Comment left May 17, 2007: "Quite common in the Netherlands where I live. It's my name. I have at the very least four acquaintances named Hans. In Dutch pronounced with the 'a' of 'a'ppropriate. Less Hans'es are born now than used to be in the sixties.
Dutch name dictionaries list it as a derivate of "Johannes", which translates to "John"." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Mar 09, 2007: "Hans is German/Scandinavian and it's derived from 'Johann' the German/Scandinavian version of John. It's a VERY common name. Especially, but not exclusively, in rural areas there are many called Johann, and they are all nicknamed Hans. Johann is pronounced 'Yo-hun' and Hans 'Huns' - think of it as a plural of 'hun' and you know how to say it." (Report as inappropriate)
Comment left Feb 15, 2007: "There is a boy at my skool named Hans Foster. But he goes by Foster. Hans is a handsome name tho. But Fo is cool too." (Report as inappropriate)
