But, I am such an individual that I just ignored the comments. I discovered one other person that named her son Kalen, back then. This made me feel so much more comfortable. I came up with the name because I originally wanted to name him Jalen, but, it was so over-used. My son is really uncomfortable with his name. He has been called Kaitlyn and mistaken for a female in public settings. Example: Doctor visits, they say, "You can bring HER back now or SHE can come on back now." Comment left Sep 04, 2009: "Kalen (kay lin) is my 28 yr. old son's name. I first saw the name watching the movie "The Long Riders" when I was pregnant with him. It is James Keach's son's name, and James and Stacy Keach played Frank and Jesse James in the movie. James's son Kalen played Jesse, Jr. in it and I saw his name in the credits and thought it perfect with our last name Kerlin. As far as I know there has never been any trouble with people mispronouncing it. Those that pronounce it as rhyming with Allen would have that problem though.
I'm a firm believer in what we name our children does contribute to their personality. Kalen is compassionate, easy going, athletic, extremely good-looking, always loved dragons and mythology, knights, fairy tales and fantasies. He now has a beautiful son that he named Tristan (after one of the Knights of the Round Table). The mighty warrior meaning fits him, but not in an in-your-face full force way. I always loved the uniqueness of my name and resisted family members' desires to call me by nicknames. However, when the "Days of Our Lives" character, Kayla, became popular in the mid eighties, I began to hate my name because people began mispronouncing it. ("Hooked on Phonics" worked for me!) Now the name is as pedestrian as Ashley or Taylor. YUK! I would never name a daughter (or worse, a son) Kalen. One plus is that people assume I'm younger than I am (35) but a negative is that it's a ditzy-sounding name now. Sigh. At least I know that no one in the world has my full name: Kalen Melisse."
