Comment left Feb 25, 2009: "There are several schools of thought for the derivation of the name Cullen. I believe the name the April 2006 noter was looking for when he said "Kill Cullen" was most likely CuChulainn, meaning literally "Hound of Cullan". There is an old Irish story involving a boy wanting to be a warrior for King Cullan, who slew Cullan's hound and by way of apology stayed on to guard the palace, changing his name to Hound of Cullan. Irish Gaelic being what it is, there are many spellings of all the names involved, and an Anglicised version would be Cullen. It is generally listed as "Irish surname transferred to forename use, an Anglicized form of Gaelic ż Coileżin, "descendant of Coileżn," hence "whelp, young pup."". Since the 'O' generally means 'son/descendant of', this would seem to bear out 'Cullen' being a derivation of Coileżn, the son of CuChulainn (Or Cu Coileżn).
My son is named Cullen, and the name 'young pup' seems oddly appropriate for him, though I'm sure my appreciation is tempered by the idea that he is descended from warriors. Another meaning listed in baby name books is "good lad" or "Handsome lad", which both describe him very well also. :-)" (Report as inappropriate)

I live in Barbados, West Indies but was born in Guyana, South America to a Chinese & Portuguese mother and Black & Chinese father. I am told that my eldest sister, Joy chose my name after reading a novel (probably with Irish characters), came across the name and liked it. People here call me all kinds of things: Cul`leen, Coo`lin, Colin..I've just given up! It's so easy: just break the name into two syllables - Cul`len. Anyway, I love my name as it stands out from the 'average' Joe's and works because I'm an artist and enjoy being different. The hard part is explaining my last name..which we won't get into. Thanks sis for a GREAT name!" (Report as inappropriate)

Most notably, the warrior known as Kill Cullen. Famous slaying people w/ a spear I heard. Most recently the angel of death, serial killer, Nurse Cullen. Hailed as the most prolific serial killer in all of New Jersey! Enjoy your name! With a name like Cullen, you'll go far!" (Report as inappropriate)

Comment left Aug 10, 2005: "We named our son Cullen (born 1996) because it was my maiden name, and we love it because of the family connection and because it's unusual. His name is, however, constantly mispronounced and misspelled. Usually people think his name is Colin. He'd like to be "John" at the moment, but I think later on he'll appreciate it."
