Report as inappropriate)

  • Comment left Apr 19, 2010: "This is the definite answer people. A comment left alludes to religion, which is somewhat correct. Names are co-opted over time to mean different things, or to claim a difference by way of spelling. The origin of the two spellings is this: Matthew is for those who are Catholic. Mathew is for those who are Protestant. It was a way to identify your faith. As Matthew means gift from god, there were those who were determined to use their name to identify their faith, hence the difference in the T's. Here endeth the lesson! The spelling now is inconsequential as many have forgotten, or have been ignorant of the origin, however if you were to travel to a predominately protestant city and whip out a credit card with 'Matthew' you'll get some strange looks, given the protestant passion of their faith. Comment left Feb 19, 2010: "My name is Mathew Dillon, as is my father's. I enjoy having only one t in my name, even when its shortened to Mat. If too many people give you a problem about it, just tell them that Mathews County, Virginia spells it the same way, and ask them to prove Rand McNally wrong!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Feb 14, 2010: "I love the name Matthew. I like that it means gift from god. But people sometimes wrong like mathew or maffew. I like to call myself maff too.:). - Matthew Kirkland" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Feb 10, 2010: "My brother is named Mathew WITH ONLY ONE "T" and he loves it! He feels unique. Matthew with two T"s always gets connected to the biblical name and the One 'T" spelling is more universal for all, considering not everyone is christian!! I LOVE IT!" (Report as inappropriate)

  • Comment left Feb 06, 2010: "I'm expecting to have my first son very soon. And we have chosen the name Mathew. For no reason but just because we love the name.. I'm still torn between one t or two... Mathew with one t just looks right to me! It looks.... Clean." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Jan 24, 2010: "Mat's my name and I'm cool with it. my parents are indian and it's just the way you spell it back in india. i was born in the us though, and even though it gets spelled wrong a lot, it's cool" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Feb 10, 2009: "I love my name. Of course it's misspelled quite a bit. People always ask why it's spelled with one T and I always blame it on my mom, It always opens up opportunities to chat with people. I always say I'm a one T Mat and people look at me weird, ask me how that's pronounced and we have a good laugh about it. I like to be called Mathew, but I'll settle for Mat. Just don't put door in front of it." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Feb 06, 2009: "Its my fiance's name & I love it! For our future kids (boy, of course) might look into selecting something close to Mathew or perhaps middle name Mathew.." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Aug 18, 2008: "I enjoy the different spelling to my name. My friends call me Mat, but I do prefer Mathew. The DMV/RMV misspelled my name on my license, it took 3 days of waiting in the DMV to actually get my license, and now my legal alias is Matthew. :-(" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Aug 09, 2008: "US military uses last names ...and my last name is Mathew. I am an asian immigrant and was often told to learn to spell my name right. Love this name." (Report as inappropriate)

  • Comment left Jul 05, 2008: "My Father's name is Mathew and my middle name is Mathew. For years, people have told me it is spelled incorrectly. For crying out loud, if my parents would have named me REVTEROPTOMOUS, or anything else, would they tell me it is spelled incorrectly?!? I like it, my father's name is spelled this way since his birth in Europe. My family's tradition is to name your first born son after your grandfather, so I told my son about the One "t", two "t" issue, and told him he can name his son anything he likes, but to be aware that the "Future Mathew" will have to deal with ignorant people telling him that his name is spelled incorrectly his entire life. This is not so bad since there are much more devestating things to deal with in life... LOL Have a great day and name one of your children "Mathew" to have them spice up there life! Steven Mathew T. PS, Do you know how many people tell me that I spell "STEVEN" incorrectly without "PH"?!?" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left May 22, 2008: "Well my full name is Mathew, but of course I go by Mat. People always assume it's always with two 'ts' which kinda annoys me. What annoys me more though is in my e-mails my signature will say Mat and people still refer to me as Matt lol" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left May 15, 2008: "Mathew with one T was entered onto my birth certificate by the registrar - it has been one t ever since. Although it causes a bit of confusion." (Report as inappropriate)

  • Comment left Apr 10, 2008: "My sons name is Mathew and I'm glad I decided to spell it with one t." (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Apr 02, 2008: "it's my son's name and i love it! i hate it when people spell it with two t's" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Mar 26, 2008: "Matthew is an awesome name because I have a friend with that name and it's not a name you can really make fun of and he's a cool guy!" (Report as inappropriate)
