Comment left Nov 01, 2009: "My son is 3, and my family and friends hated my choice, and although my Wife was reluctant, she agreed to the name. It's very uncommon in the states, and I always liked it as he Gideon saved the Israelite people from the Midianites in the Bible. I think it's a proud name, and strong, and in this day and age, it's VERY popular for female babies to get men names, so I wanted something that was unique, but strong enough that he would never meet a female with his name.
My family and friends all love the name now, it's funny how that goes. Everyone seems to love and feel good with common names.
I have a few other names I've chosen for future offspring, but I'll cross that road in the future.

Comment left Aug 07, 2008: "Its a pretty normal name to run into in South Africa. Tends to travel down family trees. My whole moms side of family are a bunch of Gideons dating back to the 1700s. Gideon is often said to me "the destroyer" but it all relates back to the days of the bible. I rather like to think of it as one who was called to special service by God. Most people call me Deon however, as my grandfather was.
I used to dislike the name as it seemed "formal" and longer or more traditional than most of my friends being marks or gary or joe. But I have grown into it and it takes some wide shoulders and firm feet to carry a name like Gideon. I suppose we grow into the role out of a called necesity. Now Im quite cool with it. My middle name, Stephanus, now thats another kettle of fish alltogether. Dont know how I will get to wear that one with pride. LOL. To all you Gideon's out there.... Go large!!! or Go home!!!"
